  2. Driving a car without a helmet is about as dangerous as cycling without an helmet. However motorists feel invulnerable in their cages, wheras cyclists feel vulnerable.
  3. Evrey month my wife takes out her menstral cycle for a ride, as she still has not got the me no porsche problem yet. And there I thought a period was a small black dot denoting the end of a sentence. But some women tell me it is almost a life sentence itself.
  4. Neee, F*K, ek kannie meer nie.
  5. Psychologists have found that people tend to discount danger when their is an illusion that your behaviour can influence random acts. In this case cycling towards a fast moving car (60km/hr), that is under dubious control, will not give me enough time to evade danger. The split second between OMF and impact will be so short that it is academic, furthermore this time will be reduced as I will be moving towards the vehicle. In the end the cyclist will not be able to react fast enough even if he sees the car careening towards him/herself. Cycling in the same direction as the vehicle will ensure that I do not see my murderer, but may ensure that he sees me and may give him enough time to avoid me, as I will be traveling in the same direction and therefore his relative speed to me will be less than in the previous case. That one second may actually save my life. Secondly, as I have wheels and are moving n the same direction, if my wheels are not caught under the vehicle I may get away with an acceleration or"bump" instead of a "Splat". (changing direction is a bastard especially if you have to stop and reverse) But obviously people prefer to see the gillotine blade drop, gives them a sense of control in their death,

  7. Mind you, the Elizabethans had so many words for the female genitals that it is quite hard to speak a sentence of modern English without inadvertently mentioning at least three of them. -- (Terry Pratchett, alt.fan.pratchett)
  8. safest way to travelhttp://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Guardian/Pix/pictures/2009/7/6/1246899481571/Matt-Lucas-and-David-Wall-001.jpg A UK study found that motorists give "lady" cyclists an additional 30cm of road when passing. The researcher (being male) actually dressed up in pink and clipped a blonde wif/ ponytail under his helmet to simulate being a lady. Maybe we should be tumbleweed to replicate the experiment with his magneta boa?
  9. Firstly a bicycle is not a car of equilivant mass to a car, and secondly a bicycle has wheels on it unlike a brick wall. I have been nudged by a bus travelling 20km/hr when I was travelling 19km/hr and I felt a little "bump" and accelleration. If however, I was travelling in the opposite direction I would have been dead. In a similar experiment, I have had a friend cycle behind me at a similar speed and then tap me on the back as he past me (we were going around 30km/hr at the time). Later that week as a I came around a corner a pedestrian stepped in front of me, walking slowly (I was traveling at about 20km/hr) needless to say the pedestrian hit the ground hard and I followed her). I challenge you to replicate the experiment, only please travel in the oppossite direction to the bus first. . (it will save you having to do the second part of the expeiment) and will prove conclusively that your post is irrelevant ) ps which hospital is on your speed dial?
  10. riding against the traffic is not going to save you either. car speed + bike speed = speed of impact so 100km+40km = 140km against 100km-40km=60km Safer would be to take the ipod out of your ears, stop cycling abreast and avoid single carriage ways in rush hour traffic. Obviously, this will reduce your risk, but there will always be an idiot in a car on your unlucky day. But then they may also be lightening as well.
  11. Road = car pavement = bicycle bushes = pedestrian Remember every motorist is a pedestrian without his car.
  12. and this is why I returned to running and took up sailing
  13. Conrad Scholtz, 6 (or is it 7) times world champion xtriathlon (kick LA's but as well) The koekemoer family (Attie, dad mom and the rest at Ride Mag- that includes Adel Tait) Jaco Strydom, (RIP) who planned and road many cycling adventures, for making cycle tourism possible Barry McCallum, (Tumbleweed) for being himself- legend (His sidekick Stockton (RIP)) Grant Usher for being Mr Single speed, and getting the movement rolling Labuschagne brothers - Johan and David are real gentlemen. 14. After reading all the posts. I realise that cycling has become too competitive. Cyclists (if you can all the competitiojn crazed bunch that) are always looking to compare themselves against others. Does he have a better bike, wheels, kit, sponosr, wife, children than me? Can he cycle faster, more elegantly ext than me. This is the route to being constantly unhappy. This also leads to the question "Do they have weight catergories" and an attempt to define oneself as a fat, skinny, round, VO2 max, ext cyclist. It is all an attempt to cut the pie so small that everyone gets a bit. Hey I won the hetrosexual, male, underweight, jewish, blue eyed arian race on saturday..... So how many were competiting? No only me because I was the only Jew not in the Synogogue............. Although Lance (he who may never be mentioned), did say it was not about the bike. BUt in a bike race the bike determined the catergory. You either ride a MTB bike, A road bike, A track bike, A cyclecross bike ext, because that is what is being raced. Another trend is people are "racing" for "rewards" and recognition before they are competent to cycle in the declared discipline. THere are many cases where guys on road bikes cannot even cleat in properly, or ride in pace line, yet they want to "race". (In mtb terms, they guy doesn't know what a single track is, but want to race his 29er and complains that the roads are not wide enough and the trails are too technical). I ask that before you "race" get to enjoy being competent on your bike. Even better seak mastery before speed.
  15. I disagree with Singspeedguy. Carbon SS bikes pose no risk at all to their riders. Simply because if you use carbon on a single speed you are a poser (and possibly also drive a BMW and live in the Northern Suburbs of Joburg) and do not have the leg strength to break the frame. So you will be safe on your carbon bit. Just don't let a real ss rider touch it. ever.
  16. IF weight is your handicap, take up a sport where weight is an advantage like................. Finn sailing (weight class 80kg-130kg) weight lifting? wrestling? boxing? rugby? eating? I don't complain I am to small and light to play rugby, so you shouldn't whine about being overweight for cycling. Don't entry a donkey in a horse race, and don't entry a race horse into a camel race.
  17. Interesting that she has four parabat wings. For a Country where until recently women weren't allowed out of the house and were definitely not allowed to read either. Me thinks there was some fast tracking going on here.

  19. maybe scrap metal merchants don't want plastic?
  20. this is sad. What heathen strips a TT bike and leaves the carbon disc wheel?

    Sailing

Had my first sail on a 1970's finn. The boat works you even in light weather. Some cleats need replacing and then I can start learning again. Even though I am underweight, it is still more challenging and fun than the laser. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_83C0d9qWNoU/S-xw9KzrZGI/AAAAAAAAR5U/Sx2kDNIbTvw/s1600/caleb-paine-sailing.jpg not me or the boat but a nice pic.
  23. a second hand bike?
  24. don't you have friends with such wheels? I suppose not one that will let you use his then? I have not heard of such a scheme but ask your LBS, this might become a money spinner
