  1. Came Standard on my Tandem. wondering if it worth "upgrading?"

    FSA BB

my tandem has FSA crank and BB, recently bought it and the guy who i bought it from said that he last rode it about two years back. it was standing in Queensbrough in durban. the cables and a few bolts and screws are rusted on it. i just took the cranks off but the BB is an "off Center" one with some other doo-dads and screws there so i left it there.... , when i turned the bb by hand, it was rough but not "Gritty" rough if you know what i mean and it was a bit noisy.... do these need replacing? i have NO idea when last they were done, if ever, and they stood for 2 years..... do the seals etc perish with standing for so long? my prob is budget to fix everything at once as i need new tires as well and possibly new brakes too..... so if i dont have to replace them now it can wait until the next service?? can one use Shimano BB's in there?? or is it FSA for FSA!
  3. Thanks eccentric1. we are about the same weight as you guys. frame has V brakes on at the moment but would like to go disk at the rear then. and then looks like the shimano XT will go on the front.
  4. ok, cause the tandem we were using has 25c. but our combined weight with water and bike comes to just under 200kg. I'm 112kg, so 28c it is. thanks guys!
  5. just bought a tandem and it may need new calipers. what are the best caliper brakes for a tandem. we will need to stop about 180kg!! the tandem can take a disc brake on the rear. would need to change the fork if i wanted to fit to the front.... can some of the Tandem guru's help out here!
  6. HI Guys. just got a tandem and it has 700 23c wheels/tires. the tandem we were using has 700 25c wheels tires. what is the difference in these sizes? are the rims the same size and just different tire size? like a MTB 26" 2.1 or 26" 2.35? TOTALLY new to road riding so let the education begin!
  7. the heat dispensing is the ceramic pistons i think. because i know you can ceramic coat the exhaust manifold and exhaust pipe on a car and the heat is reduced a HUGE amount! almost so that after a drive one can almost touch the exhaust manifold... its that effective! so im guessing the ceramic pistons wont allow the heat to get to the Mineral oil as quickly! with the "fins" on the calipers im sure this will reduce some of the head generated and will cool it quicker.... the rotors are coated Aluminium and have very good Heat dispensing. i know nothing of the ice tec pads though. so i guess for the ICE TEC to be effective one needs to run the ICE TEC set up! i think the ceramic piston is the secret ingredient here... the XO'x dont have ceramic!
  8. Hmmm... the XT Ice tec seem very good... i like that they dont heat up as much... because of the ceramic i suppose?
  9. get some glasses and gooi raak next time! aim for between the eyes!! :)
  10. see... that's were we are wrong... it starts with the small things..... so having that attitude that there are bigger things to worry about is very short sighted... that's how MOST of our water ways and country got polluted... the attitude that "someone" else will clean up after me.... just drive through most towns and cities... its just litter... but hey we have bigger things to worry bout than keeping our environment clean... dont we?? you might be ok with riding/living in a pig sty but i'm not...!!! anyway... there is just NO justification for littering with non Biodegradables ... especially when waste bins have been provided!
  11. do the guys who believe that it is ok to throw orange peels and those items that take longer to decompose do so in your own garden? i mean peel an orange/naartjie/eat an apple and throw the peels/ core on your grass or your drive way....?? ?? my bet is NO you dont........
  12. so im in the market for new brakes as my current Formula K18 are just not stopping me on time.... im keen on the Avid XO from chain reaction (price is great) and i want to pair them with shimano ICE TEC rotors. will the ICE TEC technology in the rotors help with the cooling of the Avids? or must the calipers and pads be used?? im not keen on the mineral oil type brakes and i have had two sets of these mineral oil breaks and ive cooked them and ended with no breaks! used the DOT 5.1 and not had an issue. so now.... to avid and ICE TEC or to something else....?? any suggestions?? but back your suggestion up!
  13. XTC1. what was the response? usually these organizers are SO self righteous and quick to defend! if you can organize an entire event... surely you can organize/have the decency to clean up after..... but better yet... why dont people just not litter and all will be happy!
  14. My gel's and bars are kept in my left pocket on my shirt. when done they go into the middle pocket... this way every thing stays sticky free and i keep my mess to myself! my puncture kit is on a "boot" at the back and bombs/pump are on the bike! i also ride with a camel pack for hydration and i use ALLOT of water and two bottles wont suffice... hence the CP! so i have PLENTY space for empty wrappers! and yeah, what does it take to just put it back where you pulled it out from!!!!! seriously people....!!!! it is probably more effort to take it out than put it back!!!! on the banana peels... discard them OF THE ROAD!!!!! if you must throw them! other wise there were Bins just after the water point to dump them in! but NOOOO.... people just threw them down in the road where we were all riding...... had to play "dodge the banana peel" at most watering points! Im lucky i didnt see anyone littering... cause i DONT keep quiet about this offense!!!
  15. The LITTERING on these races is unacceptable!!! There is NO excuse what so ever! obviously you were carrying that gel/whatever somewhere on you... so put the packet back FFS!!!!!!!! That was the real bummer on the race yesterday (94.7) the gel packets/what-nots/Tarzan-bar packets lying everywhere on the road.... i hope those people who did litter get a cramp SO BIG that it becomes permanent!!!!

  17. i prefer Sram... i went through 3 XT derailures in 6months (just could not keep the settings and they would slip, miss gears and two snaped) and then went to Sram X9 derailure and XO grip shift... after 14months they still change as smooth as the day i got them.... and my riding is just as rough!
  18. But how did it break.....???

ok so island tribe is not quiet Coppertone.... it leaves an oily "glisten" on my skin and slippery hands... its oil based. Coppertone is non oil based and leaves no trace when dry. So back to the Drawing Board...... ( and a R100 fail!)

    SunScreen!

I have tried numerous brands and types and 99.8% of them burn my eyes when i start perspiring! Tropitone doesn't burn but within 20min of riding, its all washed off.. ( i have always been a person who perspires allot! -gross i know) i used another kind that i got from the states (not available locally) cheaper than any local brand and its the bee's business!!!!! but postage cost work out to more than the actual cream!!!!! and then it gets more expensive!!!! So what do you use.....???
