  1. That came out nice Gandalf Must have hours in those ally polished poles. Edit: I wouldn't put anything on the aluminium coating wise i.e. clear-coat etc. It will more than likely mess with the crisp reflection you are getting now. Maybe just a light polish/wax for now and then every couple of weeks to prevent the oxidization?
  2. Thanks Ed. My wife told me to stop mucking about now and get started on her shoe cupboard....
  3. Lol! No orders unfortunately. Was just curious to see what the laminated Birch ply would look like. I had to make my own tamper as I couldn't find the right diameter for my machine when I was looking. (My cheap-ass Delonghi has an odd size basket 52mm) Smallest I could find at the time was a 53mm which wouldn't fit.
  4. I did my first brew over December. Plan was to have it ready to drink at New Year's. Everything went according to plan during the preparation. I put it into the bathroom to do it's thing. Unfortunately we experienced a heat wave here in Durban over December and the temp in the bucket went up to 28deg... Now THAT was a fruity flavoured beer!!!! Since then, I use an adjustable cooling tower thermostat (-30 to +30 degrees) wired into a 15A plug that I plug an old fridge in the garage into. Temp is set at 18deg and that seems to be the sweet spot. Just finishing a Coopers Dark Ale batch and have my eyes set on a partial mash Irish red ale next....
  5. You could "build" a kit for a lot less of you are that way inclined. Also check out Beer Bros for an online option. You need a 25lt plastic bucket (With a tap is handy but not necessary), a hydrometer to measure specific gravity, some sanitiser (Bleach will also work), an airlock (You can build one with some fishtank tubing and a plastic bottle) and a stick on thermometer to keep an eye on the brewing temperature. A bottling syphon is useful when bottling as is a sanitising bucket but again not absolutely necessary. I found it more satisfying "building" my own kit rather than buying it.
  6. After the little turning project for my hand grinder, I couldn't stop myself.... Had a few spare hours, an old tamper that a mate made me, some birch ply off-cuts and a piece of brass. Laminated the birch ply and shaped the handle in the lathe. Finished it off with 600 water paper and three coats of clear lacquer. Modified the existing 316 Stainless steel "industrial" tamper by turning down the knurled handle to 13mm dia by 30 long and tapped the end M6. The head was polished with 600 grit water paper. The brass screw was turned out of an old reclaimed brass bolt I found. Shank was machined to 6mm with an M6 tread cut onto the end and the head ended up at 16mm. Cut the slot with a Dremel and used a needle file to get it looking presentable and then buffed it. All assembled and I was quite chuffed with the result. (Might try and find a nice piece of timber and redo the handle at a later stage. This was more about using stuff that was lying around) I am really enjoying the woodworking and up cycling at the moment.
  7. Mine lasted less than a week.....
  8. No definitely not creosote. I use some fairly thick stuff on my garden shed every year and thought it was Waxol (Lady at TC Cabins said it was Waxol) It leaves a waxy/oily layer on that prevents weathering and rot (and insect damage apparently) I was obviously misinformed.
  9. Mate of mine does high end kitchens and they use Sketch up to do the designs. I always though that Sketchup was a kids programme.... (Ignorant I know) Boy was I wrong!! I've never played with it but might be tempted to give it a go soon after seeing what these okes were able to do with kitchen and cabinetry design!
  10. Just to be clear.... Waxol is that gloopy brown stuff that you paint onto your Gemini hut once a year to make it last longer...? Won't that mess up your clothes if you put it on a chair?
  11. I suppose so. Just add a bit of warm amd fuzzy without the CGI. Not a bad movie at all for a Saturday evening's entertainment.
  12. Watched "Criminal" last night. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Good cast as well [emoji106]
  13. You on your own there bud....
  14. There are always exceptions to the rules...
  15. IMO there is nothing more disappointing than re-watching a TV series that you remember fondly from your youth. Edit: Or the modern day remake for that matter...
  16. You are not alone
  17. Try Eco Timber Traders Edit: 18mm Birch Ply R995/sheet exc vat 15mm Birch Ply R865/sheet exc vat Sheets are 2440x1220
  18. This morning I was sitting on a park bench next to a homeless man. I started a conversation by asking him how he ended up this way. He said, “Up until last week, I still had it all. I had plenty to eat, my clothes were washed and pressed, I had a roof over my head, I had TV and Internet , and I went to the gym, the pool, and the library. I was working on my MBA on-line. I had no bills and no debt. I even had full medical coverage.” I felt sorry for him, so I asked, “What happened? Drugs? Alcohol? Divorce?” “Oh no, nothing like that,” he said. “No, no. I got out of prison.”
  19. I had some spare time this weekend so decided to put it to good use. A few months ago, I bought a hand coffee grinder off Amazon and hated the original plastic knob on the handle from day one. Decided to give it a bit of class.... Scrounged a small piece of Imbuia from a mate and set about shaping it in the lathe. I had no idea what the final product was supposed to look like but started cutting wood anyway. Using the cross slide, things were progressing nicely. I needed to get to the back bit so I decided to use a "hand tool" which didn't end well and I took a nice big chunk out of it when it dug in... Bummer I was really miffed but it turned out great in the end as I had to machine that divot out and that in turn determined the final shape of the knob! Finishing was done with emery tape and water paper (Not the most woodworky stuff to use but my background is metal so I used what I had lying around) Ended up finishing it with 600 water paper and my fingers. Machined a stainless M8 male insert in the bottom that was drilled and tapped M4 to accept the M4 button head capscrew that holds it on. Fits into your hand nicely now and gives it a more upmarket look Not the most spectacular thing but I was quite happy with the final result
  20. Any chance of some more info on that Ed? Been keen to build one for a while. Does it have a built in amp? Where did you get the module from?
  21. Watched Concussion with Will Smith last night. Scary stuff that NFL..... Edit: Based on a true story as well
  22. Watched it last night [emoji106] [emoji106]
  23. The Bits of BACO was an interesting watch... Edit: If you were into the BMX scene in the 90's
  24. Got UKTVNow loaded and working last night just to see what it was like. At least their EPG works. Did however find it a bit awkward working outside of Kodi as everything that we watch (with the exception or RedBullTV) is accessible within Kodi
  25. It was actually not too bad to watch either. (OK except for the walking into the arena bit.... that was a bit lame.)
