We are looking at buying a MTB for my wife. I am clueless when it comes to this and would appreciate some help. We are looking at spending more or less R4000. I have seen the following bike in this price range:

Gary Fisher Marlin GSR 4,700
Trek 4500 WSDR 5,250
Giant YukonR 4,700
Merida Matts TFS 100 VR 3,700

Could anyone suggest anything else in this price range, and which of these bikes would you rate best value for money.

My wife has the Trek 2300.  LOVE IT!

I have had the Yukon.  Cool bike.  Bit on the heavy side but the new ones should be lighter.

Merida is always good value for money.

MOST IMPORTANT THING THAT A LADY LOOKS AT WHEN BUYING A BIKE......?  COLOR!!!!!  Big%20smile

DO NOT TRY AND SUPPRISE HER!!Wink

On the price range you are looking at, all the components should be roughly the same on the each bike.

Good luck and enjoy the whole experience.  This is 70% of cycling....buying your bike!!

The price of the Trek looks a bit on the expensive side (Deore fitted), perhaps its because its WSD,  Merida i think is good value, also have a look at the GT.

How about a Felt, or a Mongoose Evil%20Smile? Have a look at this site for pricing info:

It helped me to not only select a bike, but also to haggle the price a bit :)

Thanks a lot hubbers, I got most of these prices from Cycle lab, and will go shop around this weekend. We will have a look at the other bikes you suggested. I agree she definately has too choose it herself Smile.

If you're anywhere near the Hyde Park area, check out Dunkeld Cycles (at the back of the center cnr Jan Smuts & Bompas) - They have quite a lot of stock.

OR!! Give the wifey your old bike and get yourself a newer, better one :) Evil%20Smile

I am in Pretoria, if I dont find anyting I will definately go and have a look there thanks.

Giving the wife my bike and buying me a new one might seem like a good idea now but I will only be riding my new bike and nothing else. If you know what I am saying Wink

Take her with to all the shops I found that they (woman) choose bikes differently, color and comfort not specs like us.

Grant cycles in centurion have a whole range of Merida, Silverback and GT.

Got my Gf a RED Merida this week.

That just makes it worse (the decision what to buy not the bike) , if she favours the GF but gets something else and does not like it .... .

Dont envy you .
