  1. So effectively A to E are going to form one huge group of around 2000 riders until Smitswinkel. I thought last year was a stuff up, this is going to be MUCH worse. Get ready for fun, kids. Knee and elbow pads are optional.
  2. They go flat out from the start. I've started A and B in previous years, never once has any mercy been shown over the first 9k's. After that it regroups a bit, but for most the damage is done and recovery is impossible. Also don't forget a very tough finish, just in case you haven't cramped enough by that stage. In you are not in tip top shape, expect to say goodbye to at least half of the A group within 2 k's of the start.
  3. That's the biggest problem with home gardens. If you don't collect rainwater, or have a strong borehole, the water cost might be higher than the value of the yield. Growing vegetables should be seen more as a health option than a cost saving, because once you add up all the costs ~ soil prep, fertiliser, pest control, water, etc ~ the produce will cost more than the shop bought equivalent
  4. Lots of responses in favour of the Edge 500, and I agree for cycling, I use one and it's great. But for running, how would you use it?
  5. It's closed until 14 Jan.
  6. ....and then when he joined Sky he changed his ways and became a choir boy in his spare time.
  7. But don't worry, he did it all by himself, none of the other team members knew anything about it. Yeah, right.
  8. Within cm of you inside the cycling lane? Or outside of it?
  9. You can probably save about 2k buying the Game special, but considering that an average hospital visit for major head trauma will cost much more, and possibly cost you your life, is it worth it? Economise somewhere else, buy the best head protection you can afford. In the case of helmets, I firmly believe that expensive brand names are better at doing the job than the cheapies.
  10. 2012 - R490 including T shirt and fleece jacket - good deal. Loved it. 2013 - ASG events "test run" - R580 including T shirt. Warning bells starting to ring. 2014 - ASG "we have control" - R720 including T shirt. No thanks. 2015 - R1000? Please do tell how, despite offering less, overall costs have increased by 47% in 24 months?
  11. Out of Zumaland, and a new bike. Lucky guy.
  12. Why is there a knife lying in the road? They should have used it on the drivers nuts.
  13. That same passport will soon make it's mysterious way into his murderous hands and he will be gone. Watch this space.
  14. Assos for my Ass. Nothing compares. Worth every cent.
  15. I'd be interested to know details of a few of them. Especially those who got a puncture and claimed for a defective tube, or got charged a 5% handling fee and had it refunded. Any examples come to mind?
  16. If the shop policy is 5% on returns, which the owner waives upon complaint, then I don't see the problem. To me, it sounds like a case of hypersensitivity on the part of the customer. Then, my other hub favourite ~ the CPA. Every second post refers to this or that being covered by the CPA, as if it is a magic bullet, which it isn't. Claiming against a supplier based on some or other clause in the CPA will be a long, frustrating and probably very expensive procedure when time and effort are taken into account. I have not heard of a single person who has successfully claimed something from a supplier using the CPA.
  17. I beg to differ.
  18. Most of our road races are suitable for beginners, exceptions being mainly the stage races (Kremetart, Jock, Panorama etc). If you are worried about the profile or difficulty of some of them, enter the short distances to see how it goes. Don't enter too many, you are just going to tire yourself out, and it can become boring to do too many. Do the bigger early season races (Berge & Dale, Dischem, Emporers etc), then decide how you want to handle the rest of the year
  19. This is the important one, and it will be used in many future court cases when motorists flatten cyclists.
  20. I do nearly all my training and racing with my daughter, on Sunday we did 2.52 at the 94.7 ~ in fact she beat me by 6 seconds. She's 18, I'm 51. We've been riding together for the last three years. If she keeps this up, I'm going to need to find a slower riding partner, or new legs.
  21. Heating and cooling will probably loosen it. The pedal and the crankarm are different metals, so they expand and contract at a different rate when heated and cooled, loosening the grip between them. Put the whole thing in hot water for an hour, then freeze it, then warm it to room temp again. If that doesn't loosen it, take it to an engineering shop
  22. Unfortunately, in cycling this is not true for most people, but obviously there are a few exceptions. Age certainly affects recovery time, so the young guys have a massive training advantage ie. they can train harder and more often than an older person. Unless you are a Mclean or a Beneke, you will feel the effect of age when the young bucks put the hammer down.
  23. I think it depends on your condition before the lay off. I usually ride about 1000km per month, then suffered a serious back injury and was pretty much off the bike for 4 months, and only did about 500k's of very easy riding in the entire 4 month period. After recovery, I built up my training over a 3 month period, and now back to 1000k's per month and racing again. It's different for everybody, and definitely age dependent imo. I'm not a youngster any more, so it will probably be quicker for a young person.
  24. Be that as it may, he still comes across as a Big D ~ that's ****, in case you don't know. I'm a "toppie" too, and I'd like to think that the few extra years we have had has taught us not to make such irresponsible statements.
  25. Dunno about shocking and disgusting, it was a normal video of a traffic accident in which people happened to be killed. The quality wasn't that great, and it certainly wasn't possible to identify those killed.
