  1. I'm thinking of either trying my hand at home-made "lazer etching" (which in all likelihood would involve me covering the relevant parts with a thin metal layer (aluminium can etc) - with the cutouts in place - and then taking some very, very rough sandpaper to the exposed parts.... OR - going for a bit of airspray loving... PM'ed a Hubber to hear if he's happy with his paintwork sticking to titanium...

It really blows knowing this is sitting at home, and I haven't been able to hit the trails with it yet... Managed a ride up and down the yard last night, in plakkies, without falling into the pool. But it's kinda not the same... Unfortunately, despite a service of them last year - the back wheel has picked up a wobble/but of play, apparently due to the bearings now needing to be replaced... Here's hoping they can still be sourced locally, or it's going to turn into another few months of effort...
  3. I finally have my frame, after having built up the new softail... Need to spend some time with a bit of light sanding - she needs some TLC... When the Singlespeed.co.za boys get back to me with their stock of Blackspire chainrings - I'll be in business... Here be the frame - very old-skool! This shot sort of shows the ovalisation of the toptube as it meets the seatpost... The same is done down below, where the seattube meets the BB... The headtube is ridiculously long... Took off an inch of steerer when we fitted its fork to the new frame... Here be close-ups of Sandvik's 'window treatment' to the dropouts... When people told me I needed to upgrade my brakes, I used to respond I had already upgraded from canti's... Will pop up some pics after I've cleaned the frame... Not the lightest - weighs in at 1,550kg's - but a decent place to start, I guess!

Ja so look... I got a little bit impatient... Time being such a scarce commodity of late - my initial plans to slowly bring her back to life, via a pictorial, took a backseat... What do my fellow Hubbers think? Not too bad for an old frame that was lying forgotten in the corner of a LBS? Yes/no? Weight comes in at 11,740kgs - which is not great, but not too shabby either... So to cut an already long story short - I'll shut up now, and pop up the pics... The frame in front is soon to be converted to an old-skool SS... It just needs a bit of TLC..
  5. Thanks TW - sorting out some naaice blue bolts through the Singleseed chaps!
  6. Reasonable enough to see me going with them, rather than CRC! Just hope they get stock in soon!
  7. What - you're a mind reader now as well? See below...
  8. Thanks Whistler - just had a bit of email banter with Jerrard over at Singlespeed.co.za... He has advised that I look at replacing the middle ring, since replacing the outside/big ring will move my chain alignment slightly off - which can put undue stress on the hub (as in my rear wheel, not this Hub )... Considering that I am a big boy - and my wheels are, shall we say, old-skool - I'd rather not take any chances... They will be getting back to me on the Blackspire Mono Veloce Singlespeed 7075 blade (they waiting for more stock), and then I can proceed... Building this bloody SS has just about been a 9 month labour of love in itself... Been fun!
  9. Hey Gareth... Welcome to the Hub... If possible, try and save a bit more - you won't regret it. Whereas I'm not trying to dis Avalanche bikes - it's simply not one of the recognised MTB brands... Spend a little bit of time here on the Hub, and you will quickly start picking up the stalwart brands... Mongoose, Silverback, GT, Raleigh (and several others that will no doubt be suggested by Hubbers) are the more established brands, with a long history behind them. Entry level bikes in these brands will only set you back a extra few thousand Rands (if that much), but will be a much better purchase... If you'll excuse the terrible and inaccurate analogy - rather get an entry level Toyota, Golf, Nissan, Mazda etc. than a Tata or GWM (nothing against the latter ), but hope you know what I mean... If you're simply looking at getting a foot in the door - then you don't need to break the bank, but a bit more research and patience (and saving up) will make a huge difference... If possible, go and check out some of the bigger LBS's - the one you've been at might have a reputation for being a bit cheaper - but the bigger stores can often get better prices on the entry-levels, simply because they sell more - and will have a larger variety on display. Window shopping costs nothing - as does surfing the Hub! Good luck - and don't be shy to pop up some more options as you find them!
  10. My limited knowledge on this, gleaned from scouring the net this evening in my attempts to sort out a SS crankset - suggests the following: The BCD of different cranks can be variable - but 104mm appears to be quite a common standard amongst most of the Shimano cranks... Not sure about RF though... I would reason you hit CRC or the actual RaceFace website, and get technical info for your Atlas cranks - you should be able to confirm what the BCD is for them. With this - you can then check out the various chainring options that you're considering - they should also list their BCD in the spec section... I presume if the bolt-number and BCD for your crank and chainrings match - then they should work...
  11. Thanks Steve, will drop them a line!
  12. Riverdance Academy of Dance huh? Yep - 'dem lads and lasses sure know how to spin...
  13. Thanks Mojo - the spacer idea is appealing, but will go that route when I have more time... I presume that fitting a ring inside or outside will be determined by what type or size of SS-specific blade I purchase? Think I'll have a look on CRC, and then pop up a few options that I'm looking at, before placing the order...
  14. Whistler - that's it! This will make the most sense - and be the simplest! It never occurred to me that I could simply replace the big blade, and lose the rest... What ring is that?
  15. Many thanks Whistler - will really appreciate that! Good to know - will mention it to the LBS should I need to!
  16. Hey Nick - for now I'll just remove the inner and outer blades - and run with the LX. I can understand the benefits of going SS specific on the ring - and since I'm a big boy - will no doubt be doing this sooner rather than later... Should also allow me to run a thicker (BMX?) chain, no?
  17. Oooohhh. And how did you do this? Any chance of some pics?
  18. I know, I know - you'd be forgiven for thinking I was building a friggin' gauno-powered Enterprise or something, instead of a SS, with the amount of time I've been faffing around! [in my defence - with the arrival of the little one a month ago - time has been rather scarce!] I will pop up pics of the frame in the week - she's going to see some TLC first! Back to the question: Will keep the bashgaurd option in mind - get what you mean now with regards to it 'replacing' the big blade... Will see what else I the Hub can come up with - appears to be some good options so far!
  19. Thanks Steve! Yes - I'm relieved to see all is not lost with me - I was thinking about that as an option... Did you simply take a hacksaw (etc.) to it? Am I correct in that the black parts on the tips is what simply remains of the big blade - and the middle blade still locks in from behind?
  20. Hey Drongo... Thanks! So the recess remains (where the big blade used to connect) - and then simply leave the middle blade as is (and remove the inner)? The middle will still sit fine in the absence of the big blade? And why the bashgaurd? For aesthetic purposes only (in light of my particular crankset), or for the protection etc? The Raceface will fit the Shimano, yes?
  21. Hey Grebel - RaceFace is closing up shop, no? Nah - didn't want to invest in a SS-specific chainset until I was sure the bug had bitten properly, which is why I bought the LX set in the pic above - for only slightly more than 300 Souf Efrican ronts... Figured it could remain a back-up to my other crankset if the SS didn't grab me. Now I'm wondering whether it would be at all possible to convert it to one blade, and still have it look half-decent?
  22. Thanks for all the info Hubbers! But thought I'd revive this now, since the build is imminent! The LX cranks I bought, have been lying in a box, unopened until the past weekend. On taking them out - I had one of those "hmmmm" moments... Read through all of the above again - but cannot get my head around this - can the crank be successfully converted to a SS setup? In the pic below - I've only noticed now how the 'spindle-arms' [what would the correct term be?] - unlike in the XTR range, don't continue up to the outer blade... The big blade bolts into the recess on top, and the middle blade bolts in from the back - but all of it being 'next to' the spindle arm, if that makes sense... Surely if the big blade is removed from the picture, it will leave a very-visible recess where it was clamping in to... More importantly, I'm wondering whether removing the big blade won't reduce the structural integrity of where the middle blade clamps in to...? Wait - I've just looked at the pic closely again - I actually cannot see how this could be done? I will have to go and look properly tonight again... Your thoughts will obviously be appreciated...
  23. Btw - why you running your chain so long?
  24. Unadulterated porn! Love the saddle - what bar you got on?
