Tons Sports in Oudtshoorn. Know what they're doing, willing to suggest cheaper (and no worse) alternatives, and well connected for getting hold of stuff. Don't forget they're involved in organising the Cape Pioneer Trek - say no more

'Toppie (Big H) - the question was about LBS - Local Bike Shop...............you now want to place your "rulz".....

Ask for the criteria, but the original post was pertaining to LBS..............unless, of course, you don't know what LBS stands for.......

You are quite right boetie ......... I live in Nigeria ..... Www.chainreaction.com IS my closest "LBS"

Whu Yu think is dumb now....... Huh??????

The way I see it if it happens is we get a few hubbers in each area that are willing to go and visit the shop.

Thats more to the point. for this to be effective you need a kinsey type report with a std spares basket and maintenance test. Second problem with this is that it needs to be regional and equally represented. As it stands thehub demographic is biased towards certain provinces - they will therefore influence results. Final problem as mentioned earlier is perception - orange vs purple. i would vote for my lbs that i have been using since the late 70's - doesnt mean they are the best though

Oh, then Cajees! Local, and the best ever. Their service, commitment to customer satisfaction, and knowledgeable attention to detail is the best I have ever experienced.

They also double the price! R700 pair of Giro gloves R750 at Cajees-R650 at Sports mans-R590 at another LBS. The Giant trance x2(2010) was R22,0000 at the beginning of the year and now is R23,9999.

That makes it a bad LBS in my books!

Edit:This is centurion branch, things might be different at the other ones.

Oh man, people can go off topic so quickly. The question was not "Which is the best LBS" or "How dumb am I", but "Would a LBS of the year award be a worthwhile idea". Punting your LBS here serves no purpose - there are many other threads where you can do so.

Leet, I think it is a very good idea, subject to the following:

1. Regional. I think this will add value to the Hubbers and make it easier to judge as the same person won't have to fly to CT, JHB, PTA, Bloem, DBN, PE, Upington, ... In reality Hubbers want to know which is the best LBS in their area.

2. Independent. The award should not be based on votes, but rather a panel of Hubbers who visit each bike shop and award points on a consistent basis. But I think this is your idea already.

3. Criteria. A bike shop may be good in one area and not another. As an example, I use one bike shop for service and another for parts, based on their strengths. Sub-category winners might also add further value.

These are my thoughts and I like the idea. We may need sponsorship to cover the cost of the survey (for example kick off the rear derailer and see how well each bike shop repairs it). It can become expensive!
