  1. career aspirations, eh? That ones got a ticket to nowhere. fast.
  2. Unfortunate, but true. Another tip that the "rest of them" need to be aware of: Wear a helmet! Sick and tired of seeing Joe Public riding around, without a care in the world, without a lid on and going STRAIGHT thru the lights as if we were living in, I dunno, Post-apocalyptic RSA where there are NO PPL AROUND!
  3. heh... UFO indeed. Those valve-lights kinda remind me of those spoke sliders that used to shoot to the outside of the rim when you rode, then slide back when you slowed down... The memories! Blue BMX, not a care in the world.
  4. Cateye 7LED read light, plus those little toggey ones to fit on your pack... Revelation 3 up front At least, that's what I want...
  5. One little thing I'd like to share is this... If you ride early morning / dusk / night-time, instead of just a super-bright bar light, get yourself a small led to fit onto your helmet. They cost just R80 or so and weigh next to nothing, but because it'll be bobbing around (due to your head moving whilst you ride) it'll be noticed alot more by the motorists than just a stationary light...
  6. Viva! Viva! Lovely letter... I like the one about the ant & the grasshopper as well. Very George Orwell-ish
  7. no sympathy... yet. If it gets out that the guy was in the right, was easily visible and didn't flip the guy off for just looking at him funny, he'll get it.
  8. i was just about to post something else - maybe I was misunderstanding my misunderstanding you had of my post... Wait... way too much thought for this early. And it be true what you say. And then they get knocked over, and the whole thing starts again... You have access to any sticky mines up there? cptmayhem2009-02-19 03:05:09
  9. Hey Samma, I think you misunderstood me somewhat... I was referring to all the idjits who are giving us a bad name, ie: red-light jumpers, non lid / light wearers etc etc, and taking them to task when they do something stupid like that... Myself, I like to think i am a good rider (not the fittest by a long way though) and regularly thank motorists for just waiting to pass me, and always stop at red lights. I can't think of one time when I've flipped the bird in the past 3 years (used to commute in London - it was rife over there) And to answer your q, (even though it was rhetorical) : We're all @ssholes (been tarred with 1 mthafckn HUGE brush) And until ALL of us ride & drive in a courteous, responsible way, there always will be @ssholes out there that give both fraternaties a bad name. To quote you, we have to start with our own house. I started doing that on Monday morning, and had to stop my 2 training partners from going thru red signals & stop streets just this morning. After all, it is about education. And a change of attitude... To put another side on it though - I was waiting at a red light on Waal st this morning, around 7am, when a ped just says to me "Ry over the lights, man! There's no cars coming"
  10. Hey Skye, unfortunately those guys will never change - until one of them does get killed, on or off the bike, then they get even more angry... Only thing to do is adjust our own riding, and when we're ON our bikes, if we see anyone, to confront them. Maybe we do that on our rides Saturday mornings?
  11. How much for the cateye? no such thing as too expensive if it can save your life. Not that much more though...
  12. nope... sorry! Was also referred to as a pedestrian being knocked over. Will probably have more news pretty soon, from someone who has access to that grapevine...
  13. OH YES!!! That feeling you get on the ST when you're afraid you're going too fast for the corner, or are going to hit that huge friggin root in the middle of the ST and come pip = and then you make it stick and carry on off the drop-off and it's the biggest one you've done yet... pure exhilaration!
  14. I like the idea of the black armbands - if enough people subscribe to it, and the word is put out there... think of the TV coverage, and the guys being interviewed on Supersport, followed by the (probably small - but anyway) article in the paper the next day... Unfortunately, though, you're always going to have idjits on the road. Cyclist or non-cyclist. Saw 4 seperate ppl disobeying the rules this afternoon on my 50km circuit between Wynberg & Fish Hoek... Jumping stop-streets & red lights without a care in the world. Not to mention the lack of helmets on a further 5! The APATHY!
  15. Well, he either doped or didn't dope. Personally, I like to think he didn't dope and it was purely the anger that fuelled him to 7 tour victories. That and the tremendous support he got from his underlings during the tours. We have no proof that he doped, and as such cannot lay blame at his feet purely because he's beaten all those who have doped. It's like saying Ali put cement in his gloves because he beat Foreman, and that Rossie put 30 kilo lead weights into his competitors' bikes frames the year he went to Yamaha... Can't we just accept that he's won it fair and square, on pure and simple talent and just simple dedication? And if he wins it this year? What then? Oh - let me guess - he's running on Ethanol.
  16. the insurance thing shouldn't be a problem unless you're a "professional" cyclist who does races all the time, or an elite cyclist. Even then, cycling is hardly a "dangerous pursuit"... all the "at own risk" thing is, is absolving the Cycle Tour Trust and the Chappies maintenance team from any liability should you come a-croppa due to a rather large, un-social carbon-based shpongle falling on top of you. Standard insurance will cover, and in the case of non-recreational cyclists, will cover as long as you've notified said life office (insurer) that you're a professional cyclist, taking part in x amount of races per year. Even then, there shouldn't be an exclusion. Add to that that the indemnity will be pretty much the same as the ones Motorsport SA make all spectators at rallies and hillclimbs sign - just so that you can't sue THEM for negligence... Hope this little rant clears things up...
  17. RIP Craig - truly a horrible thing to have happen to you on what you think to be a normal night. Something has to be done... the rumble strips work, and are a great deterrent from drifting to the yellow line... Not nice. At all.
  18. so who had the cassette? They did. And they kept it for you, I imagine? Like you asked them to? And you asked for a discount? Cheeky b&&ger. Go back to your house, and live your life in the bubble, while flaming shops that don't give a discount in these times of drastically reduced sales, less disposable income and economic strife. I pity da fool.
  19. tell us when, and we'll be there...
  20. Sanka, you dead man? Just wear green socks, and claim you're a Jamaican soccer supporter. Either that, or say your hero is Jens Voigt. And put on a German accent.
  21. Many happy returns posman... I'll have a beer for you 26 yrs and counting...
  22. on the road though 0 i think that's the point he's trying to make...
