  1. The leadership in NZ is incredible. 6 Years after Sandy Hook, the US can't even have a vote in the senate regarding gun laws. In NZ, 6 days later and the gun laws have CHANGED, nevermind being voted on. It's amazing what can be achieved if the you are not a captured government.
  2. We are face with a multi-faceted problem: 1) Ageing infrastructure - over 50% of our coal powered plants have been operating for over 37 years with minimal maintenance done 2) The decision was taken to replace these with NEW plants (Medupi and Kusile) - both these new plants are failures, incapable of performing the job they were built for. 3) Eskom has no funds to restock their Open Cycle Gas Turbine generators with diesel 4) Tropical Cyclone Idai has taken out two major supply lines that feed our network from the Cahora bassa Hydro Electric plant - Due to flooding in the area repairs to these lines will no happen in the near future. Bottom line: South Africans - please be patient and tolerant, you will need to modify your lives around an electricity scarce environment.
  3. Anyone watching the presser with Gordhan and Mabuza? We are in Beeeeg trouble, this thing is not going away in a hurry. The tone is not very optimistic.
  4. Kudo's to SterKinekor for bringing to IMAX
  5. LOVE IT!
  6. Yeah, kinda makes sense. As a vegetarian/vegan, you look around you and all you see is people eating meat. That's bound to make you a little depressed....
  7. arghhh! that just kills me!
  8. What would be a good vegan substitute for egg? Tofu?
  9. Seriously guys do not miss this one! It lived up to the hype, BRILLIANT, Just Brilliant. If you can catch it on IMAX, its well worth it! WOW! Did I enjoy it!
  10. Courtesy of Pravin himself:
  11. Nope, unbeknownst (actually spelt that right) to us Eskom now has 8 Loadshedding stages. So we're still pretty far from a Blackout situation.
  12. This is how Independant Power Producers (IPP) start. Connect with neighboring businesses, each one puts in an investment for renewables - over time the investment pays for itself. If your grid is big enough you might even be able to "sell" electricity back to the grid or surrounding areas.
  13. That ever reliable source of factual data.....Twitter
  14. Units that went down on Monday: Medupi 5 and 6Grootvlei 1 and 2Majuba 4Kriel 5Medupi 2 - Not currently supplying to the grid also tripped Duvha 3 and Lethabo 5 are on long term outage after recent explosions
  15. 440 BILLION in debt - In other words they spent 440B on something. So what exactly did they spend that money on? This Crazy! " It does not generate enough revenue to pay the interest, let alone salaries, maintenance, and fuel." https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2019-02-12-eskom-the-terrorist-attack-from-within/
  16. If you had to interview those drivers, what do you think the top 5 reasons would be for not commuting by bike to work?
  17. Glad you're ok! Yeah, the car turning across you is always a dodge situation. They always underestimate the speed that you're approaching. They seem to either have been waiting there a little and want to beat the next group of cars behind you. Or they want sneak across before the bunch of cars arrive.
  18. And I thought commuting was supposed to be the more relaxing way to get to work... Hope the ride home is a bit better Ed.
  19. LOL! How to derail a thread in three easy steps. Sorry Odi. As you were guys......
  20. Ok, I'll be that guy. How the heck do you embed gifs in a rreply?!? That's awesome.
  21. Certainly the solution to pollution needs to be approached on many fronts, many pieces to a puzzle, so to speak. And as you rightly say we need a focused and targeted strategy - we are all building the same puzzle. Framing one of the pieces of the puzzle as an animal rights/animal ethics problem, distracts from the original puzzle we are building. So yes I agree. If we are saying we are solving a human caused pollution problem and science and research supports that we can positively affect the pollution problem by moving to a majority (or even complete) plant based diet, then that's how we should frame the issue. An externality of the solution will be that less animals suffer and die. Perhaps that puzzle we solved forms part of a bigger picture....
  22. I gotta agree with you there. As Veganuary or "Reductionary" rolls to an end. There was definitely a marked saving in the food bill. We didn't stretch ourselves in terms of the more exotic nuts, grains, etc. Everything was kept pretty simple - Alot of: Rice, Broccoli, Cauliflower, beans, garlic, onions, Avo (for days), Sweet Potato + all the fresh salad stuff. I can Honestly say I'm not missing the meat/chicken (which is weird and my wife can't believe it). But I'm sold - so onward and upward. Areas I'm failing if you're a purist - Dairy. Still do the yoghurt with fruit in the morning. Still have cheese on my sarmies. Still have milk in my coffee. Guess we can't all be perfect.
  23. Coolest kid on the block! That bike rocks!
  24. You're gonna be flying up those hills when you're back on the bike! Hang in there!
