  1. The boys did us proud! They managed to hold their own amongst some tough company. I managed to snap these pics at the finals last night.
  2. The only way you are going to get on the front page of a religious magazine is if they get to burn you at the stake or crucify you! I would just stick to writing to Buycycle magazines if I were you (see how I made the link there? Cunning). Much bigger chance of you getting published there again...
  3. Just convention (I think Sheldon Brown has something to say about it)
  4. For those who don't know/forgot what the Galibier looks like, here it is. It's a freaking monster!!!
  5. Wow, I saw this thread and thought, WOW, at last people will be discussing the new route with the Alps and all the climbing, but no, just another doping thread. Should have known...
  6. "pretty big climbs"? In Holland? Come on it's flat right? I can't remember my time, but I think it was something like 6 hours for the 150km, but then again, I just rode a relaxed ride with a friend and it wasn't a mass start. You just pitched up and started when you wanted! (Yes, no professional funrider groups!) Strange how some people in SA wants a medal for completing a "one tonner". That's often the short distance over here! We did the "short" route of 150km (with about 2200m of climbing), because I just could not stomach the idea of 250km in the Limburg hills at the start of the season. Still, it was WAAAAY easier than the 176km La Marmotte in the Alps. It might not be that long, but 5000m of climbing is a different ballgame...
  7. Ah, yes, I forgot it was a PPA event! I'll keep quiet now...
  8. As far as I know the race organisers are responsible for water points and medals right? PPA give them guidelines and then it's up to the organisers to comply. PPA are blamed for lots of things they are not responsible for (and here they get praise they might not be due!)
  9. Why do you guys need bottle openers in SA? As far as I know all local attempts at beer open with twist caps?
  10. A flat bar with mtb shifters??? Come on are you building a cyclocross bike or a hybrid? Sounds more like a hybrid to me. Cyclocross frames usually have a more relaxed geometry and a higher BB to give more clearance over obastacles. To simulate that it would be best to take a normal road frame with "relaxed" geometry as base for your build. An old steel frame would be perfect or alu if you must. Then make sure your frame can handle the top-pull cyclocross brakes (if you want the real deal). Most road frames doon't have attachment options, so you might be stuck with normal v-brakes. Then if you really want to go cyclocross you have to fit the right chianrings. Usually a close match in ratios, but I guess this will not do for SA. Best you stick to a compact crank. OK, good luck and keep us posted on the update!
  11. No, not correct. MTB's are NOT allowed in cyclocross
  12. Wheels depend on terrain, but they only ride tubbies (mostly Dugast) due to the low pressures they run and have profiles for every type of terrain. Some guys take about 7 pairs of tyres along to a race just top be sure!
  13. I went to one in the snow last year! Awesome to see. Hab Belgian fries and lots of mayo (even if this one was in Holland). Awesome spectacle Here is Lars Boom in his Dutch national champ kit:
  14. Yes, but not European Champion, but World Champion! Then again, seeing that only Europe (and the US a bit) take part...
  15. Sorry, if my pseudo-scientific-mumbo jumbo sounded plausible, please accept my sincere apologies. It is 100% sucked from my thumb and I though the "banana droop" statement would be the clincher, but apparently it is not. Maybe it is the ultimate proof that the wackiest of theories can be claimed to be true if you throw a couple of fancy words together (a bit like Powerbalance thingies). Bananas are fine. They don't contain too much potassium. Don't worry. It's all going to be OK. (PS I will work hard at making my sarcasm way more obvious)
  16. Depends on experience. Does your banana droop excessively?
  17. How good are you with sarcasm? I'm guessing not THAT good, right?
  18. It's already been done! I am the proud owner of an "Amstel Gold Race" medal/bottle opener!!! Works great!
  19. It's OK, I gave them CSA's bank account details. They are bound to get screwed themselves!!!
  20. ...and I thought this thread was about those annoying emails I get from Standard Bank about updating my account details (AND I DON'T EVEN HAVE AN ACCOUNT WITH THEM!)
  21. WAAAAAAY back when I was a kid we still had corporal punishment and it did NOT deter many of my friends to "borrow" their parents car and go to the beach/shops/girlfriends/parties. Even after a horrific Vissershok incident where lots of kids were involved it still kept on happening. The sad truth is that it ruins lives and no cheap justice will solve it. Better policing will help and general attitude towards the law and laws needs to improve. Spare a thought for the families of the bikers and THEIR kids. They are the real victims here. Sad, sad day...
  22. ...but seriously folks. Bananas have had some great Potassium marketing going for themselves. Looking at real figures though, it seems they just make the fruit top 10 of potassium sources! Nevermind the wider potassium food top 10. Maybe top 100 material, but not the potassium bomb you fear. Dried fruit, baked potatoes and avo's on the other hand are extremely dangerous source of potassium!!!! Avoid at all cost! 23. Bananas MUST NOT be taken with 32GI. The electrolytic effect of Potassium binds the free radicals inhibitors in 32GI with your glycogen reserves and has a serious adverse effect on your performance. In stead of increase the 'slow burn' effect it causes you to have quite a sudden drop in your performance curve, or as refered to in the scientific community as 'banana droop'.
  24. Well, I always buy a lottery ticket with the hope that I will be prepared when they ring the doorbell. The chance of that happening is slim and the chance that I will be expecting it even smaller. Kind of similar to the chance of me anticipating an attack on my favourite piece of singletrack.
  25. I thought the only stabbing done in Luxembourg was backstabbing?!
