You know times are tough when....

So I have not been doing to many races in the last year and entered two races this month.

I can see times are really getting tough out there when I look at the "race packs" given out now a days.

Collected my number today and they gave you a key ring and WASP Gel.

I understand that they do not have to give you anything but it shows how the sponsors are cutting back on providing goodies for marketing.

Is the same in all the different sports hosting races or is this only in cycling?

Did the Sasol X duathlon on Sunday.

I was out there for 90 odd minutes.

I got a fruit bar,a roll on , rooibos tea, heel balm and Bettaway Salmon oil capsules and a T-shirt .

Sometimes the worlds most random items come in race packs

That's all the marketing stuff they can't give away to suspecting people so they stuff it into unsuspecting cyclists race goodie bags ;)

The Emperor's Classic goodie bag was pretty poor a sachet of jolt, an old edition of a cycling magazine and enough brochures to wallpaper a bedroom

The Ride for Sight was pretty impressive: a cookbook, an electric (de)humidifier, toothpaste, bum paste, shampoo, vitamins, energy bar, chocolate, sweets, .... the ubiquitous Jolt, plus some other stuff

They can keep all the useless stuff if it means I don't have to drive 60km to go and pick up my number.

Old magazines and flyers fill the bags, keep the crap and give us discount on the entry fee

I sense the sarcasm.

On the subject of race packs.

What do people really expect for the money they pay ?

They get a race start, marshals, a marked and designed route, price giving, water tables, a drink at the finish, race information and and and ................

For this they want a feast of a race pack.

One thing I have come to realise in South Africa, appreciation for the value of time is non existent.

When did we become a nation who just expects hand outs and favours around every corner ?

I don't recall it being like that when I was a youngster.
