  1. Got that part.just wondering abt the protocol of the following. A normal commute would be around 18km, but what if I did my normal training ride of 40-50km and then went straight to work without going back home. Would the whole distance be considered a commute? 2. what is the protocol for the endomondo challenge if one is to include ones normal morning ride into my commute?
  3. also just started the cycling commute (thrice so far). Am going to try do it on most Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays. Only takes me 30-35 min to get to work which may be quicker than driving, certainly less stress, but 50-55 min to get home.
  4. i know this thread is 4 years old but currently have the same dilemma. Am looking at one of the following wheelsets Easton EC90 SLFulcrum R3Mavic Ksyrium EliteShimano RS81C35Over 4 years wheel technology has changed quite a bit. Any advice at all on the current models?
  5. This old man, he plays two he plays knick knack on my skew..er with a knick knack paddy wack give this dog a bone this Darkhorse comes rolling home.
  6. Dracs, Still a long way to go and another 6 weeks of decent training can certainly get you there. You are 100% right in that Comrades is a mind game. Everyone hurts at 60K, it's just telling your legs and body to keep going.
  7. easily, oceans is an easy marathon and 14k of a little vasbyt. will also be running on a wing & a prayer.
  8. can't comment on the compression socks as I've never used them. Get in a few physio sessions and do the strengthening exercises. Plenty of time still to train for a qualifier and comrades so don't rush back, If you aggravate it to a grade 2 it could be months instead of weeks. When you do come back start small and increase the milage slowly, maybe only running every second day and run only flat routes for the first couple weeks. Got the T-shirt(s).
  9. if it's a small calf tear (grade 1) then you should be able to get on the bike, particularly the IDT / Spinning bike. Do a 60 min tempo session (seated) and you'll maintain a large degree of fitness.
  10. remove 4 x valve caps, insert 4 x small stones, close valve caps. when he returns he'll have 4 flat tyres. a time consuming exercise to remedy with only a single spare.
  11. check Sports photography by Kaz on facebook for photos - you look tired!
  12. Ferret, I believe Westville have their long run (route tester) scheduled for April 17th. There will probably be some clubs running on the 16th and some on the 23/24 too. Westille, Pinetown, Chiltern, Stella, Savages, DHS Old Boys & Queensburgh all usually plan a run and often some clubs band together to assist on the water tables. Most clubs will cater for "outsiders" for a nominal fee. Just ensure you know the route. a few years ago a couple jhb chaps missed the left turn to Camperdown just after Umlass road and started to head for Richmond.
  13. not this year. Route has changed from a point to point to a circular one as it will double as SA champs this year. know anyone down there who could advise on the new route?
  14. i'm sure you could ...there is only so much hurt involved with comrades and everyone hurts from 60k onwards.... you can choose to either do some in training and some on the day or you can choose to do most of it on the day.....your call.
  15. Stretch, a lot of it depends on the type of time you are running. I presume you're aiming for another Bill or quicker so you should be in shape to run all the downs. My comment was aimed more at those looking for a 10:30/11:00 hour run. Your quads will get sore and you'll feel a little sorer afterwards than you did after the up run. You should be fine to run them all but don't race down them and certainly don't race down fields because you're feeling good and there's only 24k to go. Many a runner has raced down fields only to find he walks almost the whole of Pinetown.
  16. If your goal is simply sub 11, let me give you this advice. You may think I'm nuts though. I have run 8 comrades & 4 of them are down runs. The last one was on 350km of training. If there is one thing you learn, it is WALK down the big hills. walk down Polly's walk down Inchanga, walk down Bothas & walk down Fields. I promise you won't regret it.
  17. it's not only in the bush that one sees them. almost rode over a snake crossing the road during the amshova on sunday. had to brake and swerve a little whilst in the bunch at 35kph. almost peed in my pants as I little room to manoeuvre.
