  1. Speak to Emile at Hunter cycles in Braamfontein. They specialize in retro builds
  2. Awesome thanx guys. I ride SS so strength on the climbs is important, allready working on Klapperkop 3 times a week. My initial goal was the 94.7 in November but a friend is organising a ride from Pta to Magaliesburg (90km one way) for end of June. So I have about 2 months to get fit. It will be a fairly slow pace, around 25km/h. At the moment I can do around 50km without a problem
  3. Hey guys. What type of road training does one do to train for a 100+km ride? And how long does it it? I have very little road experience so all help is appreciated
  4. Personally I believe that secondhand you sell for around 60% of the "new" price minus 5-10% (depending on condition) for each year you've ridden it.
  5. Ok so an update on the bike on a train situation. I spoke to different people and never got a solid answer or the same answer twice. Security guard: Yes bikes are allowed but they have to be covered. (He did not specify how the bike needs to be covered) Call centre lady 1: No bike allowed at all Call centre lady 2: Only a foldable bike is allowed and it has to be in a bike. Random person that overheard me speaking to Call centre lady 1 (I was on campus at the time): Buy a bike bag, put the bike in, security allows "luggage" of most shapes and sizes so they just ignore it. Now the problem comes in: With the cost of a basic bike bag being around R1600 in SA, is it really cheaper to use the train as alternative transport? Second problem is: What do you do with the bag once you get to your train stop?
  6. I agree with the food policy. But I don't get the anti-bike thing. How is roadbike tyres more dirty than the average person's shoes? I would understand if they ban dirty/muddy bikes.
  7. OK awesome thanx guys. @Tumbleweed thanx for posting the link. That is exactly the sort of bag I had in mind so will read through it.
  8. Hey guys. So my question is does anyone take their bikes on the Gautrain? And if so in how and what is the procedure? I've heard that the bike needs to be in a bag, does this bag need to something specific or will a DIY bag work? Spending R1000-R2500 on a bike bag just doesn't make sense to me as it would take around 2 years if commuting per train for me to actually start saving on travel costs instead of taking the car. My idea was to get a piece of fabric, big enough to cover the bike all round, and just close it up at the top with velcro. Any thoughts on this idea?
  9. My new SimpleSam SS, she weighs 8.6kgs...
  10. @Nico in terms of the cramps try move your cleat on the shoe forward or back, I had the same problems but since I moved the cleat no issues!!
  11. Do you have any vids showing you the basics? If not, drop me a pm
  12. Hey guys, We'll be riding in Pmb the weekend of 26 April, pm peach for the details. It will be awesome if we have a decent group ride!! Most of the SA riders started on converted DJ bikes, they are heavier and harder to ride but are also bomb proof, so awesome to learn on! Ps: for those of you waiting for a response from Dylan, I have some bad news. He had a big crash at the argus, broke both thumbs, hurt his shoulder etc. so im not sure when he'll be back at work...
  13. Hey. In terms of a BB I'm not sure. But I'll be able to help you with calipers, they just don't have pads in. Send me your details if you're interested
  14. I used a similar technique. I used an old jean, to cover a Sella Italia SLR. I used white wood glue for the top of the seat and contact adhesive for the sides and bottom. After letting the contact adhesive dried i put some more wood glue on the bottom over the material and plastic just to make sure it stays down. I did find that starting the sticking proses is easier from the middel, and just cut a rough shape of the seat. Final cutting was done after the top was glued, you don't have the risk of cutting a too small piece this way
  15. Awesome batman!!! Hope you get sorted soon!!! Peach is in Maritzburg this weekend, try join him for a trials session.
  16. In Pta, shop around!!!! Bruce-cycles has decent tools but they're pretty pricey!! Solomons (on lynnwood) has fairly cheap tools, I got a chainwhip from them for under R100 and it works like a charm!!! And things like allen keys, go to Midas, you can get a pretty cool set for around R80
  17. You can get into trials by learning the basic skills on a normal MTB. A DJ bike is one way to go if you want to keep the costs down, but it will only take you so far. You can speak to Dylan Victor at CycleLab Westlake, they have a few Echo bikes in stock for less than a third of the price it would cost you to bring in from Tarty. Also there was a 24" streetbike on the hub for sale a while back (Think the guy wanted R10k for it).
  18. @Camelman: Importing from Tarty is D**s expensive in plain English!!! Normally customs are not too difficult on "used" items coming back to SA. I have heard time and again of people buying gadgets overseas, taking them out the box, using it and bringing it back without any issues. So if you ride it their , (it will get bashed a few times), the tyres will wear away etc, so signs of use should be easy to prove. And at some stage you didn't pay duties on gifts (not sure if this still applies), so just get a friend/lecturer to write you a "Good job" note where they "give" you the bike as a gift?
  19. Seeing as everyone is back on the SS threads here is my project. She will be built up over the next 2 months or so: Specs: SimpleSam SS frame FSA Gimondi crankset Shimano Aksium rear wheel Shimano Ksyrium Front wheel Custom Sella Italia carbon rail seat Tri Bar I will be using this frame:
  20. @F111 I can't really give fair comment on this matter. But I do use mtb pedals/shoes on my SS roadbike. As far as I know the road shoes are a bit stiffer than mtb shoes (and of course they are lighter with less tread on the bottom)
  21. Oi, waxing these damn long legs will hurt like hell!!
  22. I shave every now and again. 2 main reasons for shaving: 1) The gf loves it! 2) Riding trials I tend to bash my legs pretty often, not being hairy helps with not getting infections and the cuts heal quicker too. Reasons I don't shave oftem: 1) i get ingrown hair like crazy!!! 2) I get regrowth after 2 days Ps. Im still trying to get the guts to wax
  23. I have never done it before. My gf does the Pump and Shape classes. And they are very good!!! I prefer following a gym program with a partner instead of having someone tell me what to do.
  24. Ok lets start... As they said shoe and pedal combo is extremely important on flats!!! The Saint pedals are pretty good, I prefer nukeproof tho. In terms of shoes Five Ten is about the best money can buy but way to pricey!! I use Adidas or Element Hi8's. Oh and the Crankbrother pedals grip nicely but if you plan on doing anything big the bearings k@k out quick!
  25. We're riding in Pta tomorrow in Hatfield if you're keen on joining. Starting from Springbok bar at 8.30 till around 10.30
