  1. Along the 7 passes road and above Sedgefield is a town that time forgot called Karatara - it's plain weird, the residents look related and probably are. It's a mixed community and you couldn't say anyone is this or that. Behind it are some majestic mountain trails and beauty but the town doesn't have much to show off. The church got to pose with my bike. I took the shot and hightailed out of there chop chop before the banjo players could kidnap me

Great scenery I'm sure. Quite an interesting history around the town.

When we went through there a few years ago we were shown some special hospitality when we showed interest on one of the families' lavish veggie garden.

  2. Thanks for all the suggestions. I've got a quote for servicing the fork (R950) so will have that done ASAP to prevent damage.

The reason for not just dropping the bike off at a LBS is because I want to know what to expect so that I don't get taken for a ride, and to decide what I want to do first as having everything fixed at once might be too expensive. I do think having the bike serviced by a LBS might sort out a few of the issues already, so I'll start there.

  3. Hi gentlemen,

I've been off the bike for a few years and before that I haven't really done proper maintenance on it. I want to get back in the saddle.

My tech knowledge is zero, so I'm going to mention what I think needs attention and if anyone can give advice please jump right in.

Firstly the back rim seems to be slightly buckled. It's visible when spinning the wheel while the bike is upside down. How would one fix this? See video

Another thing that always bothered me is that I can never seem to get the back wheel fixed straight on. The tyre seems very close to the frame on on the one side and wider away on the other side.

You'll also see in the pics how close the disc is to the frame. When spinning the wheel it looks like it catches a bit of the brake because it stops kinda suddenly.

When spinning the crank backwards it feels a bit stiff. This is even with the chain unhooked. Any reason why that can be?

The shocks seems like it sagged a bit. I'm guessing it needs to be pumped again. And how often does it need to be serviced?

The chain and cassettes seem worn. What is the current SRAM model that replaced the XX, or would make a good replacement for the chain, cassette and chain rings?

The one bottle holder's mountings in the frame are loose. Can these be fitted again?

The tires are also worn so I'm thinking of putting an Ikon in front and an Ardent at the back. Currently its tyres are 2.0 front and 2.2 rear and I as to go thicker but in afraid a thicker tyre won't fit the back because it's so close to the frame. It's currently a really stiff ride so in trying to see what I can do to make it a bit more comfy.

    All advice appreciated.

  4. Gentlemen,

I want to set up irrigation for my raised beds.

I have 4 raised beds with 8 squares in each. I'm thinking of running a thick pipe in the middle of the bed, with 8 drippers going out of it. Something like in the image.

Do you reckon it will be effective? What would I need to build something like this?

  5. I bought quite a few things from Living Seeds:

    Tomatoes

    Watermelon (crimson sweet)

    Spaghetti squash

    Gem squash

    Spanspek

    Chillies

    Swiss chard

    Red Popcorn

I have planted the seeds in a tray the past weekend and need to prepare the beds and containers over the weekend. I bought some wood to make raised beds. Will get my hands dirty over the weekend. I'm new to most of the things mentioned above and very excited to see how it goes.

I've got some Swiss Chard and habanero (sp? ) peppers from last season that's still going strong.

At the start of the winter I also planted the following fruit trees (they're so cheap at the nursery):

    Orange

    Lemon

    Naartjie

    Plum

    Peach

    Nectarine

I guess it's still going to be a few years before they'll bear fruit, although they have made blossoms already. I think they're too small to have fruit this season.

Anyways, it's weird but I find the edible garden idee very excited as I previously hated normal gardening.

  6. Don't know if these were mentioned, but two good streaming options is Stremio (preferred) and Popcorn Time (also okay but sometimes slow depending on the sources). Both rely on torrents. Stremio allows you to add custom plug in for alternative sources. Google it and give it a shot

  7. Hi guys,

    Complete newbie here!

A few months ago I started with a few veggie seedlings just to experiment (and see if I enjoy tending a veggie garden).

I planted peppers, spinach, strawberries and cherry tomato seedlings directly into the ground. This was end November.

We had water restrictions and a very hot & dry summer, so they suffered a bit. Growth was slow and insects or birds terrorized my veggie patch.

Few weeks ago I decided to transplant what was left (only peppers, strawberries & spinach) into pots, which allowed me to move it into a cooler part of the garden during the hot months, and move it to the stoep when the winter freeze comes, and finally to water it better.

I've used potting soil and compost for the pots. Also bought the fish fertilizer which I'll administer about every 6 weeks.

Here is my biggest spinach plant which is still too small to harvest (I guess)

You'll notice the leaves have some damage - I'm not sure if this is caused by bugs or birds?

Also, you'll see some small tomato seedlings coming up on the sides. This was an experiment to see how easy tomato seeds grow from a slice of fresh tomato (very easy!). I'll transplant them when they're bigger.

And here are my peppers, also too small to harvest

    post-26916-0-50270700-1459939761_thumb.jpg

    You'll notice similar leave damage.

The strawberry plants are still alive, although not bearing fruit currently (not in season)

    A few more questions:

What can I do to accelerate growth further? These plants are almost 5 months old already!

Should the peppers, spinach and strawberries be able to survive the winter?

I also want to plant onion and swiss chard seeds. Is this a good time of the year?

    Any advice appreciated as always!
