We know what he went on to do.Hinault won his first at 24, and he went on to win many more tours.Ullrich, won at 24, and collapsed into a worthless heap.Contador won at 24, and is going to go on winning for many years.Bartali also won at 24, but because of the war, we'll never know. Interestingly, he almost book-ended (Maes won in '39) the war, winning in '38 and '48 (Robic winning in '47)

I havent seen anything, but I imagine its prudent to do so, at the moment there's lots of perceptions which need to be addressed. There is/was a press conference with Contador and Riis today. Haven't heard anything yet.

TNT1 Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 Edit: I see Fignon won at 23. Then the next year at 24. I think he was done mentally by then. It wasn't the tri-bar vs the pony-tail that done him in '89, I reckon his metal was gone.

Modern tours have become as much of a promotional extravaganza as a sporting one, long tv talks, sponsor requirements, etc............I dont know, I just remember 'Berto's words at the last tour he won "some tours are won in the bedroom" - kinda puts the stress management required into perspective.

Yeah, I guess you have a point. That said, the Tour started as a PR/marketing exercise. It was invented to sell newspapers, and ad space in said newspaper, so the burden of promotion has been there from the start.
