I try my best to get out three times a week before work to go for a training ride and I have noticed a few things while out on the road. There seems to be a certain type of cyclist that thinks it is above them to greet other cyclists on the road. This is not reserved for roadies or mtbers but rather for those that think that they are they superior in some way. It takes a breath to say good morning and not much effort to lift your hand off the bars to wave (Except if you are bleeding through your ears going up a 15% gradient :) )

Can't we be more friendly out there? I am not saying endanger yourself by waving maddly and shouting wildly! Think of the new guy who buys a bike and is amped to go for it. He sees a few guys or single rider and greets them. They ignore him. What kind of an impression is that? Just say morning/afternoon/howzit or wave! It costs you nothing.

Please stop this gratuitous greeting. I can't stand it. I want to ride and think about my sins, not make eye contact with every Tom, Dick and Lance on the road and fatigue my neck by nodding. I'll acknowledge you when I stop next to you at the traffic light and I'll grunt to hear if you need help with a puncture, but anything over and above that is a moerse bonus.

I remember way back when i was a laaitjie, all cyclist used to greet each ther - whether you were a "fun" rider, or if you were a more serious rider... these days most okes on there expensive p!$$y bikes think they are the bees knees and even strain their necks to see what bike you are riding - then they seem to decide to greet or not.

I also think it's that "superioristic" attitude that makes us hated by drivers and the like.

I come from a mtb background and they all seem to be quite friendly. Each to their own I suppose. I will still greet you though. If you respond, cool. If you don't, well that's your perrogative.

Do you greet everybody you walk or drive past?

No, but I have had a gripe for years with cyclists not acknowledging one another, as a cyclist when I see other cyclists I at least feel like we are all part of the same family, so a little nod , wave, hi or even the middle finger would be welcome.

The problem is that every second cyclist sits on his egotistical high chair thinking that when you see him you should be impressed with him as he is the next "big thing"

Gosh, the running community are much friendlier, perhaps because they all have something in common, and that is the fact that they respect one another as runners.
