Now a quick question for motorist. He has brought up a problem with a specific club. He has recieved all the info needed to report the incident to the clubs pr lady. Now will he take it futher?

If not then why post at all. After all information is power is it not?

Right or wrong, I'd love to just once get one of these motorists, put them on a bike, and drive past them the way they do to cyclists. Even better, can I strap them into the passenger seat, put their kids, wives, loved ones on bicycles and drive past them with the same complete dis-regard for human life they exhibit?

Listen up morons, it's not about how right you are, or how you (often incorrectly) interpret the law, it's about treating other south africans, other human beings with some dignity and respect.

Wise up.

It is unfortunate that your attitude will probably be carried over to your two year old and that they will also in future have this 'grudge toward cyclists' mentality. I don't think the fact that we're saying cyclists are allowed to ride on the right of the yellow line is being mentioned to suit cyclists but merely to show that those of us who do ride there, do so out of consideration. This should not be taken for granted and perhaps you should in turn, when some cyclists do stray into your path, practice some consideration yourself. How about being a shining example to Motorist Jr of how road users should act instead of ploughing your energy into taking pictures, registering on a forum to post them and making some ill-informed comments.

Riding in the yellow lane is not only consideration. We do it mainly for our own safety. In any case, I agree with Motorist on this one. That bunch of cyclists are going to piss people off and someone is going to get hurt. Any person with basic manners would be courtious to others. That group clearly does not have basic courtesy. They are also a very bad marketing campagin for MTN and their club.

My advice is that Motorist should take their behaviour up with their sponsors.

Let me just say:

When there is a bike race like "ride for sight", "carnival city", etc, etc with no road closure then its ok for us to ride all over the road in huge groups 50- 200 cyclists every 5 min apart, not having a care for cars or traffic. No one then has a camera to say, look at how bad they are cycling.

Now when you are on a training ride with 20 odd cyclists, at 6am on a very quite road with maybe 15 cars an hour it becomes a huge issue ?

Honestly, sometimes the plank in someones eye is a splinter is anothers.

MY advice to my fellow cyclists is to ride safe without endangering your life.

My advice to motorists is to be a little patient on that quite road where there is hardly any traffic and you find yourself behind some cyclists on a country road.

From both sides there should be a little tolerance and no advantages taken.

I agree that riding more than two abreast on a training ride is wrong, however in a road race with no road closure we as cyclists find it acceptable.

Its a confising moral position, but one which we accept and tolerate.

Maybes its just the way things work. Who Knows ? All I know I love cycling and see you all at carnival cycle race tomorrow.

I rode with Club 100 in CT 5 years back, and was involved on the committee, and organized their obligatory annual club-hosted race.

I left the club due to poor riding attitude by a few individuals - always wanting to chat, chat, chat, and thus riding 3 or 4 abreast in inappropriate areas.

The club also went slowly through red traffic lights, but individuals would get MOST upset with taxi's, etc doing the same.

For a while, it did seem like one rule for cyclists, one for all other road users, so now I ride alone, or with a mate, and never (rarely ever) give any motorist any cause to get upset/annoyed with, and hopefully set an example to others.

In my experience, a few cylists are their own worst enemies, and motorists are mostly understanding - obviously exceptions apply.

Cheers

.... I decided never again, solely based on the way these guys ride ... I'm now considering selling the road bike for an mtb. Bottom line is that in an accident the big chunk of metal is going to win over the small piece of carbon fibre every single time so why cyclist expect motorists to go out of their way to guarantee cyclists' safety is beyond me. Why not go out of our way to keep ourselves safe?

totally agree ... and welcome to the MTB side :)

get some respect and tolerance. then there will be no problems.

from both sides.

we can't expect motorists to show respect and tolerance if we don't do the same.

there's a few kms of tar on my daily commute. traffic is dangerous enough as it is, i don't need irrate motorists taking there frustraion about other cyclists, out on me :(

ALL THIS VENTING IS GREAT BUT HOW MANY MOTORISTS ACTUALLY READ CYCLING FORUMS?

I THINK TO REACH CONSESNUS THE PRESS MEDIA SHOULD PUBLISH A SHORT ARTICLE MONTHLY, IN THAT WAY IT WILL REACH A FEW MORE OF THE TARGET MARKET, NAMELY CYCLISTS AND MOTORISTS, THOUGHTS?

consensus? i would love that mutual respect? in an ideal world; not even THAT ideal, i've seen it in ireland when i cycled on very narrow roads, that's all there were; cars waited patiently till it was safe.

.... but read the remarks in this article (link that BigH posted in another thread last week)

http://www.beeld.com/Suid-Afrika/Nuus/Onbeskofte-Sandton-motoriste-steek-stok-in-fietsren-se-wiel-20110220

the remarks were void of human-ness ... barbaric, almost .... and seriosly made me reconsider my commute route :(

why are we so angry?

no harm done thanks deloco, i am putting these pics up to show people what we have to put up with every day and the usual response is (what is the rush just wait a little bit or just go around them)that is all fine if it was only one group but in a 10km drive from my house to the shops i have to wait or go around 5-10 groups .

Hmmmm.... Normally I don't even want to get involved with these debates as I think they are pretty pointless and is as exciting as looking at a tumbledryer. But here goes.

Motorist ... Every day I (as a motorist, cyclist and pedestrian) have to put up with other motorists who are driving like absolute idiots. Just this past Sunday I rammed into the back of a motorist who decided to stop dead in Chapmans peak drive around a corner.

When is the last time you posted a pic of cyclist behaving well. I assume you first reaction would be that it propably does not happen. Most that I see behave well. But I am sure you are not interrested in noting that here.

I wonder what the reaction of motorists would be if I would start taking pictures of them and post it on motoring messages boards. Quite frankly I do not have time to waist like that. You've got the club details. If it bothers you so badly sort it out with them and stop gereralising.

I wish South Africans will actualy stop gereralising. Cyclists behaving badly, Roadies don't greed, etc. Grow up and sort out your issues with those people that causes the problems.

Rather start by leading by example.

Today at 9h15 going down the hill from Kloofsig to Avianto, 15 riders, mostly 3 abreast, solid white line and bends so you cant see past them.

Took me 3km before I could find a safe (for both the cyclists and myself) way past. Whilst I was behind them, not once did any of the riders look behind or acknowledge my existance.

Now that is the problem!...

I could fill this site with the inconsiderate way our motorists drive , but do I do it, no it's not worth my time. At times even I break the traffic law e.g. Speeding etc..

None of us are perfect , so OP , chill , relax and enjoy the view...I cover about 70 000 km's driving a year so I've seen some crazy drivers ...I just chill man,,,no use blowing a gasket...my 2c
