  1. Cool thanks for that reply. That's why I also thought, but then started reading different methodologies. Just a note, his weight with that stage/calculation was about 69kg, but you can see he did other calucations for scenarios of +1 and +2kg. These pros can easily drop a few kgs before a tour. Just look at Froome! I guess that if you do the calculations like in the example, you can leave out the bike, because it would be almost the same for everyone seeing as most will be at the 6,8kg minimum bike weight or not far from that. Or the lesson, at least be consistent when you do "pseudo analysis"
  2. I have had this same question a while ago, and it seems most calculations for the pros exclude the bike and other weights. Here is an example of Audrey Amador calculation by @ammattipyoraily. Audray weighs around 70kg.
  3. So... who won the elites ?![emoji14]
  4. Near Éguilles, in the south of France. Can't wait for the summer
  5. And this is where Logan (his nickname) roamed last weekend.
  6. Throwing a skinny giant in the mix... my new baby
  7. Thanks Rasta! Two things, I don't have a power meter yet so I'm thinking of doing a 30 min. heartrate threshold test. Then, I found this nice route, but the nice stretch is coming back and with a slight drag (darker colour). Overall it's a 1% gradient, but there are place going to 3 or 4%, but I guess it should be fine?
  8. New bike and first ride in a year and a half yesterday, so things are looking good I only have hr, but I want to try my first 30 min. hr threshold test this coming saturday to see how **** I have become. I'm probably going to try to ride hard like when I had form and then blow up before the real 20 min. test ever starts
  9. Firstly, how are you doing? All good or a bit shaken and stirred? All the best! And yes, I understand the coaching aspect, but was just wondering how accurate the test is compared to actual race values.
  10. Out of interest, have you guys ever checked how the test FTP value compares to your best 20 min. or 60 min. segment in an actual race or very hard training ride? Is it in line? For example, if your 20 min. test is 200w you take 95% of that, thus your tested FTP is 190w (theoretical max. FTP for one hour). But in a race, around the time of the test, you could do a max. 20 min. of 220w, but for 60 min. the max. was only 170w. I'm using the definition from http://help.trainingpeaks.com/hc/en-us/articles/204071934-How-to-Calculate-Threshold-Power-Heart-Rate-or-Pace which states " Functional Threshold Power (FTP): Your Functional Threshold Power is by definition the Normalized Power for an all out effort of 60 minutes. However, you can get a fairly accurate estimate of your FTP by doing an all out effort of 20 minutes, then subtracting 5% from the average power value for that interval."
  11. As a non-member I can perhaps look at it more objectively. - Discovery/vitality is a business, thus they want to keep making their 20% (or whatever) return - They found a "moral*" advantage in that they have this vitality thing which encourages people to exercise, and are willing to pay for it, because it will reduce their costs later (saw something about 7% less hospitalizations for fit people, but don't quote me on that**) - They seem to have made some miscalculations (which in any case is just a forecast, because their costs in 20 years for fit people might decrease more than they think) - They have to rectify the miscalculation (same for if shoprite misadvertises a price they might keep that price for past purchases, but will change price for the future) - There are always the 5% (you can use 10% or 1%, but same principle) that messes it up for everyone else, the cheaters! *Moral in inverted commas, because they are getting people to exercise more - great!! - but they are not doing in out of love, but out of a profit motive. It's a cynical stance by me, but they have not shown me otherwise. Good philosophical debate! **In communication sent to members, Discovery says its research shows that one additional workout per week reduces the risk of hospitalisation by 7% http://www.moneyweb.co.za/news/companies-and-deals/vitality-active-rewards-or-punishment/
  12. Max. heart rate calculated by 220 minus age works for the average, but the range is just too big for any practical use. Chris Froome will probably not get any points with the new system. Imagine that.
  13. I don't own a business, but I can't understand the logic behind this? You have a company that has been a cash cow for a long time, and I guess you are used to the returns, but you are facing stiff competition from various sources - what do you do? You increase the prices above inflation of course!! Can somebody explain this to me? Big hike in DStv prices announced http://www.moneyweb.co.za/news/companies-and-deals/big-hike-in-dstv-prices-announced/
  14. I get you spider! Laws are not only for safety, but also to control the movement/regulate flow. Think of it like this, any breaking of traffic laws is deliberately cheating your way to get ahead of someone else!
  15. Honestly, he's actually a nice guy so he would probably smile and wave. I hope you have the same attitude to all your friends breaking any laws, by-laws and traffic rules
  16. Perhaps this helps (from page 7) http://www.uci.ch/mm/Document/News/NewsGeneral/16/81/62/2015-02-Rio2016-QualificationSystem-FINAL-RoadCycling-EN_English.pdf Not sure I understand completely, but it looks to be first the normal rankings and then a special place available depending on the continental championship results. I guess the final team classification? "An NOC can earn maximum one (1) quota place through the ranking by nation from the Continental Championships. If an NOC that has already qualified through the UCI Ranking by Nation of 31 May 2016 is the top ranked NOC of the respective continental championship, the next best ranked NOC in the ranking by nation of the respective continental championships will be allocated the quota place"
  17. Cool, thanks. I guess the combo is the way to go http://www.aeropress.com/product-category/all-in-combos/ because then you also get the grinder.
  18. Thanks nerd I will check it out
  19. Ok please don't kill me, but I just can't read the whole thread now. Quick question - is there a good small coffee machine available that gives you the option to change quickly between caffeine or decaf? Not nespresso or something like that, but with beans.
  20. I'm not against with what you say and I agree that the selection process could be more transparent. I have two thoughts/questions... - The age thing actually has no relevance, because if you are best you are best; but there is always the big question, should you take young inexperienced riders for them to gain experience or send experienced riders to get results? And remember, they are competing in Morocco to get an extra spot to the olympic games in Rio. - What would your team of four look like? Current: An-Li Kachelhoffer, Lise Olivier, Anriette Schoeman, Samantha Sanders; You want Heidi Dalton, Carla Oberholzer and Charlene du Preez in the place of? I'm sure every person will choose a different four woman team. But yes, they should be more transparent, but I'm sure the woman know what the selection criteria is? The thing is, can we really complain about that team? Looks pretty strong to me.
  21. Normally I think yes. tbsp., Tbsp. or T. tablespoon tsp. or t. teaspoon
  22. See rule number 9 http://www.velominati.com/the-rules/ Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.Fair-weather riding is a luxury reserved for Sunday afternoons and wide boulevards. Those who ride in foul weather – be it cold, wet, or inordinately hot – are members of a special club of riders who, on the morning of a big ride, pull back the curtain to check the weather and, upon seeing rain falling from the skies, allow a wry smile to spread across their face. This is a rider who loves the work.
