I'm no metalurgist either - and we're bound to joined by contrary views [ ], but suitability vs cost vs weight of Ti as a frame material aside, some say that Ti is imminently suited for a softail, due to its inherent flexability... [Flame suit on]

The rear shock arrived yesterday... spent a rather sleepless night, thinking it won't fit. Turns out my idea of "finessing", and a LBS mechie's idea of "finessing", are (thankfully) two different things... Fits like a glove - now just to arrange the seatpost and headset - and she will live again! 1,81kg as it stands...
  4. Gecko Cycles, CapeGate Cornerstone Cycles, Paarl
  5. MBCT - I've only noticed now that you're running yours mullet style! Your front rim appears to be a v-brake, but obviously with disc hubs? What hubs/rims are you running - and did you build it like that from the start, or make some adjustments later? Ps - she's a beaut!
  6. As you know - this thread is useless without pics!
  7. Hmmm - and so the plot thickens. Based on where you purchased it - and judging my Mampara's pics - I think it's safe to assume(?) that your particular model came out like that - so let's put that one to bed. Pop up some more pics - not just close-ups of the damage, but side angles of the bottom tube area - including the headset and toptube join, prefereably with some reference items (either a ruler or a matchbox!) for scale purposes... I'm pretty sure that it will spark some interesting contributions from the resident Hub engineers etc. etc.
  8. I've had my eye on a Sewanee before - and have never come across that "dent"-design as indicated here, on any of the models I was looking at... Which is not to say that wasn't the case in this model, but I'm now very curious as to what year model this one is?? Where did you buy this frame - direct from Litespeed or 2nd hand/via a Ebay? Photos as requested would certainly help...
  9. New rear shock for the Softail will be landing on Tuesday - going to try and get it built over the course of the week, but things are a bit hectic at the moment [ ], so looks like it it might take a week or two extra... Think the easiest will be to simply take both frames in to the LBS, and have the XT crank switched, and the new LX installed. I don't have a crank-puller, so this is pretty much all I'll need major help with... Still have to order the seatpost via CRC - but that shouldn't take too long - depending on budget constraints, might then just take the plunge on the King headset... Still pondering on the wheels though... I'll use my existing wheels on the new frame, and will dust off the cobwebs on the old Parallax set... BUT - really don't feel like having to fix punctures again (once you've gone to tubeless...) - so will have to start getting up to speed on whether a Ghetto conversion will be able to work on something so old?? As excited as I am - I'm starting to experience a slightly-perverse desire to drag this out a bit: Been planning this for so long now, that I've almost enjoying the anticipation more than the end-result... I know, I know - I'll probably PM you to meet me somewhere in Stellies, and have you slap me around the head a bit, need to stop talking and build her!!! I'm hoping it works for me - I'll be honest in stating I bought them simply because I thought they looked cool - although I'll be the first to acknowledge that my idea of 'hip' is most likely everyone else's square!
  10. No silly - I'm building the seatpost only (since I have two months)... Ja - I've thought about it. But I'm stuck when it comes to taking the crankset/BB across. I can do all the rest. Granted - I've done zero research, so if it's easy-peesy, will do it myself, but will skip for now it requires tools I don't have...... Unless.... Unless - I put up an advert on the Hub - for a fellow Hubber with the required toolkit - reckon a bribe of several beers and a braai should get them out of the woodwork - and we can do a local drinking home-bike-build drinking session... OMF. Genius!
  11. Hello! Taking off my moderators cap - and popping on a legal one - this is definitely not the best place to do something like this. Several MASSIVE warning signals are flickering all over what's been alleged here. And most of the time, going the public route in an attempt to 'massage' a solution, almost always backfires. I don't know you from a bar of soap - so I could just as easily have ignored this (as you no doubt will request me to), but I really am being sincere in my advice - if this escalates, you're going to need a lawyer who doesn't shy away from a fight. There must be a simpler, not-to-mention, cleaner way of getting this sorted? Putting my moderators cap back on - PM us if you reconsider your approach here, and it will disappear. Happy Hubbing.
  12. Aww what the hell - let's poor some petrol on this here flammage... I was determined to go local - need a new seatpost, 27.2mm. Thomson Elite inline. Only I want a silver one - not a black one. The first young-un at a LBS informed me you don't get silver ones. I considered referring him to my recent post, where I sold my old silver Thomson, but decided against it. He was as keen to help me as what I presume Steve the Hof is to go and watch U2. Didn't even bother to offer calling the suppliers. [As an aside - CWC also appears to only stock black ones] The 2nd LBS also said he only knew of black ones, but would pick up the phone and contact the supplier. As described by Drongo, "yes, yes, yes, I see, when?, WHEN? I see, Thank you". Yes - they can get a silver one, but they will need to order it. But just for me. A "special" order - for me - special. I ask - "how long"? He says - wait for it - two months. TWO MONTHS! I could probably make my own seatpost in TWO MONTHS. Now - don't get me wrong. The 1st LBS irritated me, and is why I'm using them less and less. The 2nd LBS did what he was supposed to - I have no beef with him, none whatsoever - he even rolled his eyes and said it's madness - that I may as well order through CRC. And of course that's exactly what I'm going to do. My bike will be re-built at the 2nd LBS - but let's get one thing clear, it's not the LBS's that are the problem, it's the suppliers. They hide behind the LBS, and screw us all over. They're obviously not concerned with how things are going - so until the LBS's start making a noise (or, like CWC start going direct), it's going to remain unchaged.... We suffer - the LBS suffers - the Suppliers presumably don't. Madness. My 2 cents.
  13. SteveCT already said what I was thinking - if it was a singlespeed, I would think twice about judging the dude on his appearance.... Torn pants and plakkies sounds about right? [Exits - closes door behind him]!
  14. Dude... "FML" pretty much sums that up! Good luck buddy! As for the french/english translation - get one of those tourist-like phrase books - and speak Afrikaans first - they really don't like the Ainglaise!
  15. Apologies in advance for stirring the pot.... But can't help wondering if her's was a flat bar or riser? Since if it was the latter - then presumably she didn't have bar-ends on... Which might have saved her from such a freakish accident... Put that in the "do bar-ends help" pipe and smoke it!
  16. For what it's worth - this has been posted off a BB Curve, with no problems.
  17. Apologies - that's what I meant to say... Multi-release cleats off CRC, here be the link You're still happily connected to the bike, most importantly on the uphills and when you're bombing downhill - but it remains much easier to unclip. Regarding Egg-beaters - nothing wrong with them, I had a pair myself for a good couple of years. You only have two settings though, depending on which way around you install your cleats on your shoes - which regulates the 'float-range' permissible before unclipping... If you get used to cleats - then it comes down to personal preferences. However, keep in mind that unlike with SPD's, there are no tensioners to adjust on egg-beaters - so you cannot play around with loosening or tightening the release action. This being said, as indicated - once you adjust to riding with cleats, this becomes less of an issue! As many have suggested here - give it some time to get used to them, to the point where it becomes second nature to unclip, and then make your decision. Happy riding!
  18. Looking good - keep them coming!
  19. You could consider ordering Shimano multi-release pedals off CRC. They are easier to unclip, and are often used by the dirt-jump brigade, which requires an easier opt-out, more often than not mid-air... They also take some getting used to, since it's almost to easy to unclip initially - but really does make dabbing on the ST very simple... Will pop up more details later when I get in front of the pc...
  20. Was this the 29" that snapped?
  21. RodTi

    Please?

    No. Uhm, ok... Maybe?
  22. Thanks Frosty, That's way more useful than what I managed to find... Unfortunately, I am woefully short of tools - and whereas purchasing some of those will no doubt stand me in good stead going forward, I'm reluctant to spend money on this, particularly after having now taken the plunge on the other fork... Think I'll put it up for "sale" on the Hub, for a pack of smarties, and buyer to cover postage costs... Pretty sure someone out there might have use for it - failing which, it will be donated to a LBS that might help a brother out...
  23. Holy moses. Scratch my earlier post - this Hubber is mad!
  24. The mean you actually told your wives/partners/state authority the name of the site? Are you mad!?? Talk about painting a giant target on the side of a barn/your foreheads!
  25. Thanks for your concern, Redsox I was aware of the label - mine still has it on. I take it with a pinch of salt. Probably intended for consumption in the US. Fact is, this fork ain't all that different to the first ones that came out not so many moons ago - and then they were being used by nutters doing downhill - since some suspension was better than no suspension... With this being said - this was only ever going to be used on my SS, mainly for tar riding, until I decided whether to go rigid, or upgrade. As it stands - I've apparently made my decision - since I just took the plunge on an old-skool Fox F80RL, that still appears to be mint, and can handle my v-brakes... I was considering giving this one away on the Hub - but thanks to you, I'm wondering if anyone might still take it? Maybe they are some souls out there who are willing to 'live on the edge'? Alternatively, might approach a LBS suggested by Mr. Brunson, who apparently helps out the not-so-fortunate in getting bikes put together - maybe one of those guys will have what it takes to ignore a sticker.
