  1. No need for apologies. I got all ready, fire, aim at people without knowing the real story myself (irony at it's purest). If anyone should apologise it should be me. My bad everyone!
  2. That's why I added the "socially" - some amazing achievements in many other fields of course. It is, however, impossible to find a positive to match centuries of apartheid, colonies, plundering, slave trade etc.
  3. Sadly I think that is true - white guys in the age group 50-70 have not served us very well as role models. Between kiddie fiddling priests, gropey rapey hollywood stars, underage hooker providers, the old national party, locker room heros, scientists and authors blatantly stealing female work etc etc etc we don't have a lot to be proud of on the social front. Edit: This is not the thread for this kinda talk so here is a meme as an apology.
  4. Doh. It seems I am out of date. Edit: While I do think most of us whites are a little unaware of our "we ruled the world for for centuries" inherent attitude equating "white" directly to arrogance, ignorance, oppression etc is ridiculous.
  5. Or you could skip all the old white guy butt hurt and read the actual story: https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-coca-cola-safrica-idUSKBN2A60BM
  6. Come on Froomedawg! The guy is old and wise enough to know his body and his numbers/potential. I still have faith but man it is getting tougher the more he say he is ready and on target and doing well and hitting numbers but performing like a pack dog. That said I'm still gonna be rooting for the man come July!
  7. Flared gives you the best of both worlds. Narrow at the top and inline with your shoulder width for comfort but wide at the bottom to help with technical riding.
  8. If you're keen to learn more about how energy systems work I'd highly recommend this e-course on coursera.org Science of Exerciseby University of Colorado Boulder I think it was $50 and you get a cool certificate to hang on the wall. It dispels a lot of these stupid myths that people keep perpetuating around fat loss and fad diets.
  9. Here is a graph to illustrate RocknRolla's advice. At low aerobic power you should be able to burn fat all day (as long as you have fat) with very little carb use. As you ride harder and harder you use more and more carbs and less and less fat. With training you can change the fat and carb curves a little.
  10. The overriding constant is this thread is that the time for us versus them is over. As long as people keep pointing fingers at the "other" in order to minimize their own responsibility we all lose. We can probably carry on as is and those of us in the over 40 category will not see radical change but our children will and their children will see massive global change due to our over consumption coupled with our lack of will to change. The time is now - hunter or not meat eater or not. Fortunately social pressure/change has made being a vegan/vegetarian/minimal meat eater socially acceptable. In the 2 years this thread has been going we've gone from people posting pics of their meat and saying how much they enjoy it to decent debate. Win win.
  11. 100%. Better brakes make a bike faster (or, alternatively, slower for less time).
  12. Do you enjoy it though? Does killing pleasure you? Is there a rush? I tried it all and all I felt was shame and regret.
  13. This is one thing that just about anybody who cares about the planet's future can agree on. Any reduction in meat consumption is good for the planet regardless if you're a hunter or not.
  14. Shimano: We make pads that use an aluminium fin to remove heat Parlee: We make covers to keep your brakes nice and warm in winter :-)
  15. Most of what you describe there is something everyone should be doing - using the planet less. Kill less insects, animals, birds - use fewer phones - driving less - be a more considerate human being - your children will thank you in 50 years :-) Specifically the hunting though - why do you want to stalk and kill animals? Where is the pleasure/reward? It's a question that I'm quite curious about - as an example here in Denmark we are supposed to be the best of humanity in terms of social mobility, minority rights, equality, safety, governance etc but Denmark's attitude to animals is not great (despite having a high vegan/vegetarian incidence). Hunting is also pretty popular among both sexes. I find it a little strange. What is man's fascination with killing animals personally?
  16. Hunting, climate change, health etc are all part of the vegan/vegetarian lifestyle so I think it belongs on here. I'm all for constructive chats and I think an honest public debate about it would benefit everyone - no need to take it to PM.
  17. Me - I don't understand it. If the thrill is in the hunt then why not just take a great picture? Do you really feel pleasure/thrill/euphoria from killing something? Especially is you are only going to take shots you are almost certain to make. Some of my friends are hunters and I fully understand that a whole industry has developed around hunting but where is the fun in making something else suffer/die? Surely as a species we have moved on from that? Hunting used to be a necessity but now we can have "bounty" 24 hours a day from a multitude of shops. There is also the "animal lover" issue. You make money by raising animals purely to be killed but a portion of your revenue goes to wildlife preservation to you get to call yourself an animal lover? That makes no sense.
  18. I'm fairly sure the Ostro is disc brake only....
  19. I rarely hit 60km/hr on the road. Traffic light and stop streets means there's constant scrubbing of speed. MTB I'm descending at 89km/hr hitting the brakes hard and bringing a change in velocity around 10m/s. It's all about the kinetic energy being absorbed over time which is work done per second. There's more of it in an mtb by virtue of constant higher speeds. Anecdotal evidence is not science :-)
  20. Agreed but his initial premise is that because road bikes brake from 60 to 0 and mtbs only brake from 30 to 0 road bikes need more heat dissipation... In general I agree with the guy (and Froomey) but some of his base information is questionable.
  21. Has anyone here ridden swisstop rotors and pads? I haven't but on paper they look like they're nowhere near DA in terms of technology and weight.
  22. Free market principle. If someone super lowballs me for an item you can bet they are not getting a reply. If someone offers me close to the asking price and wants to pick up same day he'll get a pretty swift reply. This whole dibs, compulsory reply, more rule culture is completely unnecessary - if a seller and a buyer find common ground a deal will happen. If not it won't. We don't need rules/etiquette guides/rants etc.
  23. I think this guy missed the word "mountain" in MTB if he thinks mtbs only brake from 30 to 0.....
  24. Democracy rules and all that... What's the general feeling? Has this thread developed a following big enough to keep the current title or would it be better off with the suggested title?
