Had exactly the same injury, cracked radial head bone after crashing at Carnival City race in 2009. Took 6 weeks to recover and I don't really have any issues now. I've been taking Arthro Choice tablets since then, at my orthopaedic surgeon's recommendation, to minimise my chances of arthritis at a later stage in life.

What sort of treatment did you receive? Cast or sling and for how long?

Thanks

double fracture of olecranon - 1 horizontal, 1 vertical ... 7 screws and a 1 plate later!

2 months in sling, then 5 months with about 10 deg movement.

plate and screws removed 8 months later i think it was ... full mobility now after lots of hard NHS physio on the UK.

full range of movement now .. plus, as an added bonus, i still have the screws and plate in case i do it again.

get the right orthopaedic surgeon if you have a choice and dont skimp on the physio and recovery exercises.

No specific medical treatment, other than having my arm in an aircast and sling for 4 weeks, followed by bandaging and a limited range of motion for a further 2 weeks. I also got a fair bit of physiotherapy - which hurt like hell in the beginning.

WVW, did you have the cast put on after the sling? If so, why?

It was on recommendation of my doc as well as a second opinion. So the reasoning I am not to sure, but after two docs said cast, I cast-ed laugh.gif

I even took a tumble on it again on more than one occasion and no abnormal pain or anything - so for me it worked out well

@Cycle Fan and others with radial head fractures.

How has recovery and rehab been coming along?

I clashed with a pedestrian just before end Feb, and had a sling for 2-3 weeks, after which I did not start physio as the elbow was still very swollen and sore, with very limited movement possible, plus memories from physio gone bad after a broken foot many years ago.

I only started riding the mtb again last week and pain is bearable for about an hour. Next few day lots of tenderness. But it is still recovering, full extention is about 5 degrees off.

I have come to realise that the bone heals relatively quickly, but that it is the soft tissue damage that causes the complications. Some people might be lucky (?) and do not damage the ligaments, muscles and nerves, while others are not so fortunate. I suspect I have some ligament and nerve damage to content with. I am going to start physio next week and was wondering who knows a good elbow physio. I only know about Dr Dennis van Aswegen.

Apparently Michael Mol talked about this on his program on Sunday afternoon on SABC3. He also injured his elbow during a crash and advised viewers to rather aim for the shoulder, sacrifice the clavicle and save the elbow. My father in-law saw this and had the opportunity to try it out on Tuesday afternoon. He failed to clip out in time, aimed for the shoulder, missed and fell on his hip – he suffered a broken femur and is now recovering after receiving a pin in the leg.

Moral of the story – try your best to land on your feet! Cats can't be wrong.

@Cycle Fan and others with radial head fractures.

I 2009 my wife crashed out of the Lionman. Fractured elbow - radial head. Took her eight weeks to get back to work!!!

And the funny thing is, she is a physio so she knows all about it!!!

PM me if you are in the PTA area and would like to talk to her. She works part time from home as well.

Hi recovery has been better than expected. I have full range of motion back but muscles in forearm are still really weak. I can cycle an# do most things ok. I Wld really recommend seeing a physio just to be sure

Thanks for the feedback.

@MJ, I will send a PM if I do not come right.

My forearm grip is almost back to normal. The biceps is also not too bad. Triceps seems to be the problem area. It is VERY tender just above the elbow. In general I can pull, but not push.

I fractured elbow in 2008, doc gave me choice of sling or cast. I went cast cause i know they was no way my arm was going to be in the sling. Best decesion i made as i havent had a days issue with it since it came out the cast.

Injury was from mtb, joined a slow road group and rode with cast on to keep fitness up
