  1. Update: Cards got, application finished ------------------------- - Am looking for a new permit / need 3 people - Bergvliet based Happy to coordinate the application as I live just down the road from the Manor House / Office. -------------------------
  2. https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/186297-table-mountain-tokai-group-permit-resource/?do=findComment&comment=3688980 Started a thread for people to look for others, check the details there.
  3. I've never actually worked out if it's actually a minimum / max of 4 but everyone I've ever teamed up with has done it with 4 people. Currently applications are only be processed at Tokai Office and no Day passes are being sold from the Tokai car park office. Edit: Multi Users / Groups re 4 people per application.
  4. Link through to the Activity Card page on the SANParks Site: https://www.sanparks.org/parks/table_mountain/tourism/access-cards-permits.php Link to Activity Card Application form: https://www.sanparks.org/docs/parks_table_mountain/myactivity_permit_form.pdf Costs: The TMNP My Activity Permit is required by individuals who make use of the Park to undertake a specific/variety of activities. Level 1 – Dog-walking (R305) Level 1 - Multi User Level 1 card additional member (R115.00)Level 2 – Hang-gliding and paragliding, sport climbing (R455) Level 3 – Horse-riding, cycling, line fishing and transport (R625) Level 3 - Additional member (R270.00)
  5. Thought it might be a useful thread to start to get people together who want to purchase group permits / Activity Cards Level 3 for TMNP. Post if you're looking and please update if you've got / not interested any longer. For logistics sake it might be an idea to give a rough area where you stay and if you have another people who are looking or how many people you are looking for to complete an application.
  6. That's pretty good then as his off-the-peg frames are from R15K and his customs are from R20K on their own. Would be a great 40th birthday gift or an anniversary. We bought a friend a electric guitar making course with a custom builder. He did it over quite a few sessions, made the body, made the neck, created the frets, inlays, pickup and all the way through to the polishing and finishing. Even worked the leather strap. The passion and pure stoke he had when he first played it out was incredible.
  7. We need 4 people. I'll actually start a Permit thread (unless there is one) and hopefully people who need can make contacts there for group purchases. I'll send you a DM with links to the online form. It needs to be printed out and you can post it over to me or we can meet up. You need 2 photos as well.
  8. I’m looking to renew my permit for Tokai. If you are the maybe we should find a couple more people and make a plan.
  9. Shame. He will be missed. Condolences to the family.
  10. Now that would be pretty special. Not too sure I’d 100% believe in something I’d made myself for the first time as I fired down status quo.
  11. I’ve done the numbers with those guys and as much as I’d love to go that route, keeping it local and the rest ends up with it being cheaper to go over seas. Even for the same frames you can buy from the likes of kona etc let alone the likes of Mercer and the rest. Sure I’d love to give him my madibas but I’m not able to pay 1/3 more just because. Even a custom Ti frame from EU comes in around the same randelas as a local steely custom. An off the peg Uk vs local builder off the peg is significant.
  12. Question for people to ponder. For WC trails what frame out of these would you go for: - Cotic Solaris Max 2020 - Cotic BFe Max 2020 - Ribble 725 - One One Hello Dave - Moxie Pipe Dream - Cromag Root Down 2020 - Nordest Bardino 2 - Ragley Big Wig - Cromag Doctahawk - Pace Rc529 - Transition Throttle (not made any more but but should be able to find a run out or 2nd hand. Only carbon on the list. It is a 27.5 and that could be an issue) - Edit: How could If forget. Banshee Paradox. This would be front and centre but it's as rare as rocking horse doodoo. Outside contenders: - Kingdom Vendetta Ti (only on the alternate as it's double the rest of others but a steal in the world of Ti hard tails) - Stanton Switch9er (is an older model that is due for an update in next 6 month) - Kona Honzo (alternate as it's expensive and needs an update which is coming soon apparently) - Meta AM (alternate as I've ridden is before and found ot pretty harsh and twitchy when going fast) - Nukeproof Scout (only on the alternate as it's Alu. If CRC have them on sale it's back up the list) - Bird Zero (alu but cheeks and fun) - Cutis AM7 Custom (alternate because it's nearly the price of a Vendetta, it's 650b and double most frames on the list)
  13. The comments for this one are interesting. The Rootdown never really features in reviews but is heavily loved by the public some other good options thrown up by the public as well as what's in the article.
  14. Sure everyone as spotted this Large Gen1 Solaris Max in the classifieds. https://bikehub.co.za/classifieds/item/hardtail-mountain-bike-frames/416585/cotic-frame Legacy page for the frame & geo is here: https://www.cotic.co.uk/product/solarisMAX1#sizing
  15. Isn't that what Namola does on some level? Panic, messaging, tracking, locate, assistance, medical and armed response, communication all on a stand alone device-pod-keyring thing. https://www.namola.com/namola-plus Obviously it's more angled to the personal use rather than a item to drop down a seat post or hide under a saddle. Issue I see in having the personal alarm / personal tracking and a device that is so small as to be able to be hidden and not found on a bike is that they're 2 different purposes. Really one would be as small and tiny as possible and not be found and just track the other is a personal device. If as a joint unit it's so small it can't be found on a bike then I am going to lose it for sure before walking out the door when looking to use it in it's personal alarm guise and any buttons would need a needle to operate. Also I'm not sure that I'd be pulling up my dropper to pop a tracker down my seat post before every ride and then trying to get it out after. Rather I'd love 2 options bundled in one system. 1 like the Namola type device to have with me and can be passed about around the family and nanny etc and then a track tag that can stay in / on my bikes 24/7 and be activated via an app or is constantly running (though my wife might realise how much time I spend at the cafe post ride) and they all work off the same service.
  16. I thought the rules were pretty simple. Have a card, extend your current card or get a new card. No day passes. Anyone not doing that is being a chop. Okes turning around when they see a ranger know the rules. Abusing the staff who are there is a Dick move. Sure it could be easier to get into Tokai with snap scan and day passes being open but it's not and to get in is very simple.
  17. No offence I did see your huge pack hammering down past Tokai Forest with no coverings, spread pretty wide on the road and no social distancing / max no in groups in what looked to be 25+ Savages. Unfortunately I know it's not a 'only you' thing and loads of people are riding unmasked because they can but you guys do stick out in the community due to your branding and are far more noticeable. I guess with that comes some added responsibility.
  18. Found him. Returned the wallet. Unfortunately I called one of the banks and asked that they could contact him. They said they would contact him. They asked for the card name / number. Cancelled the card and said they would call him to say his card had been cancelled but couldn’t pass on my details for him to come get the rest. Felt a bit bad about that but managed to get everything else back via a different contact.
  19. Because I found his wallet in Tokai this morning with cards, ID and drivers. Message me if you know the guy and I can get it back to him.
  20. It’s the repetitive element and the mental battle that is actually the worst. I was being facetious with my previous comment as there is a lot that goes into a serious attempt. Hill choice and trade offs for your descended time are also pretty critical (also asMorton found out a hill and a segment that is actually true). My attempt at it was eye bleedingly torturously bad. Everything from hill choice, fueling, pacing, clothing, equipment, equipment weight start time and the rest effected the out come. For me my ‘attempt’ was a personal thing so most if it was managing the mental side. The balance of boredom vs the need to be on a strategy for all of those hours. Knowing the terrain of your hill is also critical. Not critical as I’ll ever be close but critical for knowing how and when you can push. The time that contador took was massive but as I said before there is vey little regulation in that part of the sport and it’s open for abuse the more it’s attempted. There is a lot you can do to strip weight while training (fair and not) on a physical level it is a watts per kg trade. The mental side is another matter.
  21. What learnt about the ass-gai was rolling resistance is a really, real thing and that tbing for a mere mortal is a handbreak with weight. No, I’m not chasing koms, yes I value traction over max speed but even though I don’t need to feel like I have to pedal down hill especially when there are good tyres that weigh less, stick well and roll faster. If I was going full gnar in epic dh conditions they yes, yes, yes. But I don’t I live and ride in the western cape who is no where near as roff as the places the mags test & review this gear.
  22. It’s a mooooooooo-t point as everesting isn’t checked by any doping controls or wada over sight. Train hard, drop kgs and get that watts / kg to max effect. Then ride.
  23. I borrowed a mates one and took it for a session at Hoogekraal the other day. It was a Canyon all carbon thing and was great fun on those trails. Dealt well with Cobra and the rest and surprisingly didn't get too over whelmed doing the enduro line, Die Kloof at Contermanskloof. I've ridden a couple before and usually they are let down by flea frames, noodle rims and dodgy brakes and can't deal with anything more than gravel tracks. This one was actually a sessionable bike. I wouldn't go buy one new but if I saw one pop up on gumtree or at a bargain on the ads here I'd seriously think about it. Just like any 'different bike' it makes you think about your riding in another way, lets you find new lines on old trails and different skills to work on.
  24. Quite a few good riders out of contract this year that could build nicely around Froome. Let's if see ISUN and MR Adams open up their wallets. https://www.cyclingnews.com/features/10-transfer-targets-to-help-chris-froome-win-the-2021-tour-de-france/ Maybe the Porte as GC rider experiment will come to an end now and he can hook back up with Froome. TBH though I can't see Froome winning the Tour again.
  25. Good article. https://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2020/jul/09/why-chris-froome-and-team-ineos-parting-of-the-ways-cycling
