  1. tubeless tyres fork wheels frame groupset
  2. First select the gear you want to limp back with. Shorten chain to the correct length or just one link longer (If you can still thread it throught the rear derailer this will be good (Granny is your friend)put rear wheel back on bike, set the higher/lower limits on the derailer so the chain woun't jump, cycle slowly out of trouble.
  3. Some basic maffs, 29er have bigger wheels, thus acceleration requires more effort, but once you have momentum this goe rwell. 29ers have a longer wheel base, thus sharp cornering takes a tad more skill (but only a tad more skill) 29er can have higher centre of gravity, making sudden changes of direction a bit more hair raising The great debate is what do you want to ride, as most SA riders are undercover roadies, the 29er makes the transition to dirt easier. For a long enduro like crater cruise and transbaviaans, 29er are da bomb For sabie, groenkloof and other hilly and technical stuff the smaller wheels accelerate better, cornering can be done more confidently and the wheels are stronger. The other debate is whether you need a shock at all on a 29er. Some experiments have shown that a carbon or steel fork is enough, even at Groenkloof. Some finding show that STEEL is the best material for a 29er, but carbon and alu will do. Unfortunately a single speed 29er has been known to rip the legs of a jittery rider, the rule is "momentum is your friend, sudden stops lead to a sudden (legless) death".
  4. From observing various cyclists Assos is a spelling mistake the last s should be an L. On a more servious note, I have cycled on 4 day cycling holidays, on 24 hour races on 7 day cycle tours ext. I have never owned a pair of Asso(l)s. What works is a lot of cream on the bum (Baby bum butter works), a comfortable saddle (pain is caused by having a badly matched saddle) and lots of basic hygiene. Also changing shorts each day allows different chaff marks over the duration, and does help. Always remember the baby bum butter.
  5. that saddle needs some extra specil set up. THE nose must be horizontal to the ground and the back of the saddle should flare up a little bit. Either that or numb nuts
  6. does not matter it will always be the wrong gear. Either too light or too heavy........
  7. depends on what you plan to ride. If it has hills in it or you have weanie legs take granny with. However, the hard core answer is all you need is one gear, stop being a poofter, buy a single speed and never have to ask again.
  8. three things (maybe four things) that nobody may touch without explicit permission: My bike My tools my wife and My chess clock
  9. The big question is always, if CRC is making such a kiling, why don't their competitives do the same? No they would rather remain in their comfort zone and attempt to kill the competitor with complaints. However the following has happened in RSA, CWCycles saw the gap and "duplicated" CRC in South Africa. Just on chains he matches CRC, and you don't have to pay the customs, exchange risk ext which normally comes to 15-20% of the CRC price, so now I will support CWC for chains specifically. I hear a rumble, the RSA bike retail sector, did to CWC what the Spanish are trying to do to the Irish, a smear campaign and a launch to change the rules back to the dark ages. However, it won't work as international law is not so easy. Lastly, I bought an on-one from Kiwi, why? because he is the official importer, meaning I cannot get it cheaper in South Africa by either importing it myself, or getting someone else to do it for me and Kiwi does all the schelp wrt customs ext. Kiwi Planet X rules. Thank you

  11. that is why we pay such exhorbatant fees to TSA and CSA officials and race commasaires. To warn and discipline such slackers immediately
  12. Interesting factoid about Campy, you can change up and down at least half a cluster in one sweep, o if you are climbing or suddenly spinning out of gears, you can do a wild jump to the correct gear, unlike shimano........ and yes with practice you can do it in the drops too, just strength your thumbs, (do sms drills if you must)
  13. On the road Campy, on the trail SRAM, all else is a compromise. Yes this is a broad generalisation, but trust me on this.
  14. 1. Made your own biltong. 2. Watched a game of rugby from a box at a stadium. 3. Dated accross the "colour bar". 4. Did military service. 5. Ate at Wanda's in Soweto. 6. Visited another African Country and felt .......... 7. .........add some more...........
  15. R500 for a led lenser from Cape union mart. buy the H7 rechargeable and cable tie it co your helmet, will last for about 4-5 hours with one set of penlight batteries
  16. Remember that once you have transended your own ego you will embrace the minimalist view: Ride a single speed. Ride naked as often as possible. Ride at night. Steel is the best material to build bikes with, so get a steel bike (at least one) Ride with a helmet (on your head). Wear sunscreen except when riding naked at night then it is optional. All cyclists have at least 4 bikes, if you don't you not a cyclist. Build a clunker out of spare parts, most of which you have borrowed, stolen, dug out of the LBS trashcans or been given as a gift. Loan it to newbies as often as possible. Never wear underpants with cycling shorts or trisuits. Just don't ask why.
  17. Raleigh is a people's bike. I bike for everyone, or at least one that more people can afford. Like all bikes that are starting out there were a number of design and mnufacturing flaws that were ironed out. So yes raligh is good, so are Dahitsu motorcars, and Vuka motorbikes. and that is where the problem is. The average roadie (which excludes BigH and dirt rider immediately) does not want to be seen near such a accessible product. Roadies want to buy from bikeshops run by people that own porsche's and hardly dangerous's. They want to cycle stuff endorsed by donald duck, and riden by chicken. It is part of the culture. Why drink ricoffee when only nescafe will do? It is not about being good, but rather about looking good. On the other hand each to his own, I would also prefer to ride a bike that weighs in under 9 kgs, which few raleighs even with all the bling did.
  18. To the velo club that was cycling this morning (20 Nov)east of Pretoria: You guys are a moving road hazard that are a danger to yourselves and other road users. Three immediate points: Cycling in a group 10 deep and 4 wide on a narrow road is stupid, especially when you are only travelling at 20- 30km/hr. It is impossible for cars to pass you safely. Either break into smaller groups and cycle 2 /3 wide or consider being sideswiped by a overtaking car that has to avoid oncoming traffic. THINK a bit. Cycling on the right hand side of the road is STUPID, no mater how grand you feel that you are passing your mates. Consider actualy giving other road users some road in the future. As a mtbker, runner, road cyclist and duathlete, I was ashamed at your behaviour this morning. Today you were lucky, next time that white BMW that cut in front of you (this was not me as I was behind you guys when it happened) might not have the time to pass all of you safely, and he will be forced to take out the front third of the group to avoid oncoming traffic. Please be more considerate and careful in the future.
  19. grading: All trails in Jhb are black, not because they are difficult but because Jhb is a tuff place, and if you have to get off the road bike then it is difficult. All trails in PTA are green/blue because Pta is more laid back and a PTA rider just won't admit that he finds them difficult. (ja dude, it is easy especially if you walk the last bit). All trails in CT are midnight black because they sort of invented falling off the bike. Trails in Natal are DH because Greg Minnaar and Morewood bikes hails from there. Trails in Northern Cape are dusty and gravel roads and go on forever, because they have heard of tar but thing it is a bad idea as it melts in summer.
  20. try the monument, it is more challenging, more up hills and tight corners on the downhills. Costs about R20 or less to goin so it is worth it.
  21. If he was a mtber he would have had tubeless
