OK so I fitted a shim into the tube alongside the seatpost, lets see if that stops the creak.

pedal pusher whilst copper slip might dry up, but seriously it lasted two days, pretty sure copper slip does not dry that fast ;)

interestingly on the seatpost one can see irregulalry shaped patterns where the anodizing/paint on the seatpost has been worn off as it has rubbed/flexed inside the seat tube.

I find creaking seat is THE easiest annoyance to fix on a bike - in my case (on two bikes) its just dust getting into tight spots, so I just loosen the bracket move the stem up and down, refasten and bob's your uncle! I think it must be one of the most irritating noises on a bike if you cant get it to stop tho...

Wow thanks niner, that is valuable information. How silly of me to call fine plastic particles grit.

incidentally the carbon paste as far as I recall has not got grit, but fine plastic particles in it

Mine didn't stop creaking after trying grease, copper slip and finally tacx assembly compound.

I ended up buying the cradles for a thomson seatpost from chainreaction and that did the trick.
