  1. It was actually a Sunday. And if you actually read the opening post you would know exactly who the Karen is. And if you are a local cyclist you would know exactly who the Karen is and what he does. He is well qualified to comment here.
  2. https://www.instagram.com/p/C2fdb8eIMwP/ anyone know if this is easy to watch down here?
  3. topic title slightly misleading, not exactly a "random morning", but "bluesky sunday a month before the Argus". It is peak cars vs bikes season, so this is a big volume day.
  4. I liked this one the most. Also because the guy might actually have checked behind to see what was coming behind first, or not.
  5. he are living that side of the worsgordyn!
  6. I think you mean Main Rd M4. There are many victoria roads around, including one near 12 apostles and the M4 itself in saltriver. The actual main road muiz=>clovelly was supposed to be done by the 2010 world cup. I don't know how much actual corruption was involved there, but my civil engineering contacts told me that it became an incredibly complex job due to what was uncovered below., It was eventually split up into multiple phases and none of the contractors made money on it. It's a real pity that no actual cycling infrastructure was included along the way.
  7. because if you don't have the best riders there you need to stop calling it the TdF of mtb. I do think that one is done now, maybe every edition after the olympics they should somehow do an XCO slanted version and make it more exciting to get the biggest names out here (speaking about the men, but sure it applies to both). We had nino vs spez team vs cannondale on the epic podium and the olympic medals and the Bulls keeping it flying for the marathon guys. I feel the level has dropped since they moved it to XCM.
  8. I'm confused. you need to be currently riding a bike to talk schmack here? The empathy for broken body:broken bike ratio seems about right though. I found a cannondale at R150k for you. looks superfast too
  9. It backs up my theory that in most sports the move of having equal prizemoney is quick windowdressing and achieves almost nothing long term.
  10. good point, apparently it's under control but was very large. would be an interesting ride The data is out there, but people still need to follow the rules. Just like you can find the recipe for napalm easily on the internet, it doesn't give people an excuse to build firebombs. The best method is to track down the chops who ruin it for the rest of us, and name and shame them on social media hard.
  11. Is Amy still racing?
  12. fun police go check your rules!! I don't think it is. relevant to bike: 2.1. Every rider may only ride a human powered vehicle or an E-Bike to complete the course, subject to clause 3 below 2.9. A rider may not ride a bicycle fitted with triathlon, time trial or “Spinachi”-type bars and the organisers reserve the right to disallow the use of certain types of bladed wheels that are considered unsafe a real stretch: 2.2. Every rider must ride carefully and with due regard to the safety of other cyclists, other road users and spectators. Other rules that are clearly transgressed by many: 2.12. A rider may not use a personal music system, e.g. iPod, or a radio communication device, including a cellular phone, whilst riding, except that members of professional teams may use a radio communication device if in accordance with UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) rules and regulations which can be found at www.cyclingsa.com. 2.15. A rider may not use foul or offensive language or make offensive, indecent or inappropriate gestures. ebikes, where the cheaters:legit ratio is approaching unity 3.6.1. it weighs less than 30 kg; 3.6.2. it looks like a bicycle and accordingly must contain pedals which serve as the principal method of propulsion; 3.6.3. the auxiliary electric motor with which it is equipped has a maximum continuous rated power of 250W (or 0.25kW); 3.6.4. the motorised assistance only engages when the rider is pedalling, progressively reduces and finally cuts off as the vehicle reaches a speed of 25 km/h or sooner (i.e. no permanently powered bicycles); 3.6.5. it is fitted with a control mechanism that limits the maximum electric powered speed on PAS (power assist) mode to 25 km/h; drugs are cool (for funriders only, but don't crash!) 2.29. Riders in the U17, Elite Men and Ladies racing groups may not use performance enhancing drugs. A rider, other than a licensed rider, is not subject to anti-doping testing, except that any rider may be tested for alcohol or drugs after an accident. The Mankini clause 2.16. A rider must wear clothing appropriate for a family event at all times.
  13. WOW - they actually closed them?!!! https://www.capetowncycletour.com/lifecycle-week/ctct/race-entries/ only international and 42km available.
  14. It's only controversial because you're cherrypicking anecdotal data. Maybe I am putting you in that box of chops who say:"I'm not doing the argus because it was windy last year". Or capetonians who moan about the terrible weather in general, it's flippen balmy where we live! Winter rainfall here comes mainly in frontal systems, big storm for 2/3 days and then lovely sunshine for a week or longer.. So while July is "rainy season", you're much more likely to get a lovely day than not. I don't have access to saws historical data, but this is probably satellite based with some local real world(CT airport) to tweak their algorithm. https://weatherspark.com/y/85361/Average-Weather-in-Swellendam-South-Africa-Year-Round
  15. I guess we can ignore the weather during those weeks because it was also on lockdown? capetonians are hard work sometimes. 5 years of drought, and then they moan when it rains a bit in winter once the dams are fuller. I know some people still have PTSD from not having lubed their drivetrains in 2022 and crying at the LBS the next week, my gravel bike survived it totally fine. Of course you can always wait and do a last minute entry once windguru is in the range and it is predicting goldilocks weather. You'll be in the category of people moaning that there's no goody bag and accomodation is hard to find. I hope Rohan takes the 20% discount at this stage away for apathy tax. but looking quickly at some archive stuff, 2019 was indeed reported as muddy, looks ok in the pictures https://fullsus.co.za/posthumus-and-webb-win-2019-chas-everitt-around-the-pot-overberg-100miler-presented-by-seesa/ https://www.velotales.com/2018/07/around-pot-2018.html 2018 has some nice little words that ring true, and why I'm defending this event, and even more ok if the flipfloppers don't enter It's not often that a race comes along that has the ability to fill one with such emotion. Not the "Why-did-I-enter-this-race-I'm-going-to-die" sort of emotion - we'll get to that later - the "I-don't-want-to-tell-anyone-about-this-event-because-it's-amazing" selfishness that filled us after last year's race. This is a bike riding event run by people who get bike riding. Things just work. Everyone is a rock star. And there is a burger and beer at the finish. Dane the Limpet The selfishness comes in that with the inevitable growth of an event, the very things that make an event unique are lost as the event scales. So I tried not to tell anyone about The Around The Pot 100 Miler. But someone spoke, breaking the secret pact we'd all sworn to keep and come race day this year, registration was mass of race snakes, weekend warriors, endurance addicts and sufferfest seekers. And their families. And their friends.
  16. shouldn't be any ebikes in the elite bunch in the first place.
  17. Touche! Not sure if they are explicitly outlawed, I was riding it a lot then but your point is valid. There's a reason I only did it once. I found the long fast drag past cape point the toughest actually!
  18. Two in a row, but statistics don't work like that. It's like entering the Argus for the perfect conditions because last year the wind didn't blow.
  19. When i did it on fixie, I found the long downhills way harder work. think i was on 48x18 (maybe because i only had front break), but spinning the cranks freely sounds fun, but far from safe with a lots of riders around like on argus day.
  20. exactly. Putting on an event in this day and age is HARD. support the ones that are able to make it work. In this case for OTP they have an army of volunteers who put in the hours. It takes 4/5 years to build up the goodwill of a decent event, but fickle johnnies will take their after tax randelas somewhere else for a few years if there is one single stuff up, no matter who was at fault. The dates don't work for me for RvR tis year, but I am superkeen to go give OTP another klap. I feel it is very important to support a race that has had a setback like this, as the entry numbers will most likely be reduced. what I am trying to say is: a)support both, if you can b)don't talk k%^k trashing a race if you haven't done your homework and got your wires twisted. c)RvR are on official notice for advertising legit Belgian beer and then delivering Stella artois. They have a pass for a dog ate my homework excuse just this one time, mainly because they put out this incredible promise for 2024. https://bikehub.co.za/events/races/view/723/ronde-van-riebeek I wanna see a 100miler 100s club
  21. here for the spice, didn't seem like a thread was up yet!! Can Beers win a 3rd? Could Nino win a 3rd (he's coming, right?) speedcompany going back to the winning combination of just 1 dad to drive the van and make 2 minute noodles? will the ladies have some GC drama?
  22. partly cloudy and mild
  23. I get the feeling you would have moaned if they put the race on. You have clearly forgotten what actually happened in the run up to it being postponed for 24 hours and then cancelled out right. It makes you now look both ENTITLED and WRONG. This is a lekker event, in a lekker part of the country run by lekker people. It's a free country, so ENTITLED people can enter, but the less that do, the better it is for the rest of us. So this whole thread is win win in my books. Did you actually travel to swellendam? by plane, or by car? I rode my bike twice that weekend, got more than 200km in. The postponement was unfortunately out of their hands. Anyway, you would have got this email below. I replied that we had actually used the tents so no refund required. They actually gave us who were still there watching the rugby on the saturday night free burgers.
  24. good enough for this bloke https://www.instagram.com/reel/C2NPMFPqMwv/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== back on topic. awesome bike, thanks for sharing
