i have them (on risebars aswell) and i must say i use them all the time! especially after a long ride on really bumpy terrain.

 

i find them extremly comfortable for climbing aswell.

The also add another position for your hands, giving ways to relieve the pressure point on your hands.

They do make a big difference. Just changing your hands on really long rides gives a bit of relief.

they are very important ....... what else is that lone tree branch going to grab onto and get a closer look, causing me to dismount into the section of track that is treeless?

A change (of handposition) is as good as a holiday. OK admittedly, I got a pair of Ergon grips with integrated bar-ends as a bday present and they are awesome.

i connected a section of fencing, yes my bike did stop dead and no i did not.

+1 :thumbup: Who cares if you should or shouldn't have them on risebars! They work for me. :rolleyes:

They do ease the strain on your hands...

 

It stops the numbness in your hands if you can change position. Normally you need to take your hands of the handlebars to shake it out, this way you still have full hold whilst restoring the feeling.
