Hi guys

I'm not really a roadie, but do own a road bike that I use for the Argus and some training rides. I've never replaced the tyres, but after 2 punctures in the 99er yesterday I think its time. Can anyone recommend descent tyres for around R200.

I saw these on CWC: http://www.cwcycles.co.za/product/serfas-seca-rs-folding-road-tyre

Don't know the brand, but they seem fairly light for the price and claim to be puncture resistant.

sorry for the hijack, but i would love to hear the response. Im in same situation, 3 punctures for Die burger, and now 1 for 99er, both ocassions leaving me trailing behind.

Its my 1st argus coming up and would hate the same to happen!

I have used the Continental Gatorskins for years now and never had a problem, touch wood not even a puncture. Crown Cycles is selling them for R300, worth it all the way.

Michelin Dynamics, not the cheapest you can get but for the price they sell for, not the worst out there.

I,m a big guy and the 23c dynamics have served me well the last 4 years. Minimal punctures, even after they get older and i put them on my training wheels.

Those serfas seca tires are good in my opinion, just bought a set yesterday @ CWC. Stay away from Specialized all condition tires.......got a puncture at least every day, if it wasn't for my specialized airlock tubes I would have been in an institution of some kind by now

I'd go for the Continental Gatorskins.

I have mine for 4yrs and have not had a puncture yet.(touch wood)

Completed 3 DC's plus an unthinkable amount of fun & training ride in them.

Isn't the Gatorskins a "slower" racing tyre, due to the amout of grip it has with the road surface?

if its slow enough to keep up when wheel sucking, then i should give it a try

Continental Gatorskin

When I first started riding I bought cheap tyres and I would get up to 2 punctures a ride. I fitted Gatorskin and will never go back to cheap tyres

I had Michelin Race on my race wheels, never had a puncture with those but they were even more expensive than the Gatorskin

Those Serfas don't look bad though, I just checked the link.

Pressure is also important no matter what tyres you buy, check before every ride!!!!

The same set for 4 years?

Conti Gatorskins or if you can get Conti 4 Seasons then even better.

i think the michelin lithion on sale @cwc for R190 is also a good bet. lots of my friends are riding them and say they roll well. They are more hard wearing than the pro race 3. BTW they were revieved in the latest Bicycling mag. a common cause for multiple puncture is worn rim tape so replace this as well.

+1

94.7 & Ride for sight on tandem + all training rides ... only see other people fixing puntures.

Personal choice "but" you need a tyre with a puncture resistant lining like a gatorskin or even a hardcase, or one of the more expensive brands. The "sport" tyres (R100 to R200) are inadequate. They have little resistance to glass which is our main problem in SA. Glass also sits under the surface of the thicker, softer rubber and leads to repunctures. I have tried a number of the cheaper tyres (Bontrager sport, Conti ultrasport and Maxxis detanators). In my case the last mentioned performed best but I would not re purchase.

The Continental gatorskins have reasonable resistance to punctures and are really training tyres but most of your opposition will be on them as well. In addition to Crown, Solomons have them at R300 including a tube. Interesting tyre write ups on bikereview.
