Went for a 3 hour ride on Sunday at the local trail centre and I see that my heart rate went as high as 186 on a few occassions...

Is that too high?

On my Polar I have max HR set at 165 and I usually ease off a little when it starts to beep.

Wow, loaded question...hmmm, let start with -

1. How old are you?

2. How fit are you?

3. Too high for what? Fat burning / Riding / Racing?

There are a lot of variables here to understand first.

Thanks my man.

I am new at the whole HR thing (as you can see.

I am 28 and quite fit. I was pushing quite hard on Sunday as I was keeping up with a mate of mine who is far fitter and faster than I am...

On Sunday I rode the Cape Cobra.

My height throughout remained a constant 1.70m.

Is this too short for a ride like the Cobra?

Like height, heart rate is only a number. Learn what works for you and train around that.

No worries dude. That would just be because you were riding Giba :)

Who said you max heartrate is 165? Guess what, your new max is 186. Nobody can tell you what it should be without you actually doing a test. I try to push mine to the max atleast once or twice on a ride. If I go over it (not because of powerlines or other interference), I adjust it.

No worries man, enjoy learning about the sport.

What you CAN push to is your max and like mampara said, best is to do a test (proper warmup, progressively harder hill repeats, or something of the sort). What you SHOULD push to depends on many things -

- Your fitness, we just read of a guy dying from a heart attack because he was perhaps pushing to hard (with respect could have been other issues as well).

- Your goal during the ride, are you doing base training, tech stuff, intervals or having fun, its all different

Thanks chaps. I appreciate the input.

186 just seemed high but to be honest I have no idea what my max heart rate is or could be! I will go out this weekend and do a few hill sessions and see what it does.

I know when my heart rate hit 186 and I honestly cannot remember feeling out of breathe or as if I wanted to explode...

Onwards we learn.

Alot of people work on 220 minus your age . So 220 - 28 = 192... So there is still some room for improvement, lol.

This is not a set rule and varies with everybody, but this is a good guide line for someone like yourself who is new to the whole heart rate thing.

Hop it helps.

Yes, last year I found I was too short and had to climb an extra 12 inches for every hill. This year I have done regular stretching sessions on an old rack I bought from a spanish guy on e-Bay. I found my general performance was 73.5% better and specifically on the hills I was head and shoulders above the competition.

At last a sensible post on the Hub.

Had to happen sooner or later.

Hi, a common calculation for max heart rate is MaxHR = 220 - age. But it can vary from one guy to an other.

That would give a value of 192 for you ( you're 28 correct?). So you've reached 186 on a hill? 95% of your max HR, that seems highly possible and it looks that there's nothing to worry about.

I bought a heart rate monitor a few month ago and I'm still learning to use it. You'll learn soon what Max heart rate you can reach and how long you can keep on riding at a certain heart rate without killing yourself.
