He does, they've released their electric groupset, and if history repeats itself it will knock the socks of Shimano...

My mate just got the new carbon campy wheels...Man those things roll with such ease... Was doing 105cadence down a hill to try catch him and he was just free wheeling away from me! not cool

Yup, and so much more. That the best example you got?

The pewter is affecting you

it has wires from hoods to derailers and a battery pack.... other wise mr riss can sit in the car during TT's and do the shifts while cyclist just churns ze pedals

Lol the Shimano site is very misleading when stating electronic shifting....then I dont see the point of paying R25k+....as i understood it had cable to the brakes, with the battery box and sensor from shifters which gives electronic signal to shift....so what does the electronic part do then?

the electronic part is that a signal gets send from the shifters to the little motors int he changers via a cable. The cool part is the front derailleur trims itself depending on the rear gear chosen. There is no swinging of levers, just the press of buttons. AND you get aditional buttons to place on top of the bars so that you do not have to go to the levers to change the gears. The same goes for the time trial shifters on the end of the extensions.

Wow, "beating" the competition when they are not even in the cyclingnews.com list is kinda pointless...

I like Campy, but they are seriously playing catchup to Di2. No matter how smooth (or not) their super duper group is, the standard is Di2 today

I'v always been a campi guy but i must admit, the electronic shimano is quite nice.

1 thing I will say is Campi are definately not playing catchup, if you look back they were the first to come out with an electronic groupset but did not persue it for long and stopped production, there were too many variables and they believed improving the tried, tested and trusted system was the better way to go.

Can still service all ur campi stuff inhouse, shimano goes funky and you have to call an electrician and a computer programer lol :P

I'm a huge Campy fan, with the only Shimano in my possession being an old 8 speed Dura Ace groupset which is cool in a retro way. It does appear though that Campagnolo may be in a bit of a bad way. I read somewhere that Shimano outsells Campagnolo in Italy of all places, so one can assume that the reason Campy is struggling to compete is largely financial. When I say compete, I don't mean in terms of quality, but in terms of sales.

This also translates into sponsorship. This year there are only four Pro teams running Campy, six running Shimano and eight on Sram. Even Italian Liquigas, a long time Campag user has defected to Sram.

While they haven't turned to the East for manufacturing, much of Campagnolo products are made in Romania, so they're not exactly "Made in Italy" any more. Sad but true.

Thanks, awesome explanation :)

I shouldn't post this, because it will give the Shimano guys some gloating ammo, but even Valentino Campagnolo thinks Shimano is pretty good(ok, extraordinary)

Some quotes

Did Shimano's electric group force Campagnolo to develop its own?

"VC: No, because Campagnolo started before Shimano. We started a little after Mavic did [in 1994]. Certainly, Japan has a history in the electronics field and this gave our rival a competitive advantage - a huge advantage. We could have anticipated our rival [shimano] if we would have reversed our priorities. Instead, we gave priority to an 11-speed group [released in 2008]."

What impresses you about Shimano?

"VC: The technical research that Shimano gives to its products. Their parts are not just good, but extraordinary. They succeeded in working hand in hand with the mountain bike movement in California. They were able to able to nurture that big market. That was a huge victory."

I guess it comes down to what you can afford. If you prefer the toyota range, go shimano/sram. If you prefer the german/italian engineering option, you know where to look :)

Amen, could not have said it better!
