Any tips for getting over a cold? I've had one on and off for about 2 months now, and every time I do some hard cardio exercise it comes back again. Starting to really depress me. I take vitamins, eat really healthy stuff etc, but the cold won't bugger off!

Any ideas .. common experiences??

A lot of people have been suffering with this in the cape this year. Are you sure it isn't an allergy though, with spring arriving?

It might be more like a chronic allergy. Hubby had the same thing. He's using Deselex now on a daily basis and the problem is gone. It's an over the counter (no prescription needed) thing and totally legal (if that's an issue for you).

just overdose on vitamin C and try suck medi-keels or some other anti-bacterial losenger every 2 hours.... that usually works well for me... I also take extra care to gargle with a anti-bacterial mouthwash as often as my day allows...

just to add about the allergy thing ... without being gross, my snot is green (ok that is gross) which is what tells me that its a cold.

To beat a cold you need to know how big it is in order to gauge what size stick you need to beat it with!!

No seriously, are you getting enough carbs in your diet? If you are trying to loose weight and train hard on a low carb diet during winter then you are gonna get sick all the time.

If you add having kids at nursery school to the equation then you can just forget being healthy for any period of time longer than a month!!

If you are really struggling and your immune system is low you can ask your doctor to give you an immuno-globulin injection... fairly pricey, but should help you kick it...

Also try the new Hot Toddy tea.  Haven't tried the capsules, but the tea definitely helps.  I know you can get it at clicks, not sure where else.

anitbiotics are used far to commonly for simple colds which don't require such treatment... I have found that it is usually best to treat a cold without the use of antibiotics...

Ask for Locabiotal at the chemist, its a localised anti-bacterial and anti-biotic mouth and nasal spray. Use that every coupe hours and that will help kill the infection and it won't get absorbed into your bloodstream like an oral antibiotic...

It is quite likely that the infection is a localized viral infection in which case all antibiotics will do is help prevent a secondary bacterial infection... however once the course is finnished you will still have your cold and on top of that your immune system would have taken a hit from the antibiotics...

You said this was a recurring problem which is why I think that your immune system is probably depleted... so you need to fix the route of the problem rather then treat the cold itself... thats where the immuno-globulin injection comes in... It will bolster your immune system and help prevent future infections...

I have been down this road before, and always struggled with silly colds and could never come right... eventually I got an immuno-globulin shot after being ill on and off for 3 months...since then I have been going strong...

I suggest you speak to your doctor and tell him your concerns... he will be able to advise you on a suitable course of action...

Thanks guys (and esp Cocaine) for some really valuable advice. I am going to get the imuno injection and try pumping the vitamin C. I think my immune system is totally buggered through stress, so will try to relax more - but without exercise its hard! So a vicious circle starts spinning ..
