  1. @Nick; my first set of tyres on my SS roadbike was gator's. They were brilliant!! Pretty light with more than enough grip, this was actually the reason I didn't go for them again (they are a bit boring to use for commuting, can't skid them without crying about the price, I literally pulled off pieces of rubber at a time). My 2nd and 3rd set is Maxxis Detonator's. They hold up pretty good to all the punishment I dish out with my SS commuting, that involves jumping off curbs, popping wheelies and riding everywhere and over everything
  2. Cycle on the left, pedestrians walk on the right... It's easier to dodge only cars than dodging pedestrians and cars!!!
  3. Dave, at some stage there was a guy in Cpt somewhere that built custom drift trikes. Maybe try get hold of him. Here's a facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/DriftTrikesSA And there's a guy in jhb that builds them aswell: His number 0721779860 (Daniel)
  4. Hi Braai, I don't know of anyone that has imported bikes from the East. But I have imported a few RC parts from various eastern countries without any issues. With regards to the pics above: 1) Compare the geometry to that of a known brand like Inspired 2) Check the weight, the cheaper bikes tend to weigh a lot!!!! 3) Check components. Just remember that a cheap bike is awesome to learn on but you will be upgrading in the future!!! Join our Facebook group https://www.facebook...29670410443623/
  5. Hi Brendan, we are around 50 trials riders in SA with about 10-15 in Gauteng. Here is our Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/129670410443623/ Feel free to post your bike there or anything else you would like to know.
  6. Muggins, I ride trials (jumping onto, over and off of stuff), so I do tend to land on my head every now and again. And after every big crash on my head, if the finances allows it, I try and replace the helmet. Rather safe than sorry!!!! So if you can afford it rather replace it. You only have one head!!
  7. 3 Easy steps to fix Avid's: Step 1: Remove brakes; Step 2: Throw brakes in garbage bin; Step 3: Buy Shimano, Hope or anything else!!
  8. From Cyrildene across the damn mountain!!!!
  9. The balls in the flat pedal (rider's that is), is in general a bit bigger that those of clip in's... But in term's of pedal bearings, I would suggest you strip it, clean and polish it, repack it with clean grease and ride. It's very rare for pedal bearings to pit due to the fact that they don't collect as much dust as the hub or bb
  10. Hey guys, I've been commuting to gym and back on my singlespeed. (This is only about 5km one way, depending on my route home it might even be 15 on some days and the shortest route possible is 950km on leg day). But here's my question: How do you go through a double lane Traffic circle if you want to exit at the "2nd exit", so basically making a right turn? I sat waiting for the cars to give me a chance for a minute or so then just fell in behind a car and sprinted my A$$ off to not get run over by the rest. I tried keeping to the road rules but clearly the cars didn't feel like giving me my piece of the road. So what is the correct way to hand this situation?
  11. Manie please post this on the Critical Mass Pretoria facebook page so that we can get some numbers. I am an admin on the group so it will be pinned to the top. https://www.facebook.com/groups/CMPTA/ Kind regards Hannes
  12. Hey, that setup should work. Might just be a bit heavy on the back wheel. Tarty is still the cheapest on the street frames, and if you have the cash you can't go wrong with Inspired!!!
  13. In my experience anything that's cheap will feel and perform cheap. Cheap doesn't always mean bad, but every time you wear them and see someone else's nicer, more expensive kit you'll end up wishing you spent a bit more the first time. I have zero experience with proper cycling shoes (bought my 1st pair this morning. I ended up buying Specialized sport mtb shoes for R1160). I will be taking them for a ride tomorrow... But I would seriously recommend that you rather wait a bit longer till you can fork out R1000 for a nicer pair that will probably last you for a few years!
  14. Here is my living room... Built the rack in a morning's time with off-cut pieces of wood I got from my folks.
  15. Sportmans Warehouse should have the cheaper generic versions
  16. My newly built stand
  17. I have no experience with any mtb shops in Jhb but for a roadbike singlespeed project go check out Hunter cycling in Braamfontein. I drive through from Pta to go shop there!!! Brilliant service, they stock very little cheap stuff, the parts they do stock is very close to international online prices!!!
  18. Wow that bamboo bike is AWESOME!!!! How did you connect them at the steerer etc? Does anyone know of someone in the Pta area that can sandblast a steel frame for me? It has some rust spots that i cant get off with elbow grease
  19. Hi Nico. I would start by loosening the Stem bolts and just tightening the topcap bolt and then the stem again. In many cases it might just be that the headset is just a bit loose.
  20. Hey guys... So normally I wouldn't go for a cheap watch, but I've had this urge lately to get a pocket watch (I have no idea why). But I cannot justify paying R4500 for a nice Ingersol one, so I ended up bidding for a KS (Kronen and Sohne) one on ebay, final bid plus transport was a full R112. Does anyone have some info on this brand? A quick google search spat out their website (some very nice pieces at an average or $100) but some reviews make them out to be chonky sh@t... 21. On my trials bike I use duct tape as a rim liner, add about 1 tablespoon of babypowder to the inside of the tyre before putting tube in. It prevents snakebites PS. with this setup I haven't had a snakebite in over a year
  22. Does anyone know if the Cascades Trials course will be kept open after the world champs and if the public will be allowed to go ride it?
  23. My Hansom SS. Currently running a 48/18 ratio and with the old style dropouts it works like a charm...
  24. I use Skullcandy, but the bit more expensive ones. Think they were around R450. The sound quality isn't bad (nothing compares to Sennheizer and similar brands), but it's half the price and if you break it and take it to their head office you get 50% off on your next purchase of the same value headphone...
  25. It's an Avid problem... I had a set of Avid Elixer 5's with the same problem. Best advice I can give you is to buy a set of Shimano's (or if you have money burning a hole in your pocket buy Hope) and give the Avid's to someone you really dislike. They will fail completely and some point and land him against a tree, bus etc.
