  1. I recall that after the stormy Argus 2009 they also took so long to manipulate the Argus data to work out the seeding cause the times did not quite fit their model due to the extreme weather. I think they must be having lots of "discrepancies" with the current Argus seedings they getting vs seedings people got for other events this year. Unlike our matric results where your mark generally would be moderated upwards PPA works hard to mark you down. I am not holding my breath to get a good seeding.
  2. I wrote this in jest but there maybe something in it. I reckon the Argus gave a better reflection of where people are at. It must be causing big problems for the way they want seeding to be.
  3. To think you paid R180 for the race entry and they to cheap to even hire Racetec. You can say what you want about racetec but they get the results up quickly.
  4. I think 35K is totally insane for an Epic entry. How does he justify increasing the price year on year like this since he also gets heavily sponsored for this Boland camping trip. Logistical costs my foot.Surely the ordinary guy is sponsoring the elite guys. Since I have not done the epic maybe u guys can help with this question. Has the Epic become nothing more than an event on the middle aged corporate exec tick list of things to do? Also lets not forget to improve the profile of sport has-beens?
  5. Did any of you Get this email from PPA? I always though the seeding process was F...up but this is just wrong! From: Pedal Power Association [mailto:newsletter@pedalpower.org.za] Sent:31 March 2011 22:47 PM To: oterymed@telkomsa.net Subject: Ref PPA#5119: PPA Seeding news: 31 March 2011 Dear Feizal We have done a preliminary seeding run and will be finalizing the seedings by the 6th april 2011. You should receive your new number by the 1st May 2011. Please ensure your membership fees are paid in order to receive your new seeded number. http://www.pedalpower.org.za/myppa/register Our statistician has worked tirelessly on the results especially of the Argus 2011 to regress the data to fit our new model, despite his best attempts we don’t think we have got it 100% correct. The executive committee have therefore decided to allocate spaces in each seeded group to PPA members of ten year good standing who may feel aggrieved by their new seeding. We also think that this is a wonderful new avenue to generate much needed funds. Your current Seeding Index is 31.70863 which makes you eligible for J. Your new Seeding Index is 35.01754 which makes you eligible for K. We would like to offer you the following possible upgrades to your seeding and the fee. We had successfully piloted this at the Argus 2011 and we were overwhelmed by the positive response and high take up of the offer. Upgrades Available Group Cost J R500 I R750 H R1000 G R1500 F R1750 E R2200 As all of this is confidential, we have set up an email address only for this purposes. invitedseedingupgrades@pedalpower.org.za On your acceptance of the offer we will send you further payment instructions which will be on a cash only basis. 6. For whatever reason someone did him favour. I have seen guys before who were seeded in groups too fast for them and they dead by chappies and worse off than if they started later. you still went faster than him anyway. He could also have just gotten a friends start card and was never seeded there. I think that if they used this years argus as a basis to calculate seeding for the past few months races they will get different results. Although lots of guys rode good times I think that more guys rode faster times in 2008 than this year so it may not be so bad for seeding.
  7. Since you know the guy did you ask before emailing PPA?
  8. The crash happened in the dip just before chappies started. We were going along in quite a big bunch. Everyone was probably trying to eke out every last bit of momentum before the climb. I was sitting midpack to the left of centre. The bunch was moving over to pass some E riders on the left when the crash happened.Simultaneously there was a group of G riders who were pushing hard on the right to come pass our bunch. This almost funneling effect of the bunch I reckon cause the crash. It was scary to watch the guys falling down like dominoes towards you. Next moment I go down and the guy behind goes over me and lands on top of me. luckily I am just a bit bruised. It took a few minutes to get my bike adjusted again. i was shaken on the descent off Chappies and was on my brakes all way down. My one mates carbon frame along with his helmet and wheel is busted.
  9. Just wanted to know what you guys will be doing to keep fit now that the season is practically over. I dont want to pick up the 5kg, I worked so hard to lose, in three months like last year. I will be dusting off my mtb as well.
  10. results are up.
  11. Wear red and play the chasing G-bulls like a matador.
  12. Imagine what extra cost the CTICC will add to the Argus entry fee. Can u imagine all the 30 page post we would have bemoaning the cost of the entry?
  13. I just had some eggs, sausage and toast. probably wont help me for sunday. but i sure feel good
  14. Is dragons not also the agent for Mavic? Who brings in their own Mavic wheels? CWC.
  15. while the DA hubs can handle racing and training in a twenty spoke configuration, i wonder if the powertap hub can. If you phone the local agents they recommend either a 28 or 32 hole hub. I must admit that I have enjoyed riding my DA wheels for the past month and have not used my powertap partly cause I have had to lend the front wheel to a friend.
  16. I have seen you this week on ou kaapse weg/sun valley.I am sure I saw that bike at Olympic cycles. You made me go buy the same set of wheels. It will look cool. You will also have a set of wheels for the windy days.
  17. I have my powertap built into a Ac350 rim. i have had no problems for past year. The wheelset with the powertap will weight more or less the same as as your DA wheels. It is also a 32hole rim and they come in white also.
  18. My first was in 1994 then none again till 2005 and this will be my seventh. My fastest was 316 in 2008. My best ride was last year with my 11 year old son on a tandem in 2010 and we did 5:05.Just to enjoy the ride and witness his sense of achievement was amazing. 2011 was actually the year I had promised to take him when he was twelve but last year i had the feeling that I must take him and got a substitution entry. He developed epilepsy two months after the argus which has been difficult to control and we have not been able to ride the tandem again. If you want to ride with your kids/wife, dont keep postponing. Do it. Its worth it and you dont know what tommorrow holds.
  19. Hi let us know know how the seeding went of this year compared to last. I am really keen to know if they are treating all the seeding events nationally as harsh as they doing here in the Cape.
  20. The Grape to Raisin Escape: That is how you will look and feel after being sunkissed for three days in this weather.
  21. I am in F too. i am looking for a time in the 320-330 though.
  22. Food poisoning if that is the case, could be different to the viral gastro that is going around and could be quite serious. Please forget about training and go see a doc to check if you fit.
  23. I agree if we are uniformly affected then it is fine. i am not particularly perturbed by which PPA group I ride in. I really wonder with this over manipulation of especially the argus seeding rides that come next year we have a problem with our argus groups. does anyone know how some of the other upcountry seeding rides have been manipulated or not?
  24. i worked my time backwards for last years 99er and last year delta/beta was 1.0 vs 0.91 for this year that i calculated. i dont mind the ghostrider time increase because if you look at the number of guys who came in under 3h11 in 2009 then it is about 275 and for 2011 it is about 350. The increase in ghostrider time balances this. So if delta was left at one then for my 318 this year i would get 29.4 which is would be similar to my 29 for my 327 last year. But somehow they figured the same course got easier.it does not make sense. The ghostrider time compensates for the weather on the day. Maybe they found AB teleporter at the foot of vissers that transport u to the top of odendaal.
  25. I still maintain the way they work out the index punishes people for improving. If too many people improve then the race must have been too easy rather than being fitter therefore the ghost rider must be made much faster.
