  1. I'm far from being a Specialized fanboy, but I'd suggest having a good look at the Specialized Sequoia, they pop up in the classifieds every once in awhile. [Edit: I picked up a demo version for R16k 2yrs ago] Steel frame, enough mounting points for every rack you could think of, good low down gearing and a relaxed comfy geometry. I've done a few multi-day bikepacking trips with mine: https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/178477-klein-karoo-bike-packing-trip/page-5?do=findComment&comment=3559311
  2. So, episode 1 done. Thoughts: - Valverde needs to just accept he's basically bald and crop what's left on his head.. - maybe I've misjudged Quintana, there might be more to him than I thought. - Landa.. seriously.. Not my favourite team & I'm not big on reading subtitles but I'll definitely keep watching.
  3. App is up to date, thanks. This should be a data setting linked to a person's profile.
  4. Funny, I didn't think Epic was run by a NPO? Because if it's not there's a profit margin built in that could be distributed as a partial refund, or more in their favour, as a discount for next year's entry..
  5. If it's on the internet then it must be true! ..oh wait, or is that Facebook?
  6. How often do you do rides of over 80km without stopping for coffee midway... Judging by the amount you ate it's unlikely to be a nutritional issue. Far more likely that your body is just unused to riding at intensity for a longer duration. Train to race.
  7. As someone who took major strain in the heat I'd have to say I agree. However, that also assumes that the intensity of your training rides match how you rode the race. In my case I threw all my plans out the window and let my competitive spirit overtake my abilities & preparation (in the heat & considering the length of race)..
  8. Thanks for sharing, that's a serious selection! I tried to take a large selection to hopefully have something that I'd feel like. But looks like additional variety in drinks is in order!
  9. I'd definitely support that, the 2018 event in April worked far better for me from a heat perspective. I guess with the format of the event allowing you to choose when to ride (excluding the racing machines of course) the risk of heat related casualties are maybe lower than during a normal event, so reduces the concern around time of year. Regardless, great event organising by Meurant and his crew as always. Late Sat afternoon I mentioned to Meurant that a section of the singletrack climb was being damaged by water from a damaged water furrow next to the track. An hour or so later it was all fixed up, really impressive response.
  10. Out of interest, what did you eat during the event? I always struggle when it's hot to eat, even when having long leisurely breaks like I did. I can't comprehend how you're able to keep yourself fueled sufficiently for such a mammoth effort!
  11. Seriously unbelievable effort, well done! Think I did 8 laps during the time you did your first 17 or so..
  12. Well, if there's loadshedding during dark hours there's a risk that light batteries won't be able to get recharged.
  13. I've got a couple of 26" tyres lying around. CT based, southern peninsula
  14. Let me rephrase my previous comment... I'm thankful that the organisers sent out an SMS, saving me driving all the way to Stellenbosch. Just that if the SMS was sent when the FB post happened it would've saved me 45km. I wonder if committing to the race by leaving home classifies as beating Strava's "Quitters day" or whether I'll still need to go for a ride ????
  15. Would've been great if they'd thought to send out the SMS before posting on FB..turn around time I guess.
  16. Well, after Hels they'll be so far ahead that it won't affect me at all! Starting to think dropping back a start group might be an option to explore.
  17. So I've been seeded in 1B which according to the start sequence is u16? I'm rather far past 16, am I to assume it's a mixed group with a whole bunch of 50kg wannabe racing snakes that are going to drop me like a stone at the bottom of Hels?
  18. Montagu pass from the George side.
  19. Crossing the Gouritz
  20. Next year I'll spend my money elsewhere..
  21. Oh, if anyone found a multitool, bomb and co2 valve/adapter somewhere before wp2 I'd love the multitool back...
  22. I bailed after wp2 and headed back to the finish via the tar road. Made a point of not turning back onto the route and rather rode in via the car parking route. If you've bailed, why on earth would you cross the finish line.. think the individual riders have to take the blame for that one. Did anyone else struggle to buy non-alcoholic drinks at the finish? By 1pm I couldn't even find water to buy, total stuff up by the organisers. Given the forecast how could they not ensure sufficient water at the finish!
  23. Interview with the winner: https://bikepacking.com/plog/jakub-sliacan-srmr-interview/
