  1. After a series of 'unfortunate events' I realised I probably should invest in some mtb knee guards. I have about R1000 to spend on a pair. Will I realistically find something for that amount? Nothing fancy, or high tech. just something that will keep me out of the orthopedist's room
  2. I think you've just hit the nail on the head. I didn't even think of that. Off-bike I definitely do not have a neutral foot position or gait! wow, thank you.
  3. I dont find them too narrow no. I tried lacing up tight, and loosely. As others have said, I might have too much toe movement up front
  4. I just switched out the original insoles with a thicker gel pair I had lying around. They seemed to fit fine without, just roomy in the toe. I'll pad the toe area a bit to minimize movement and see how it goes. otherwise back to my takkies
  5. yep. just the toe box is roomy, I can wiggle my toes upwards and sidewards, the rest of the shoe fits comfortably, no excessive space in front or behind
  6. going to pay more attention next ride. there's quite a bit of toe room, so I might be doing that. gonna stuff a sock in there
  7. Great idea, didnt think about that. I'll do some creative padding on the inside
  8. I bought a pair of five ten impact vxi shoes recently. I ride with wide platform pedals so good weight distribution. I also tried riding with those entry level cage type pedal. The shoe is a good fit, right size so no excessive front to back movement, but with lots of toe room, so my toes are not getting squished. I tried with and without laces through the last eyelet. laces tight, laces loose. different insole, different thickness socks. invariable after about an hour's ride my little toes start going numb, and eventually the entire outside of my foot is numb. moving my foot position forward or backwards during pedaling makes no difference. switched to my trail running shoes and no numbness. help!
  9. *stands up**nervous cough* I'm Anine and I harass innocent Flora in the late afternoons. http://imageshack.us/a/img690/3104/img7808z.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img259/5291/img7804j.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img402/6035/img7722l.jpg
  10. James Wilson's articles are what finally convinced me to go back to flat pedals. big +1
  11. you dont find with these dual pedals that you accidentally clip in when you least want it?
  12. There's a heavy air of sadness across the social networks. Last night's pictures of the ghost bike on the nelson mandela bridge had me all weepy dammit! It has been an eye opener and a reminder of my own mortality. If this can happen to a pro, then I'm so much more vulnerable. I've re-deployed the funds I've been saving for a road-bike elsewhere and I'm changing my mtb training rides to cut out as much tar as possible, it just aint worth it
  13. apparently the FiveTens have some newfangled grippy rubber soles that stick like sn*t to a wool blanket. the freerider type shoes have more flexible soles which give you better feel while the impact low type shoes are stiffer, clunkier and give a more sterile feel
  14. I'm not a brave rider and not being able to get my foot out of the pedal is a huge mental issue for me. I have had nasty falls when I screech to a halt after running out of guts, and then cant get a foot down. My diadoras and time pedals also do not offer the most stable of surfaces when unclipped either, especially when dusty, muddy or wet, which just compounds my nervous problem. So I walk. a LOT. it sucks. The next person to tell me to HTFU, 'just get on with it' or 'attack it with confidence' while I do not trust my equipment is going to get a shift kick to the shin with the business end of said diadoras I'm ordering a pair of fivetens and nukeproofs from dial'd and will stick the times back on for flat/road riding
  15. they told me the sizing is spot on but that the shoe runs a bit narrow
  16. Nukeproof Neutrons. best bang for your buck.
  17. I was chatting to the guys from dial'd bikes about exactly this issue and they advised that the normal soled shoes are more comfortable with flat pedals than those that are cleat compatible. apparently the clipless shoes have a hard insert for cleat installation, and that is not as comfortable on flat pedals. but drop them an email. I found them to be extremely helpful in answering all my questions
  18. I have shimano deore dual control shifters on my bike... and I detest them. what is involved with replacing them with the deore rapidfire shifters? will I have to replace the brake levers too?
  19. @hdp_gmx it was on a little shelf next to the dispensary at this specific checkers
  20. plusssz, I saw it in checkers today.
  21. He saw the pedestrian, he took steps to avoid him by switching lanes. The pedestrian then jumped into him. As the OP said, he could have given him a wider berth or made some noise. He didnt, he realised he made a mistake. 'Get a life and slow down man' is neither a helpful nor necessary comment to make
  22. ouch to both you and the pedestrian! Most of my training rides include dirt shoulders and other footpaths with plenty of pedestrian traffic. What I've learned is that I need some kind of recognisable warning signal when approaching pedestrians from behind. shouting or whistling isn't reliable but a bell works well, specially one that sounds like a 'bicycle' bell. warn well in advance and repeatedly because if you approach from behind, chances are they'll stop, turn to look back, process and then only move out of your way. if startled, pedestrians seem to always jump forward or in the direction they were travelling in initially. I've never seen them jump back towards the way they came.
  23. time atac! seriously bombproof. I have never had any issues with them, ever, in any kind of conditions. even with my cleats worn shiny smooth, they still trucked along. I also ride with mine on and off road

I thought I was hallucinating when I started hearing gospel music on the N14!
