My Forunner 305 is bust, so Im given the option to get a new 305 for R1000 or upgrage to the 310xt for about double that.

Is the Xt really worth the extra bucks.?

Ive read up on them both. I need to make a call this morning so I can still get it by friday before the 2day dace the weekend and the holidays in general.

I've read that thanks Thumper. Thing is the unit doesnt track whilst under water, so It doesnt work properly when you do swim with it. so you stil need to put it in the back of your swimcap.. So im asking myself that waterproofe plus the extended battery time is the only real bennefits.

I was faced with a similar situation about a year ago. Luckily I was able to try out a friend's 310XT; in my opinion it's worth the extra, as a fitness GPS, especially given the extended runtime (how I miss my 301!), waterproofing, and connectivity with other devices.

As far as I could find out, the 310 doesn't support Routes or Waypoints from Mapsource either, like the 305 does. I use my 305 often like that, so this seemed to be a fairly significant omission.

I didn't have the money anyway, so I settled for the 305 replacement, which suits me fine because I run 3 times a week and ride 3-4 times a week.

For rides that will exceed the 305's runtime, such as Audax, I was thinking of getting a handheld unit like the Etrex/60/70 series anyway.

I was very tempted to get the 310XT and read Rainmakers review but the fact that I already had a Edge 500 and that the tracking whilst swimming left a lot to be desired, convinced me to go with the Suunto.

Ya the swimming part is n bit of a let down. Its actually just more waterproof. I dont have the option to buy new though, so I had to do the "upgrade"

So I went with it. It seems the 310xt is a better product, maybe a bit more refined and a bit more evolved. the Battery time is cool as One dont always have time to charge at multi day events or just trekking.

My 306 gave me lots of crap, and a mate of mine's aswell. so. lets see

I've got one. Bought as an upgrade to a Polar s725x. I use it for Triathlons, road cycling and MTB and it's the bees knees! It really is fantastic and the Garmin software is awesome. The ONLY drawback I can find is that the GPS takes a while to get a 'lock' when it's overcast, but if you've used the 305 then I'm sure you've experienced it.

You won't be sorry!

Loving my 310XT. Although it doesn't give accurate tracking on the swim, with the software update it gives fairly accurate distance when you check your splits afterwards. I find it locks onto GPS signal faster than my 305. It's a nicer shape than the 305 too. I've got the quick-change strap so can use it on my bike stem too, and fits the same mount as the Edge500 (305 bike mount only fitted straight on the handlebars.)
