Although the MTB race up there was last held in 2011, so the single-track may not have been maintained. The roads up are to the Vodacom mast.
  2. Pedal Power Association ·Facebook, dated Saturday This week, the local cycling community was shattered by the news of at least five incidents that resulted in the death or injury of cyclists in and around Cape Town. A veteran of many Cape Town Cycle Tours, Dennis Hammer, passed away earlier this week of complications after surgery for injuries that he sustained after an attack in the CBD. Later on in the week, a bike technician that worked at Olympic Cycles, swerved out to prevent colliding with a car door that was opened in front of him and was hit by a vehicle in Claremont. Earlier today, there was a collision between three cyclists and a tour bus on Chapmans Peak Drive. One of the cyclists passed away at the scene of the crash whilst the other was airlifted to hospital and the third sustained lesser injuries. The fourth incident took place along Wellington Road in Durbanville when a cyclist sustained injuries when hit by a truck in a hit and run incident. The fifth incident was reported to have occurred on Bottelary Road where a vehicle collided with a group of cyclists injuring two. The PPA wishes to express our sincere condolences to the families and friends of the cyclists who lost their lives. We wish those that were injured, a speedy recovery. We also issue an urgent appeal to all motorists and cyclists to practice caution and respect on our roads so that we never experience a week like this again.
  3. Is that Old Cape Road across to the R399 or Kom se Pad? Kom se Pad is lovely, but a steeper climb to get up there as far as I recall. You might need cash for a SanParks entry.
  4. I've done similar repairs on hiking shoes with ShoeGoo, and it's still holding. Comparing ShoeGoo to Pratley WondaFix, ChatGPT says: ShoeGoo: Designed specifically for shoe repairs, so it's long-lasting under regular use, rain, and wear. Wondafix: Excellent durability if used on static or non-flexing parts. Over time, flexing joints may weaken. For resticking a sole, especially where flexibility is key, ShoeGoo is your better bet. Pratley Wondafix is a powerful general-purpose adhesive, but it's too rigid for most soles unless the part you're gluing doesn't bend.

  6. I didn't save it -- it was the default route when I used the gravel riding filter on the free version on my laptop, so you should be able to find it. I did see that Google Maps streetview (on the main roads) showed no gates but clear No entry signs on some of those smaller side roads, but those sections could be bypassed with a little more tar. It does seem like going via Napier vicinity and Klipdale would be possible. Suggest you check out https://tracks4africa.co.za/maps/w248111/ too. If you're on Facebook, the guy who runs the Gansbaai Mountain Bike Rides & Routes page could advise on the nicest routes south of the Caledon-Napier road.
  7. Interested to see that Komoot's gravel ride option takes in the lovely Sandy's Glen Pass, but no idea whether all those roads north of the Caledon-Napier road are indeed open.

  12. SANParks - Table Mountain National Park posted 6 May, 7.39 pm · POST FIRE UPDATE: UPPER TOKAI & SURROUNDING TRAILS CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE Following the recent fire in Upper Tokai and surrounding areas, several sections of Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) remain closed until further notice. This includes all hiking trails, horse riding tracks, and mountain biking tracks in Upper Tokai. Silvermine East and West—both Gate 1 (Dam) and Gate 2 (Waterfall)—are also closed, along with all trails leading to Silvermine. Echo Valley, Peak’s Valley, Ou Kraal, Old Boyes Drive, and the Kalk Bay trails are not accessible at this time. Although the fire has been contained, smoldering logs, unstable soil, etc continue to pose a threat. Additionally, the fire has left wildlife vulnerable, without proper cover or forage, and with increased exposure to domestic animals like dogs, threaten their chances of survival. While some areas remain restricted, there are still trails that are open and safe for use. These include the trails at Elsie’s Peak, Trappieskop, Peers’ Cave, Lower Tokai, Noordhoek Beach, and both the northern and southern sections of Table Mountain National Park. More updates will be provided following the conclusion of burnt area assessments and rehabilitation.

  14. I don't suppose you tried Googling "Uswe how to wash", which takes you to the instructions on their website?! https://uswe.com/en-global/care-tips#:~:text=Cleaning hydration bladder, with mild soap and water. Backpack & Vests Care We want you to follow the instructions on the care label for each product. Care labels are typically found inside of the product. If you can’t see it, look again. If you still can’t see it, contact us. The following tips below are also good for keeping the pack in shape and increasing the lifespan of it. After every ride, empty the pack completely and brush clean soiled areas with soapy water. Never put your pack into a washing machine or dryer (only hand wash). The pack fabrics can’t be ironed. Zippers must be kept clean for improved lifetime. To store: close the pack and keep it in a dry, well ventilated place. AND https://uswe.com/en-us/hydration-packs How to clean A Hydration Backpack The packs are bound to get dirty; they are made to be used out in the mud and dirt! Sometimes you might want to give the pack a quick light cleaning. Just empty all your stuff out and use a clean, soft sponge to wipe the interior. When cleaning the exterior, add some soap to the sponge and then rinse it off. If the dirtiness gets out of hand (even we got our standards) you can handwash the backpack in 30 degrees warm water, and ad some soap or detergent if necessary. Try to not chuck them in a washing machine or a dryer as the inner lining protecting the inside of the pack from wetness will get damaged over time. Just hand it upside down and let it dry.
  15. Don't know about the Mayco member but the Premier was checking out the province's gravel offerings over Easter: https://www.facebook.com/windealan/posts/pfbid02TPN5QDywhzstZ9Fnp1jty6tFGLgwtj8uMAfmCyU7L9XUGL2QRUYPQXEBgbwAS2D5l
  16. Great video from Annika Langvad
  17. Nice! English captions need to be turned on obviously for the YouTube video link above: "Bikecheck: 7 pro-bikes from the Cape Epic 2025 – from Nino Schurter to Speed Company!"
  18. Bianca is not tiny -- she's 1.7 m tall. Are you not confusing her with Hayley?
  19. Very interesting, along with those of international riders here, for those who haven't seen it: https://youtu.be/e4kGT47RThQ?si=fU4XHIY11GkfzkLG
  20. Always had a slightly tilted saddle, but have been experimenting with flat due to one hand going numb. Since this is now occurring on 3 different bikes with different set-ups and handlebar rotations, I've realised the problem is likely in my neck. And yes, I've had plenty of bike set-ups! Just watched this video of Epic pro-bikes though and surprised by the radical tilt on Lukas Baum's bike: https://youtu.be/e4kGT47RThQ?si=fU4XHIY11GkfzkLG
  21. Agreed, if it's tilted more than that you'll probably get sore hands from sliding down the seat. If you're sore on the soft bits, try dropping the saddle slightly or changing the fore-aft position.
  22. Banhoek is nice, so is Muratie -- non-technical and shady, with an easier climb -- or the Fish Eagle loop at Bottleray Hills Conservancy, starting at Devonvale Golf Course (permits available from the golf shop).

All South Africans over 18 years old will be required to provide proof of SA ID to qualify for the local rate. From: https://www.sanparks.org/travel/book/useful-information/rates-fees BUT come to think of it, if you're cycling in, you only pay the cycling activity permit as far as I'm aware
