Howz this - about 5 hours before my Kulula flight to Johannesburg, Ride Magazine, who had commissioned me to do a feature and daily coverage on the Tour of SA, dropped me. I caught the flight anyway, since I've paid for my expenses upfront, and of course at the time they said they'd reimburse me my expenses. Called Adele Tait today and asked her if she's still going to honor the expenses I've incurred [included a flight to PE] - she wants to know why I flew up to early...which sounds like a no. I've told them I'm going to seek legal action if they don't honor at least the expenses that I was essentially tricked into paying...

I think the reason they reneged on the deal was initially CSA only seemed to want a core group of accredited media [i was one], but later they invited and are still inviting everyone. So I think Ride saw an opportunity to save a few bucks by ditching me at the last moment. Turns out the editor herself applied for accreditation on the day that they gave me the finger. Oulik ne!

Hello!

Taking off my moderators cap - and popping on a legal one - this is definitely not the best place to do something like this. Several MASSIVE warning signals are flickering all over what's been alleged here. And most of the time, going the public route in an attempt to 'massage' a solution, almost always backfires. I don't know you from a bar of soap - so I could just as easily have ignored this (as you no doubt will request me to), but I really am being sincere in my advice - if this escalates, you're going to need a lawyer who doesn't shy away from a fight. There must be a simpler, not-to-mention, cleaner way of getting this sorted?

Putting my moderators cap back on - PM us if you reconsider your approach here, and it will disappear.

Happy Hubbing.

Um yup up until they ditched you man thereafter not - so you should have cancelled the flight and the trip ;)

My 2 cents - you got on the flight - your call.....agree with Rod not sure if the public forum is the way to go on this...

Having experienced very much the same thing myself a couple of times with varying clients as well, I can fully understand your frustration.

It's an abuse and exploitation that happens all too frequently in our field unfortunately.

Still, this really isn't the best approach. I sit with SAFREA, if you want, PM me. Hopefully I'll be able to put you in touch with the right folk to help you solve this constructively or advise therof. It's a great resource of different media professionals and a wealth of experience.

A public slanging match more often than not never results favorably for either party.

Not quite, it's still an incurred expense, wether the aircraft has been boarded or not. This is why many people set a kill fee as well though.

Maybe she was worried you would spell the riders' names wrong? :)

I presume you have spoken to her bosses before posting your rant here? I would love to hear Adele's side of the story before making up my mind who owes whom what here.

Beyond that, which I think we will be unlikely to be educated on here anytime soon, if she has commissioned you, and you have laid out cash, then the decent thing to do would be to reimburse you. But, I think you might have mucked that up now, by opening your big yap here, so decency will be replaced by something legal, and you ain't going to see a cent. Threatening to call in a lawyer was a good, and justified move. Boasting about it here, before you have, not so clever.

Oh, and I am sure the other cycling mag editors will have read this by now. They just love a writer with attitude, who isn't afraid of making them look bad.

Not the smartest move Cyclejourno.

I mean really, if you want that next assignment, don't get on the editor's wrong side. After all, there are but a handful of local cycling publications in SA!! I know that's no excuse for unreasonable behaviour (as presented from your perspective only), but try and resolve your issues behind closed doors. You might recover the cost of an airline ticket, but you might just never write for RIDE again. :o

Thanks for the constructive feedback. Will get in touch. Your one point is 100% - if I were to wait until flight day the flight costs would have trebled. Anyone knows to get the cheapest flights you book 2-3 weeks in advance.
