The cheaper the better, you should be replacing your MTB chain every 1000-1500km MAX, this will insure that your cassette and chainrings last much longer.

Being a SRAM MAN, as a comparison, in the Sram 9sp chain range the more money you spend, the more esoteric the benefits. Eg. hollow pins, nickel plated links to prevent the chain from rusting etc.

The odds of a chain rusting through on the highveld are fairly slim if you bother to clean & lube. So I buy in bulk (CRC used to sell three- packs of the cheapies) and get the cheap stuff. The savings were significant (less than R90 at the time for a chain), and the chains are far cheaper than replacing chain rings & cassette.

Ah bull, I got over 5000km out of a LX chain and cassette and chainrings was still fine.

Yes I find the 3 pack offer from CRC is excellent I use XT chains and at around 180 rand a pop from CRC really cant beat it for value for money

Got the XTR chain for R320, the XT chain is R280. Not to much in it. But if the XT is the better chain ill exchange it.

Where do you buy it for that price?

As far as I know Ultegra/XT and Dura Ace/XTR chains?

I'm a Shimano fan, but for the last 12months I only use SRAM PC971 chains. Good value for money (XT level) and you get a new quick link included. They do last longer than XT. I use about 6 chains a year on my bike. Clusters go a long way normally.

Why waste chain, if a casette almost cost the same price?

Guys would use 3 chains where they could use 1 chain, JUST TO SAVE THE POOR CASETTE.

Back to topic, are you a weight weenie? Then go for XTR

I ride on XTR chains, they are a waste of money, I got mine for a steal here on the hub so I bought them, the XT chains pound for pound are awesome value, the SRAM chains are also ok the extra quick link is a nice bonus. All chains will give you good mileage if you clean and lube them often, the drive traoin should out last 6 or more chains if the chain is replaced befor it gest too elongated.

The type of terrain is also inportant, a cahin ridden in the dry on tar roads will out last a chain ridden off road, wet and in the mud. I have totalled a LX chain in 500kays, rode like a knob through all sorts of *** and did not lube and clean properly, that was in my noob MTB'ing days.

The savages here on the hub corrected my wayward ways however.

I now get 1000kays plus, will def use XT chains as soon as my current XTR chain is kaput, after last week's ride at teak, where I actually managed to twist my chain whilst still attached to my bike, I hade to use my chain breaker and remove a link to get the damn thing un-twisted and off the bike, even screwed up a tooth on my big blade for my troubles. Was funny though.
