  1. Cradle has road and offroad. There is not a lot of car traffic in the Cradle, and a huge number of cyclists, so provided they don't ride like idiots (ie. stay in the cycling lane) there will be no problem with regards to their safety. For a new rider, just doing the 28k loop from Valverde will be a massive challenge. The Cradle is NOT flat. Or Go to Kyalami late afternoon during the week. 4.2k's per lap, about 50m of climbing per lap. No cars at all, but a tough ride. 4.2k's at Kyalami will feel like 10k's to someone who doesn't have a lot of leg strength.
  2. If the furthest they have ridden is 20km, then training at Suikerbos is a really bad idea. They will be lucky to make it up the first climb. They are going to kaaaaak. Make sure the paramedics are on speed dial, for the few areas where you may get reception. Not a good plan imo. Rather take them to the Cradle, do the Valverde loop (28km with about 350m of climbing per lap)
  3. Ask JB, he will probably tell you the limiting factor is not the braking surface, it is usually the number of spokes the wheel has. Less spokes means a lighter, but less durable wheel. Personally, I have never had a wheel that has worn out it's braking surface, but I have had several that crack where the spokes attach to the rim. I like light wheels, so I accept they won't last as long.
  4. Lets hope that suitably qualified people locate it and get it moved to a safe area, before some or other ignorant bonehead kills it.
  5. If this is a new version of the old "name and shame" threads, please put me out of my misery and kill me now. If someone pisses you off, and you want to identify them, just DO IT.
  6. Please excuse the pun, but he is taking you for a ride. Kick his butt to the kerb. You sound like a social cyclist, as most of us are. There is ample info on the internet, and on forums such as this one, to do it yourself ~ and it won't take a year to see progress.
  7. This advice is spot on, and has never caused me any problems. Wrt using Sunlight liquid, I've been using it for years on cars and bikes. Never had a single problem with it damaging the finish. I suspect that those who have had problems maybe don't rinse the bike properly after washing. KISS ~ prepsol, rinse, wash, rinse, dry, lube. Done.
  8. Correct. And some will say the durability will be Tiagra > 105 > Ultegra > Dura Ace. All will do the job. 105 will not break the bank, do anything you want it to do, and last a very long time for the average Joe.
  9. Hope he/she is ok, that is a really fast section. A crash there is going to be hard and very painful. It would be interesting to know how long they waited for medical attention, Suikerbos is pretty desolate midweek, and cellphone reception is dodgy at best.
  10. Sounds like the driver has an issue or two with cyclists. Finding him is the easy part, prosecuting him is another story. With our wonderful judicial system, he will probably walk away with barely a slap on the wrist. Finding him and cracking his skull might sound like a good idea, but it really isn't. That will probably be rewarded with a few nights behind bars.

  13. Simple logic says that there is no point getting upset with motorists. If you cannot contain your frustration, then you have a serious problem, because abusive motorists will never change their ways. I firmly believe that the vast majority of motorists are law abiding citizens who do not deliberately go out to harass or injure cyclists, it's the minority that cause the problem. And the same applies to cyclists. The majority do what they can to foster good relations with other road users by riding responsibly, but there is always a small group who behave badly and irritate motorists. That's life. Accept it.
  14. Maybe put some of that 20k wax on the cassette. If it's good enough to protect an Audi, it should do a fine job on the cassette as well
  15. I found a Racetec chip at the track last night ~ the bracket is broken so it must have fallen off someone's bike. Anyone who's lost a chip there, or knows of a lost chip, let me know.
  16. Yes. You can mix and match any ratio on Shimano cassettes. I'm talking road cassettes ~ not sure about the cassettes the dirty people use.
  17. Very true. It depends a lot on riding style.
  18. Yip, you have your wild animals, and we have ours on the road. Some of ours behave much worse than yours.
  19. Also bear in mind if it is Shimano, you can combine the two cassettes ie make a 11-27, so you don't lose the benefit of the 11 on the flats. Once again, the group won't wait while you are spinning in your 12 on the flats while they are cruising on an 11
  20. Changing the cassette will be much cheaper than changing cranks. Using a 27 will make a slight difference, but try to work your way back to a 25 or even a 23 as soon as possible. The group isn't going to wait while you spin up the hills in your 27....
  21. Getting municipal approval for something like this is nearly impossible. Too much red tape. It falls into the same category as potholes ~ they are supposed to fix them, but don't, then when you fix them yourself they threaten you with all sort of legal issues.
  22. Easy to fix. Step 1: Get rid of the mountain bike. Step 2: Shave those hairy pins. Step 3: Get a road bike. Problem solved.
  23. The way I understand the news reports, Alonso is the face and Ferrari will be writing the cheque. If that's the case, they are going to want their name somewhere. Not too many orange Ferrari's floating around out there..

    D2D

In my opinion, no. My 94.7 time has always been between 5 and 10 minutes faster than my D2D time. Didn't do D2D this year, but conditions looked tough.

    D2D

It's either my imagination, or the cold snap over the weekend kept D2D numbers down this year. I was training in the Cradle, opposite direction to the race, and it looked to me like there were maybe 1000 riders in total. I'm pretty sure its normally about 1500 for the long distance. It was interesting to watch the race from the "other side", looked like some of the guys were suffering badly.
