    Tinnitus

It's a condition that a very large percentage of the population have. Many different things (meds, exposure to noise, etc) cause damage to the nerves in the auditory canal, so it can't be fixed at this time. I've had it for years, and have slowly gotten used to it. It's always there, I just tend not to notice it unless the ambient noise stops and there's silence (like late at night). White noise helps a lot to mask it (background sounds like aircon, traffic, etc). You can get a white noise generator if you want to control the environment more. Good luck, you're not alone, nor crazy, and while it won't go away there's no need to despair, it gets bearable.
  2. And speaking of which (again!) - just started watching this: Enjoyed these guys in their earlier adventures, and this one has an interesting twist.
  3. Hi all Been looking for guidance on best buys in the LCHF thread, but that's been dormant for some time, and technology and prices(!) have moved on. These testers are a lot like ink jet printers. The unit seems cheap enough, until you start buying the test strips (or ink cartridges!). I'd appreciate some recommendations if you've bought recently, and pricing supplier names if possible. Thanks
  4. Very enjoyable, way better than the other Deon Meyer books were filmed. I had a panic attack when I got to the final episode and thought "no way, that's not the end!". But happily it wasn't - Sonarr messed up the episodes and I didn't get Ep 6. Got it this morning!
  5. Fair point. I think I'd also feel safer with a fellow casualty next to me in the ambulance.
  6. So true, and yet it goes on. But if we discourage fellow riders from calling others out then it seems we all condone bad behaviour. Personally I've witnessed a number of fatal accidents in the Cradle over the years. It's a very dangerous place to ride. And riding without concern for motorists and other riders (I'm talking about those a-holes in the "racing" bunches that ride wide and force cars to pass me closely) just shows the noobs out there how it's done. And so it continues.
  7. Reminds me of the pirate explaining the circumstances of his prosthetics to a guy in the bar. The wooden leg was the result of an anchor cable accident, the hook hand after the real one was lost to a shark bite,... "What about the eye patch, was that from a fight?" "Nope, seagull crapped in my eye!" "Good grief, how did that cause you to lose the eye?. Surely a quick wipe with a Kleenex would have worked?" "Tried that, but I'd only had the hook hand for a couple of days at that time."
  8. Especially with those "spliff windows".
  9. I've been following this since he started a couple of years ago. The attention to detail and craftsmanship (shipbuilding) is inspiring. Also following these guys - another great build.
  10. Give SADAG a call. Amazing organisation, and they'll point you to the person you need. http://www.sadag.org/
  11. From one of Deon Meyer's great books.
  12. @BenReaper - there will be very few here who don't envy you. Even the "surprise" adds to the experience.
  13. I picked it up from this: https://www.jp-sa.org/sec57cpa/ As for prints being taken, apparently (extracted from the above web link) "when you pay an admission of guilt fine which appears on one of these summonses, it will have the same effect as if you were to be found guilty by the court³. It does not say that the matter is now swept under the carpet and life resumes as normal. It furthermore says that the clerk of the court shall, “as soon as expedient enter that admission of guilt in the criminal record book for admissions of guilt”. This means that a criminal record must be registered against your name and ID number, despite the fact that no criminal docket has been registered against you by SAPS and your fingerprints have not been taken.
  14. I was ticketed at OR Tambo a couple of weeks ago for not stopping (completely) at a badly marked stop sign. Mea culpa. I was about to pay the admission of guilt fine when it was brought to my attention that paying the fine automatically gets you a criminal record. I understand that is unique to Ekhuruleni and a couple of other metros. Anyone have experience of this, and what's the best approach to deal with it? I certainly don't want that on record as it will ruin any visa and other applications in future.

    Formula 1...

I heard the commentators mention this weekend that Murray Walker has turned 97. Fantastic innings, and he has seen so much racing in his time. Although apparently he was asking Martin Brundle(?) what was happening in F1 these days. I guess he also thinks that it's not worth watching anymore. Thank goodness WRC is back (and also Seb Loeb from time to time).
  16. Great photos. The recent ones from Swartkops are amazing.
  17. It's a pity the Red Bull air races have ended. 2019 was the final season, and it's appropriate that this guy walked away as the last champion of the series. https://youtu.be/TXkGhQDYnAA

    Formula 1...

Interesting video on YouTube where Porsche took the 919 LMP1 car when it retired from competition and removed all the LMP1 limitations (engine restrictions, aero, weight) and then ran it at Spa. It broke Hamilton's lap record.
  19. Got Fulcrum (Campag) wheels when I bought the (used) bike, and I despise the noise. That's definitely the next upgrade. It's like being a Harley owner, all noise and no go (or as they say in Texas, "all hat and no steers"). A quiet bike is a well set up bike. (Also, I have tinnitus so I'm just grouchy about sound).
  20. When we start imitating birds and animals there's hope for the human race. Thinking about it, this isn't the same as drafting in the peleton. https://edition.cnn.com/travel/article/airbus-formation-flight/index.html
  21. He's really doing the business there!
  22. Interesting! One thing's for sure - when they open the throttles for take-off, that plane sure hauls ass.
  23. I flew down to PLZ with Safair for the weekend. It was great to be back in the air again. ORT was weirdly deserted on Friday, and the health procedures were in full effect. Until you get onto the plane, then it's like sardines in a can. @LWB - I was chatting to one of your colleagues while waiting at the gate in PLZ and he mentioned that the Safair planes are ex-SAA? I was wondering how old they are, because they seem to be a lot louder that some 787-800s.
