  1. Lots of little issues still to sort before building it though :- One tubby has a puncture so it's unpick, patch and re-sew RD needs a service (pulley wheels) FD threads a bit damaged so will need to make a plan Need to make sure BB is the correct width Chain has 2 stiff links Need a cassette space thingy that goes on before the cassette of that makes sense. The outers in the bike were for the newer type shifters, these have the sticky out cables to the side. May have to make a 'las' there One bolt of the seatpost is missing ... looks like something specific but we'll see That's all I can think of but will just do bits every day, don't want to rush it [emoji12]
  2. Mmmmm I use an MTB FD with my STI's no problem RD pull ratios between road and mountain are not the same ... You can use a 9sp MTB RD with 9 or 10sp Road STI shifters That's my experience
  3. As Montezuma says rim brakes could be tricky. Me? I'd run 26" wheels with the narrowest MTB tyres I could find if it was just for fun ...
  4. Long story but have had this frame in my bike room for quite some time ... Small for me and planned to build it for my son some time but there was no rush. Was going to collect some nice bits and get it done before 94.7 Yesterday while chatting to him he challenged me to build it with just stuff out of my garage and bike room but NO stripping parts off existing bikes. Will start tomorrow ....
  5. I have a 'monstercross' bike which I use for a combination of road and gravel duty. I have done many, many, many kilometres on it (like thousands). I have the option to run just about any combination of gears on it since my son owns a bike shop. I have tried lots of different options but I have settled on a double (28/42 Rotor Oval) with an 11-32 cassette. Works for me ... When I do get left behind its not the bike but rather my legs that let me down ???? Done a 400k on road Audax as well as the 165k gravel Race To The Sun with it just as reference.
  6. Lost the connection just before halfway but carried on anyway. Thanks guys!
  7. Thanks, probably just along for the ride as part of a longer planned ride ...
  8. Thanks but think I'll just suffer along, was just an interesting observation ... Hopefully just another week!
  9. Thanks guys! Maybe I'm doing something wrong but for the life of me I can't ride at or above my FTP for anything but a few very short bursts ... I notice others seem to easily be able to and keep it up for a while [emoji848]
  10. Those guides under the BB are a pain in the @ss! MTB ones will still drive me to drink ... I've tried using some of that thin plastic 'outer' type stuff on road and MTB but even that only works for a ride or 2 [emoji35] Any kind of 'lube' sprayed there also just seems to attract more crud ...
  11. Demmit even on my 'dumb' trainer I can't keep up [emoji3525] - clearly I'm not clued up on these things!
  12. I've only noticed that little display that shows percentage of FTP ....
  13. Sadly joined late and only for a short time but still hurt and had fun, thanks Clint for taking the time to set it up!
  14. Hopefully someone would take the time to bail me out cause I'm so close!
  15. Skud jou kop bietjie lyk my hy raas ... Nice one!
  16. Meanwhile over here at Casa NSBB things just going along as they usually do no stress .... I also worked from home May 2011 till June 2017 when I retired so it's a well established routine. Having said that it doesn't mean I don't get into trouble every now and then but it's rare and I know how to ride out those occasional storms. I'm firmly in the 'happy wife, happy life' camp!
  17. I'm slowly adopting that strategy even though it's almost counter intuitive to hit a bigger gear when climbing but as you say with a dumb trainer, and rider in this case [emoji6] , it seems the best way to go about it.
  18. Because mine's dumb I can't wait to feel anyway just notice that I come to an almost dead stop even though I'm pedaling like a hamster on his wheel .... Slowly getting used to it. Tomorrow I might just take on one of those CTCT routes [emoji41]
  19. Sadly nor am I mate! I'm still struggling with the fact that on my dumb trainer when the route goes up, in the same gear and cadence my speed drops ... It's a mental thing to up the 'effort' quickly, clearly it's correct but the brain struggles to compute!
