  1. No, but I've not actively searched for this info either, nor am I excluding the possibility that there maybe a rider that does . I have seen some SA cricketers wearing them though. Like some Hubbers I also have keen interest in science, and have an electronics engineering background. I have also followed the post SAPS career of Danie Krugel, who is using quantum physics to locate missing persons and other objects. This so-called abstract science has more solid science in it than the Powerband.
  2. Very true. My point was that famous people are targeted as moving billboards for every nifty thing in vogue. Some of it is positive such as the SOS and Sweatsafe products, but then you have the Powerband thingamajiggy ... If I was a celebrity I would just hate having to deal with all of this, so their agents sign them up for all sorts of things.
  3. It's a load of C.R.A.P. !! A few mates of mine tried them, and now that the novelty and 'placebo effect' have worn off, the bracelets are now cluttering up a drawer somewhere. Thing is that famous sports people will endorse a pink cable tie around their wrists if they get paid enough for it. I often see an SOS bracelet advert featuring Kevin Evans, but have never seen the guy actually wearing it ?? If these famous sports people have to use/wear half the things they endorse they would probably look like a Christmas tree. Stick with products backed by sound science ...
  4. According to a FB friend the cyclist's name was Terrence Baker.
  5. I've used the Bontrager UltraLight tubes together with Cont. Force/Attack tyres for about a year and they rode well. It made a noticable difference over standard tube types. I haven't seen them on the LBS shelf too often in the past year and have been too lazy to go look for them, so I've been using the plain-jane type tubes. I saw some Michelin Latex tubes at Olympic Cycles for R160ea and am tempted to use them for racing sometime, but they are $$ !!
  6. It'll make an interesting route if it's included towards the finish of a PPA race such as the 99'er. Instead of going up the N7 towards the Vissershok turn-off, they can then route it past the dairy, up and over the hill towards the 4 way stop and then up Vissershok

The UCI sleeveless rule applies to both road and mtb licenced races. I'm not sure why, probably a dated 'image thing' for the sport, but couldn't be bothered to find out, nor argue it's merits with the race comm.

It's only an issue if you're racing in a licenced category. Fandacious is right about it being a UCI rule in this respect. You can pretty much dress as you like in the fun ride categories.

Pic link from last year's Spring League Taalmonument Hill Climb .. http://torquepics.co.za/SubVets_Vets_Master__g94-_p3834.html I thinks it's Bobby Karlhuber, but stand to be corrected. Always see him dressed the same in the vets bunch though. The dress sense doesn't faze me though.

One of the vets in the Western Cape wears a sleeveless top in licenced races and nothing gets said.
  11. I recently bought a pair of Olympic Hurricane II mtb shoes at Sportmans Warehouse for the gf, which she used straight out the box to ride our recent 7 day Sedge2Edge 700Km mtb ride. The 'on special' price I think was R400. She remarked on how comfortable they were. No niggles at all with them. Since we both have the same shoe size, I decided to use them yesterday instead of my Time shoes on a 40Km mtb ride. I was very impressed with the fit and comfort, and am now going to get myself a pair and keep my Time's spare.
  12. If the said 'pedal cycle' has a significant replacement value, then I suppose the cost and effort to find it would be justifiable. Perhaps some or all of the components could then be salvaged thereby minimising the claim. On the other hand it may unfortunately or fortunately, depending on how one views this, help to refute the claim. The recent demise of PedalCare was largely because the underwriters felt that the cycling market was too risky. It's a known fact that when times are tough insurance claims rise. Pity for the doubtful genuine claims though.
  13. A year ago I purchased a set of HED Bastogne wheels for racing, which in this past year have spent more time in the LBS than on my bike due to broken spokes, hub problems and cracked rims. The LBS got a replacement set of HED's which looked very shoddy, so I refused them. They have now offered to replace them with a set of Mavic R-Sys wheels, or to refund me. I've now ridden the R-Sys wheels and found them to be nice stiff wheels that roll smoothly. I'm very aware of the chequered past of this model wheelset, and have read most of what I can find posted on the hub and elsewhere, which concerns me. I weigh on ave 74Kg and ride a Look585, to indicate some idea of weight, and I do ride in league events. My dilemna is whether to keep the wheels, or get a refund and buy something else. So I would like to get some opinions to help me decide ....
  14. Hi David, I read your article yesterday in the latest Tabletalk issue. I was shocked that I hadn't heard about it before. I've not been on the Hub as of late, and had not heard about it through the CC club. I realise that you commute to/from work, sometimes in difficult traffic/weather circumstances, and you are THE MOST VISIBLE cyclist I have ever seen on the road, but please take care of yourself. I'm not sure if you carry an ID bracelet, or visible contact/medical details, but just know that there are a lot of us at CCC that are prepared to have our contact numbers listed there, me for one. Please feel free to put my number on. Until we see you again, take care !
  15. Hey David, haven't seen you around for a while. If you want to make the Zoo Lake rendevous in time you'd better start riding from Cape Town today Ok ok .. just kidding .. see you on Sat. CCC is riding there from Edgemead.
  16. Lucky he didn't request decaffeinated coffee verbatim .. in English with an Afrikaans accent .. could be a 'don't touch me on my plane' moment.
  17. As of late there have been quite a few serious attacks on cyclists in this area. Particularly where the Old Malmesbury Rd meets the N7. Please avoid riding there [or anywhere on the N7] unless in a large group.
  18. Go to www.team-edenglen.com and find out there.
  19. I remember going over mats at top of Boyes Drive too
  20. No credit needed ... auction it for charity then. Put a reasonable reserve price on it according to make/model/condition/current store price, date it for say a week, and create an auction thread.
  21. Happy Birthday David !
  22. Time to auction it now David ...
  23. Let them start in Vets, and enforce a short timed break [up to a minute ?]between WL and Vets after the first hour, or before the first hotspot. Those women that can bridge the gap deserve to be there, and if not they can still make a decent race of it. The first hour of racing with the Vets should at least allow for them to up their game a bit and make the bunch starting logistics easier. Marshalling needs to be fine tuned on this though.
  24. Hi Leon, City Cycling Club has training rides from the Edgemead BP at 05:30 on Tue/Wed/Thurs, but it's progressive and includes a rest week. Contact the club through www.citycyclingclub.org and find out more details ... or PM ccc2 on The Hub.
