Individual hill climb seeding TT

We sometimes receive requests from cyclists who want to be upgraded to a higher seeded group, but who cannot ride all the funrides. To assist these riders with an additional, mid-week event, an individual hill climb time trial has been organised for Tuesday 11 January. The event will be used for general PPA funride seeding. The hill climb is roughly 3km long.

How it will work

Simply arrive at Malanshoogte anytime between 16h00 and 18h00 (last rider starting no later than 18h00), pay the R10 entry fee, put your name down in the next available start timeslot and then ride the hill as fast as you can.

If the queues are not too long and you have the energy, you can even pay and ride more than once.

It will be a relaxed and informal affair, and riders will be set off on the climb on a first-come, first-served basis, at regular intervals.

Parking will simply be on the side of the road on the Contermanskloof/Vissershok side of the climb, although it would be preferable if you could cycle to Malanshoogte from Durbanville to warm up. The time trial will take place from the Fair Cape Dairy side, so no participants will be allowed to drive down Malanshoogte. Please do not bring and leave any valuables in your car.

Racetec will do the timing, so do ensure that you bring and wear your electronic timing chip - no chip. no time.

After doing the hill climb, why not go across to Killarney for the first training session of the year; the regular weekly Killarney sessions resuming as of Tuesday 11 January.

For more information, phone Wendy or Samantha at the PPA Office on (021) 689-8420.

I also got the email, but some people have to work only getting home at 17:30....think its silly they should have done it a Saturday morning or something where more people can enter

And the climb is the beast....with a strong headwind!

City Cycling Club goes and does their Hill Time Trials over there, and a lot of the time, on a Saturday morning. Should eb interesting with a good couple of people on the road, as there is no shoulder to ride in (granted, its not a busy road). Watch out for the headwind, it does make it a tad bit nastier :o .

Its in total about 2.3kms long, winds up, so not a dead straight ride like. I would say, something of a Chappies / the Nek cross..... Not long enough, and NO shade from the sun.... Note to self.....DONT do this in 35 degree heat again

Silly to give notice so late, and it is too early anyway, some of us do have to work

I see PPA are saying "use the hillclimb to improve your seeding"

How does seeding for this race work? What if someone like Colonel goes there and climbs it in 2mins flat - I assume no-ones seeding will improve ?

Are they hoping only slowpokes pitch up and therefor everyone will have a good result?

What??? :"Use the Hillclimb to improve your seeding???" That's not on!!! How would something like this improve your seeding, its a little 2 km burst?

lol....I can race my heart out for that 3km and be dead tired at the top and will have an amazing time that I can't talk....if I can jump from a K to a F would be awesome!

Except if the likes of colonel goes along and gets to the top two minutes quicker than you, then you are back to square one.

Anyone remember the PPA timetrials they had two years back up helshoogte?

Scary how quickly the winner got up there. Averaged 30km/h or something.

Because the event is so short, seconds just about count like minutes on a long funride.

from the email :

We've organised an additional PPA funride seeding event: Come and join us for an informal individual Hill Climb tomorrow (Tue 11 Jan) if you want to try and improve your PPA funride seeding.

if its that easy, why don't you race your heart out every race and beat everyone by 10 minutes :)

The point is, as quickly as you do it, if someone like kemp/garret/wakefield pitches up, they're gonna take 2-3minutes out of your time, regardless of how hard you push

PPA and there seeding....

Perhaps the fact that they sent it out so late and not many people know about it will work in the favour of the few that rock up.

I think it's unfair that this event should be allowed to influence your seeding, or they should have more of them so that its not an anomoly, and allows others to also have theor shot at "Improving" their seeding

What was more scary is how badly they cocked up the timing. They gave me a 20km/h average which was way too quick for that climb - average of around 9% I think. Most riders had at least 30 seconds chopped off their actual times, although some had no deduction at all. At least PPA are using timing chips for this thing.
