i have them (on risebars aswell) and i must say i use them all the time! especially after a long ride on really bumpy terrain.

i find them extremly comfortable for climbing aswell.

they are very important ....... what else is that lone tree branch going to grab onto and get a closer look, causing me to dismount into the section of track that is treeless?

A change (of handposition) is as good as a holiday. OK admittedly, I got a pair of Ergon grips with integrated bar-ends as a bday present and they are awesome.

They do ease the strain on your hands...

It stops the numbness in your hands if you can change position. Normally you need to take your hands of the handlebars to shake it out, this way you still have full hold whilst restoring the feeling.
