  1. Post of the day dear sir
  2. I think other way round is more true. One big advantage that MTB has over Road, is proper utilization of the pedal stroke. You try mashing the pedals on a technical climb? Maybe if you go putting in some nice mileage it could help you, or biting the bit hard on a hard ride, but that goes both ways.
  3. You forgot that the above, will fit in frames that are smaller, cheaper, stronger, lighter, stiffer.... and more manoeuvrable.
  4. It all comes down to tried and tested for you. What works for me: Breakfast: 2 baked eggs (gebakde eiers) Ride: USN protein bars are nice, but pricey, so only for looooong rides (4-7h). They work really well but feel heavy the first 15min. Jungle Oats bars and Energy bars work equally well , but energy bars are nice in the summer since they don't melt, and JO bars in the winter since they don't get too hard. I bake and eat oats cookies (with dried apricots). Full of energy and they're moist so they don't really dry out. Energy gels are cool but I go for these when I need a quick boost. You could go for sweets too, for when you feel pap. Jelly babies and Liquorice are always winners. Sarmies are good, but only if it works for you. I find those messy on the bike. At the end of the day, get a bite of something of the above in every 30min and you should theoretically stay ok. As for sleep, it's overrated IMO. Obviously it comes down to personal experience, but I've ridden on 3h of sleep and I've ridden on 8h of sleep and sometimes it makes a difference, sometimes I notice zero difference. My usual is 5h and it works for me.
  5. I've only heard of one case where a guy's mount broke, everyone else I've heard of is happy with the mounting.

    Cricket......

I like what Fresh said on 5FM this morning:
  7. Yes but that's a given. Well, almost. I've had a fair amount of decent 4x4 drivers pull off the road when I am on my MTB on a narrow road/jeep track, but there's also been the cases where the a-holes drive 80k/h past you and kick up dust and rocks in your face.
  8. This. It tastes really crap but it works. It really works. And really well.
  9. Boschkop SAPS is not, in my experience, a cyclist-friendly police station. Some years ago they threatened to arrest the whole bunch of us for cycling in a double row (big bunch with the club van behind us) because "our station commander told us to".
  10. I'm going to tell you what everyone else will be telling you Get your tyre pressure right, get on your bike, roll your wheel forward twice (two rotations) while measuring the distance, then half that distance. It should be somewhere around 2180-2190 depending on a)your weight and b)tyre pressure, both which have a rather large impact on the "wheel setting".
  11. It is? I started mtb'ing two months ago and I did 96km today (5h ride).... sure, I lost my legs along the way, but it's a manageable distance.
  12. Polars also get the HR interference. It's a common problem.
  13. SS shouldn't be a last resort. It should be the first option. Go SS
  14. Groenkloof is quite nice. There's a wide variety of trails you can ride there based on how technical you want to go. Lots and lots of rocks and some nice singletrack and jeeptrack to ride. The best advice I can give is to check out the Youtube videos on Groenkloof. The others I haven't ridden yet.
  15. If anyone finds these bastards who dunnit, a friend said I should try out his Martini Henry .577 sometime. I think this is a good reason.
  16. If this is the case then it's a bug in the system. What happens, or is supposed to happen, is when you register the system checks your ID number against the CSA database for the relevant license. If it finds it, you shouldn't be invoiced the R30 for the day license, if it's not found you should be invoiced the R30. But yes, I'd take it up with the organiser. Maybe they will notice that there's a problem.
  17. Yeah I think that is a very stupid thing to do. I'm all for the quick skip when it's perfectly safe to do so, and when it's quiet, [and when the bunch is small enough to do it safely) but I've seen all too many cars appear out of nowhere and you don't want to be ushering a bunch across a red light then. As you said, it makes for a bad reputation.
  18. Grabbed from Google Maps quickly. -25.772021, 28.416833
  19. We traced a laptop with a datasim the other day, we had someone who knew someone who got someone to get us the tracking.... even with the coords (which we had updated a few times) we couldn't find the thing. The only accurate way of finding a phone is via its gps, as with the iPhone/Android phones, and that's only if the "findmydroid",etc software is functional under whatever circumstances.
  20. The bike park as in the Boschkop MTB trail? (never been there before) Edit: Since you say it's by Rosemary Hill, so it's where the little stretch next to the N4 comes out onto the RMH road?
  21. Mine sucked yesterday morning, at 7am the sun was unbearable
  22. You should let your eyes relax a bit more and scan more than just the area in front of you. I wear contacts, and I have Rudy Project Racing Red Photochromic lenses and my eyes are fine on mtb rides of 3h+ still. Polaroids are a no-no for cycling. You can't see the water/glass with it, as Polaroids take away the glare caused by it. You can try going for the grey lenses, but be careful that you don't go too dark, as you can't see when you hit heavy shade all of a sudden.
  23. Glad he's not hurt. It sucks at the best of times. Scary for me too, I ride out there most days of the week. Long stretches of road where there's me, myself and I and only the odd farm-worker or vehicle.
  24. This. It's your best bet for using with a trailer. Should also be cheaper than having your towbar modified.
