I don't mtb but I am not sure about that, a lot of what I have heard on the road is that it is often the amateur that pushes the tyre too far or to greater extremes because they handle it badly than the professional who pushes the tyre close to the limit but never over it.

Also don't get too excited, watching a grade 8 at rowing camp swing one forward, and then through his legs to faceplant HARD was HILARIOUS
