  1. Hopefully, I'll let you know. Talked my son into riding with me, 100 miler, and if all goes according to plan, I'll have 2 weeks to build 2 classic bikes. I've got a Guerciotti and a Carrera over there, but I'll need to adapt them. Brake cables have to 'show' and no deep section wheels, but I have most of the stuff there already. Interestingly, they allow compact cranks, so that will make riding a bit easier.
  2. Yeah, agreed, a classic bike ride somewhere in SA would be fantastic. I think that if we can get one of the bigger road races interested, others might become interested too. Once we have enough interest, then maybe we can start our own. The UK one really looks as though it's going to be fun. Lots of pubs on the route and they're brewing a special beer for the 3 day occasion!!
  3. Rode my Daccordi in the Herald tour last weekend! Other than a few creaks, she rode like a dream, unlike me! I made a fundimental mistake. I did'nt change the gearing and with 1135 metres of climbing, I struggled. My highest gearing was 39/25, so it was a matter of: "Old man's legs and young man's gears". But I did enjoy. PS" I've had preliminary discussions with Herald organisers to include a 'classic' section next year. They are very, very keen and I'll explore it with them further at a meeting in August. So get ready to fly to PE for the Herald tour 2015.

YMMV I do have a hansom tandem, a hansom frame and a pettini bicycle. The pettini is in my wooljersey gallery. Gotty Hansen built under the brands Hansom, Zini. These were build as racers, track and tandem, and some definitely custom fit. Gotty Hansen was the president of the SACF - South African Cycling Federation. My LBS has NOS zini frames for approx US$150 Francois du Toit built Lejeune under licence, later building du Toit. Custom fit was available. One regularly see 6/7 speed Lejeunes at the funrides, I have only seen one du toit cycle. I dont think he is building anymore. He is the local pinnarello agent currently Duncan McIntyre, not sure what his own brand was, but he also built under the Pettini brand for Linden Cycles. He used to build in just about anything, but my pettini is a lugged frame Bill Lange built De 'Lange and also under the Macintosh brand for Robbie Mcintosh, (never seen these before) The Bloch family built Sancini, (heard about them, never seen, but I might be able to get hold of a frame from a local guy) The Cohen family built Le Turbo (one regularly sees them in 10/12 speed variants) these are more bottom end. There are also 2 other brands : Alpina and Cosmos, but I dont know who built them. Alpinas are lugged steel, one can see them regularly. I have not seen (or noticed) a cosmos before (I think Peugeot also built locally, not sure. there sure are an awful lot of them around) Moving off-topic now, but adding them for completeness sake for posterity, and also because I am not sure about some of them Not sure if these are on or off-topic/KOF as I have never seen any Gary Koen - Avenue Peter Wheeler - Victoria, Lotus (the lotus frames were carbon fibre, and definitely off-topic) John Freeman - Exocet (the only ones I have seen is aluminium, he could have built in steel as well) These are distinctly not on topic Donald Williamson - Produx (used to be aluminium and now carbon fibre.   11. What's her serial number? Apparently BASSO was one of the few manufacturers where the serial numbers meant anything. Seems the first two denote the date of manufacture. Seems to be correct, at least for the frames I have, they date from mid 80s to mid 90s.
  12. Very nice CAPE, a very nice frame indeed. My opinion would echo those of others, dress her up with 80s Campy, she deserves it and was almost certainly made for it.   14. Do you know when they changed? I bought a Colnago pantographed FSA compact crank set a couple of years ago, but the BB is English and it won't fit any of my current Nagos. Though haven't tried on my Dream, which circa 2002.

  16. For those of you interested in L'Eroica Britannia, I've just seen this on FB. Means anyone can still enter. Hi folks, After a few pre-Christmas technical issues, and despite a few people managing to fight their way through them, we turned off our on-line system in order to fix the bugs. That's now been done and we're delighted to confirm that entries for pre-registrants will open by Friday this week at the latest. All those who successfully pre-registered will receive an email with a PIN code and instructions of how to enter. For everyone else we'll open entries generally on or around Monday 3rd Feb. No emails, no PIN codes; simply a matter of checking www.eroicabritannia.co.uk and hitting the enter now button. We've closed any pre-registrations so general entries will be allocated on a first come first serve basis. We have a camping field which all riders get an FOC pitch in with the entry price.   18. Hi Guys Looking for help. I'm looking for a pair of the old Shimano cleats, the ones used on the last era of strapped pedals. As far as I remeber, they sort of looked like the original Look cleats, but they has a slot at the base, which engaged the back plate of the pedal. Anyone remember these, have a pair I can buy, or borrow. I'm wanting to ride L'Eroica Brittania, and they only allow old school pedals. These old school shimano pedals have quite good support, if you use the cleats that came with them. Anyone help? And, importantly, I can use fairly modern shoes!!! This is the Dura Ace one, which I think is different to the 105 or 6000 one. Not sure.

  22. They are fantastic bikes. I bought one in the states in '88 and brought it home. Rode it for a couple of years, a bit like spaghetti if you pushing hard, but incredibly comfortable. Mine was wine red in colour, beautiful. Wish now that I hadn't sold it. Good luck, wish I had a spare 4.5k, but I don't.

  24. Ah, memories! My Detto shoes, bought about 1988, I think, my first pair of clipless pedal compatible shoes. The Pumas I bought in the States sometime in 1990. And, believe it or not, the tri-suite is from the Durban Iron Man in 1987. Man I was thin, sorry to say that I wouldn't get one leg into the body section now, sigh!
