Yeah, I remember.

my thought was just it takes a lot of experience to consistently win grand tours.

Interesting.

Merckx won his first at 24. We know what he went on to do.

Hinault won his first at 24, and he went on to win many more tours.

Ullrich, won at 24, and collapsed into a worthless heap.

Contador won at 24, and is going to go on winning for many years.

Bartali also won at 24, but because of the war, we'll never know. Interestingly, he almost book-ended (Maes won in '39) the war, winning in '38 and '48 (Robic winning in '47)

Do you know if they will have a public announcement on their decisions.? I havent seen anything, but I imagine its prudent to do so, at the moment there's lots of perceptions which need to be addressed.

There is/was a press conference with Contador and Riis today. Haven't heard anything yet.

Edit: I see Fignon won at 23. Then the next year at 24. I think he was done mentally by then. It wasn't the tri-bar vs the pony-tail that done him in '89, I reckon his metal was gone.

Hmm, maybe differant times as well. Modern tours have become as much of a promotional extravaganza as a sporting one, long tv talks, sponsor requirements, etc............I dont know, I just remember 'Berto's words at the last tour he won "some tours are won in the bedroom" - kinda puts the stress management required into perspective.

Yeah, I guess you have a point. That said, the Tour started as a PR/marketing exercise. It was invented to sell newspapers, and ad space in said newspaper, so the burden of promotion has been there from the start.

Yip!

In time for the Tour Of Spain whose 2012 route is made for mountaingoats again this year...

Berto is gonna come out firing two pistols in that Grand Tour on home soil.

WHICH TEAM is the big question.

and said newspaper was yellow paper, hence the yellow jersey

Any newspaper from over 100 years ago is going to be yellow(ish) by now.

Hierdie is bull***t. Skuldig of nie, die proses is verkeerd. Dis soos die Waterkloof vier. Teen die tyd wat hulle gevonnis is, kon hulle al vry gewees het mits hulle aanvanklik skuld erken het.............

Ullrich not 23 when he won ?

Sorry, yes, I was working on remembered birth years, not actual birthdays, and the ginger, being a Dec baby, makes him 23.

Still, makes the point even more this way.
