  1. I bought a Camelbak. Walked in, selected it, paid for it and walked out ..... end of story. Took half an hour and only 1 trip to Finish Line Cycles. Guess I buy locally to save all the trouble .... but certainly not to save money though!
  2. I ride a motorcycle and a bicycle, so much so that I have not even been in a car for over 2 weeks The other morning at about 6:30 am I was heading towards JHB on my Kawasaki and as we approached the robot at the Illiondale intersection rhe traffic was already starting to back up so I positioned myself between the two lanes and noticed two cyclist (1 mtb + 1 road) ahead who were riding single file but in the middle of the lane. It wasn't a problem as they were travelling at the same speed as the traffic. However, the road starts to go uphill. Naturally they slowed down and moved left but not into the emergency lane and then started riding abreast. As I was next to a car (on my left) we approached the cyclists and the driver moved over to give to cyclists space. She almost hit me and I came within millimetres of hitting the car on my right. She not stop although she did say sorry. I then got into the left lane and intended telling them to stop riding like they own the road but by then I was too far ahead. I'm convinced they were the cause of the traffic tailback. At this point thee is a dedicated turning left lane But I would rather have 100 cyclists riding like they own the road than 2 taxis!! Everyone needs to relax a bit and think about what they are doing.
  3. The mountainbike route is impassable .... I tried riding thee today....water, water, water everywhere.
  4. Seeing as though she has a recorded fainting episode, I assume she was banned from holding a licence. There is a car like mine in Bethal (well it was caught speeding there) and the stupid cops want me to prove I wasn't there. Only I know I wasn't there and I sure as hell don't know where I was at 11:17 on the 5th of August.
  5. Another potentially nasty injury awaits those who engrave a nice mark around their seatpost .........
  6. With regards to where stolen bikes go. I've got a friend (aquaintance - OPC also knows him) who bought a full susp Schwinn from an African gentleman he saw riding it on the road. I saw aimilar person riding a Giant with Fox fork near the airport, complete with his airport bib. When my bike was stolen from Kyalami, about a year later the Polar was handed in at Cajees Southgate/dale for repairs. Because it was still registered to me, Polar phoned me to ask what happened as it was beyond repair. Cajees wouldn't give me any details of the person who handed it in and showed absolutely no interest in my story .... I will never support Cajees. If they are the last bike shop on the planet I'll take up running rather than give them a cent.idrive2010-01-04 05:07:15
  7. I was hospitalised with a serious brain injury after a crash where I iwasn't wearing a helmet .......... a car crash!! There is a much greater risk of suffering a head injury in a fall from a horse than from a bicycle. I digress I do wear a helmet, but not all the time. Believe me, as a former superbike racer, Arran Brown does understand the risks, but like me, he's also old enough to make his own decisions .... but was he breaking the law?
  8. I found some nice rides, dirt roads mainly, on the side near all the resort complexes opposite Deneysville. Had no maps, no gps, just a desire to get out and ride!!
  9. Two dead on a tandem - evidently they were hit by a truck on the N2.
  10. Believe me! the pilot is thankful the cycle event hadn't started.
  11. I hear a cyclist got hit by an aeroplane near Rand Airport this morning??
  12. This was on the Wild Dog forum I was on the G450X and all of them on Quads. So we parked at the Engen garage on the corner of Nellmapius and Boeing and set off towards Kempton Park on the gravel road that eventually turns into a 2-track path. Initially I had my reservations being the only 2-wheeler between all the quads, because with last night's rain it was quite soggy. But it turned out that they go slower http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/Smileys/default/tongue.gif So Jurie lets me pass a short distance into the 2-track path and I was creating a nice gap between myself and the group when I saw two guys about 100m away waving at me to get my attention. I immediately saw that they were cyclists by the way they were dressed and also suspected that there was a problem looking at the distress on their faces. They told me that they were just attacked and their bicycles stolen and they pointed me in the direction of the highway, which was about 1km to my left. I immediately turned into the veld trying to locate the criminals, at the same time wondering profusely what on earth I would do when I actually find one/them! I was soon joined by the guys on the quads and before long they started zooming into a specific spot. As I was approaching the scene, there was no mistaking what was happening. They found the one #^#$%@ and were kicking and beating the living $#!+ out of him. From the uniform, it was apparent that this was one of the road construction workers - the ones with the blue overalls with the yellow bands across the legs. So after priming the suspect for conversation, one of the guys tied a rope around his wrist and told him to show us where his buddy was. He pointed and ran towards the highway and we gave chase. Not easy to scout while riding in the veld with rocks and holes lurking in the grass... So this morning I met up with a friend of mine and three of his friends for a lekker early off-road outride. I was on the G450X and all of them on Quads. So we parked at the Engen garage on the corner of Nellmapius and Boeing and set off towards Kempton Park on the gravel road that eventually turns into a 2-track path. Not easy to scout while riding in the veld with rocks and holes lurking in the grass... http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/Smileys/default/shocked.gif As I approached the road (a slipway of some sorts), I spotted the other %@#$% and started chasing him, but he got to the fence before I did. One of the quad guys joined up with me and we went over the road into a construction yard between the slipway and highway. Once again he went through a fence and we had to go around again. Then he crossed the highway and we took an overpass, only to lose the $#%$@ in thick vegetation on the other side. We eventually gave up and went back to the place where the @$#%^# cleared the first fence and backtracked our way towards the general area where we started from. By this time both of us were praying to at least get the stolen goods back since we did not manage to return with a prisoner. I just could not accept that the @#$%# will come back later to pick up his loot. It was like searching for a needle in a hay stack, with the grass varying from knee to hip height. But soon enough our prayers were answered and we found the other bicycle, the one victim's shoes and his backpack. At that moment a police bakkie showed up with the one victim in the back and after loading the stuff we went back to search for the other riders. After meeting up with them, we realized that the #$%^$# that were beaten up got away in the commotion when we chased the second @#%^^#. So no prisoners, just the victims reunited with they property. And somewhere some construction worker missing a few teeth and sporting a moer-of-a-lot of bruises. Apparently their modus operandi is to lie flat in the grass next to the road. When they see/hear cyclists coming, they jump up and hit them with a stick. Fortunately the cyclists wore caps, because the @#@%$% kept hitting them over their heads, but the one guy had a huge bruise on his arm where he tried to deflect a blow. I'm not sure whether the criminals will try the same with motorcyclists. When we ride off-road, we at least wear body armour and helmets, but a stick across the face at speed will potentially dismount you. So this is just a warning to be vigilant in that area - specifically while the road construction is underway. And to never, ever ride alone.
  13. I've read most of the utter meaningless drivel on these seven pages, but for the record I think the original post by GoLefty was well written and humorous. It only takes a small group of ill-disciplined cyclists to give other road users a good reason to dislike all cyclists. The same applies to motorcyclists and truck drivers. On a personal note I believe road rules MUST be obeyed by everyone, including pedestrians and mountainbikers who ride through private property. I support GoLefty!!
  14. so are these wheels so much cheaper at retail outlets outside SA that one con import them i.e. pay freight costs, duties, vat etc and still sell them at less than the 'sole agent' can when he buys them for the same as any other retail agent around the world?
  15. Whoa .... stop the bus coz I'm confused. Why would Mavic allow someone else to buy stock directly thereby bypassing the local agent. Does this mean the term 'sole agent' means diddly-squat??
  16. I find it quite sad when people have to cheat to beat me ..... I see cheats at almost every mtb race. I remember talking to motorsprt person near the halfway at the Walkerville race and then pulling away from him only to catch him again going up the hill to the finish .... he never did answer my question.
  17. hope the R60 000 copier at least comes with a spell or grammar check feature........ idrive2009-11-24 09:05:11
  18. Imagine everything gets clogged with mud, gears don't shift etc, what impression will that give a prospective buyer. If you could control the bikes and give every rider a clean bike to start with .....
  19. okay!! "Fair fa' yer honest, sonsie face, Great chieftain e' the puddin' race! Aboon them a' ye tak your place, painch tripe or thairm: Weel are ye wordy o' a grace as lang's my arm." idrive2009-11-22 08:40:25

    Praise due

Today I was in my car and I stopped at a traffic light that was red ..... I'm sure someone will sing my praises because I did something I'm supposed to do!!
  21. So... Cyclists are traffic too! Then isn't it time they started respecting the rules of the road, like riding single file, stopping at stop streets & traffic lights and generally not riding as though they own the roads!
  22. Eish .... which CR Swart bridge - railway? I usually come down from Monument, turn rt into CR Swart then left into Kelvin and past Festival Mall.
  23. Forgive me, but why would your insurance company pay for your mates car when it gets stolen. Surely his insurance should pay......or are you in the habit of insuring cars for friends?
