  1. I can also vouch for Diald Bikes - they've got some nice stuff and are happy to answer any questions you might have. Also - for things like 661 knee guards, and with helmet, there are size charts and measurements that can help you figure out your sizing
  2. They may be tougher than one would think, but Crow makes an excellent point: Currently I am running 610g rims at 31.7mm wide. Heavy and wide. But I don't doubt for a second what they can handle - nothing beats riding with confidence... The Nukeproof's rim's claimed weight is 570g at 29mm wide... a little lighter... The Flows are 470g per rim and 28mm wide... Even if they ARE tough enough, I am sure I'll start worrying....
  3. O yeah and watch the Fabien Barel video - check his body position - weight on the outside pedal, inside pedal up, body nice and loose, etc - line choice, and proper weight distribution will go far to aid in taking switchbacks safely and easily.
  4. I am no expert, but I don't touch my front brakes IN a corner - no matter how steep / tight it is. I TRY get my braking done before the corner (using front and back) and then use the back in the corner if I need to... my reasoning? If the back locks, it's going to drag a bit - no biggy - in the corner I am focussed on planting the front and guiding it through... however if I lock the front, it's going to ignore my inputs and try to "sit up", so I'm either going to lose my line or end up in the bushes... for this reason I leave the front altogether once I've started turning. Like I said, I'm no expert, but since I've been riding motorcycles for a few years this is what's natural to me. Your front has lots of stopping power, but I don't like using it unless I'm going in a fairly straight line...
  5. Spike's a little overkill for my application methinks...
  6. Hmmm, yellow could be interesting...

  8. The I9 hubs / Flow rims? so you happy with the Flow rims? Tough enuff for hard trail riding?
  9. Pittstop did you go ahead and order yours? Arrived yet?
  10. Well the Nukeproof wheelset (or Spank Subrosa on Nukeproof hubs) will set me back just under 4k. Going to ZTR or DTSwiss starts pushing it closer to the 5k mark... It's only really the rear wheel that's nearing the end of it's life. I have a 15mm, unbranded Giant hub on the front that I'm pretty happy with. Maybe I just buy a complete rear wheel, and a matching rim for the front and have the front rebuilt on the existing hub? Though I'll probably need spokes as well then :/
  11. Flow rims are a bit more pricey - can't really afford wheels as it is... trying to find the balance between strength, weight and cost. The Nukeproofs seem to be the best option at this stage. Also considered the Flows, the Spank Oozy or Subrosas (not sure the Oozy is tough enough) and the DT Swiss EX500 - all either on Nukeproof, Novatec or Hope hubs. But some of those options are out of reach, price wise
  12. a fair amount - I earn my turns the claimed weight of the rims I currently have (AlexRims SupraBH) is 610g VS the Nukeproof claimed weight of 570g - this is per rim only. I wouldn't mind a slightly lighter wheelset than what I have now, but I am surviving with my current setup.
  13. rad, thanks light enough for trail / AM use?
  14. Ah, techno green So what do you guys think of Nukeproof wheels? Worthwhile purchase?
  15. Or.....
  16. What do you guys think of Nukeproof's wheelsets / hubs / rims? I might be in the market... http://www.nukeproof.com/en/wheels-rims/generator-wheels

  20. Ok, not that I'm shopping, but damn, the Nukeproof Mega AM looks good . Does anyone else think it's good value for money, considering the parts spec? Would be a tad sweeter of a deal if a chain guide and dropper post were thrown in (like the bike pictured, which I think is the "Pro" model) Wonder how good an all-rounder it is... http://dialdbikes.co...h-rt3-2012.html You can also get the frame for R10k http://dialdbikes.co...a-am-frame.html Flip, that silver anodised scheme is 10 out of 10
  21. Trimmed off the bottom of the flanges on the grips, then applied a liberal dose of spray-on mud
  22. Look who's been getting some attention...
  23. Ok, so, we're pretty much done photo taken just before a nice muddy thrashing at Jonkers The Dartmoor Simple chain guide has been installed... awesome piece of kit, the red anodised finish is something to behold! Had LBS install it for me, there's a bit of clunkiness when back pedalling which we're trying to figure out but it's not critical. Did Canary at Jonkers which is particularly rocky and rooty, chain stayed exactly where it needed to, so the chain guide is doing its job! Also climbed with no noticeable hassles, in fact, climbing on this bike is actually going well. Made it up without using the granny ring (ok, for me that's a big deal) Deity grips are on now as well. Pretty comfy grips - they have sort of a mushroom pattern, and are kind of octagonal, rather than round. The flanges were a little in my way when shifting, but not excessively so (I've never ridden with flanged grips so might just be that I'm not used to it). Still, I might trim them where my thumb goes to shift. The 2nd Continental Mountain King II 2.4 Protection is also on now - and the front is running tubeless. The back was giving hassle (that rim has seen better days) so there's currently a tube in there, but LBS is going to rebuild the wheel for me. Still, it may be time to bin that rim. While an upgrade might be cool, the budget is sorta tapped out Tyres performed admirably - rolled fast uphill and did well over damp roots, rocks and muddy patches! The purple seat is a demo Fizik Gobi, but I don't dig it. The Zeak is going on tomorrow again, I far prefer the shape of it. To round off the "with-bits-of-red" colour scheme I chucked a red Lizard Skins chainstay protector on, and a Deity sticker (courtesy of my mates at dialdbikes.co.za) All in all I had a great ride today. A bit slow as I'm still getting back into the swing of things, but marvelling at the Commencal's geometry and its ability to just swallow terrain! I was enjoying picking creative lines, and launching off little rocks or rolling over big ones! All I want now is a dropper post (PS. we weighed it... for those who care: 15.1kg. Might go up a few grams when I swap saddles)
  24. How flipping rowdy is Gwin's first run in that Trek video!!??
