Hi All,

i recently bought a bike with race face crank, now, about 6months later, the crank is very rough and there is a "clunk/clicking" noise on the right side when i pedal hard. the clunk is always at the "1 o clock" position...

is this normal for Raceface? are these not very good cranks??

would swapping out to SLX be better? or XT maybe?

oh, can one service a race Face crank by yourself?

Hi Neg VT,

I'd suggest you have your local bike shop look at the bottom bracket, it sounds like there's a bearing issue there. So it's probably not the cranks themselves (cranks are pretty simple things).

Hubs in a BB???? Confusing to say the least.

My race face BB lasted 4 months, then it exploded. The rings were new so I could not warrant a change to shimano. I purchased a race face signature edition BB for a grand and rode the crank set for a few more km's. I now ride shimano with no quality issues at all. I was not at all impressed with race face quality nor will I purchase any race face drive train components again.

You can service the bearings yourself, but the manufacturers don't recommend it. The simplest option is to buy new SLX/XT bottom bracket cups - probably also work out the cheapest in the long run.

I went through 2 Raceface BB's in 6 months. Then had the shop replace it with a Shimano BB, still using the Race Face Evolve XC cranks & chainrings. Still going fine 2 years later.

I had a Race Face Evolve XC Crankset which developed the same noises. But when I checked the bearings they were fine. It eventually showed up as movement of the RHS crank arm.

What I found was that the RHS Crank(incl Chainrings) have a tapered spline arrangement onto the crank axle. The female part (on the crank arm) had worn, but it could not be fixed by tightening the central fixing bolt more, because the bolt bottomed out.

If this is the same as You can try to grind off a couple of millimeters off the end of the crank axle to allow you to tighten the bolt more and seat the spline properly again.
