  3. Firstly... you won't get lapped !!! The tech. sections at Phambili are not as clean as Thaba, but Thaba tough, sharp short climbs, predictable decends where you can roll over, but nothing too difficult to walk!!!! The other option is to do the 20km fun ride. The terrain is hilly ( can't help that ) but the trail is clean and non technical. Jeep track and single track..
  4. So, what was the outcome???? will we see you on the 3rd?

  11. Yes it does help... just a point...away from bikes, look at cars, we all "like" a specific car, whether we can afford it or not, but when the time comes when we CAN afford it we buy what WE LIKE.... go with your gut feeling, try and ride each of the models you are interested in and not just a ride around the shop, try and demo them over a short course and then make a call. Bikes are expensive as we don't look at buying every year.... so satisfy your OWN needs. All the best...... and Cannondale still rule.
  12. So much has been said about the difficulty of the Thaba Trail so we have listened and marked a 10km ride that is NOT difficult. If you follow the white stones with the yellow dot you are sure to enjoy jeep track and single track that won't raise your fears.. This is also the route we will use for the upcoming "fun ride" on the 13th May and then on June 3rd for the beginner and intermediate events at the "Thaba Toughee". New are the two winding down hills incorporated in the JoJo valley. These are both still "work in progress" because we intend berming the bends for an exilirating decent in both instances.. just be aware of the game as they frequent this area in groups!! We are busy with a trail that will be suitable for beginners and famalies and children, with distance options to suit riders desires and fitness levels. We are going to regrade the entire park based on the IMBA system, but please be patiant we are working flat out, we are only a small team. "ILLY" coffee available at the Thaba Kiosk on Saturday and Sunday mornings, where you can sit in the sun and boast about your improved MTB skills. The Two Trees Bakery offers riders and family a great meal after your ride. They have swings and adventure obstacles for the children to have fun on.

    Thaba Toughee

Sure it will be a hard ride, but not the West side of the park. This is a toughee but why have a challange if it isn't worth the test. come on... you'll enjoy it.

    Thaba Toughee

THABA TRAILS on13 May is a date to remember. we will host the "Olympic Footwear Fun Ride" which will be the "curtain raiser" for the Thaba Toughee. Exact same trails and format.... but low key..purely a fun ride meaning we will NOT be doing the 20km Technical trail. SO.. the events will be as follows, Kiddies u8, u10 and u12. Non Technical 10km for beginners and the 20km non technical for the NOT SO FIT.
  15. Hey Friend, I did the brakes, shifters and front der. The wheels are a bit heavy and I know I can find lighter but for now I find nothing wrong with them. My tyres are heay and I know this ( Conti Mountain King work best for me). I left the cassette as there is nothing wrong with the set. CRANKS.... I was a bit fussy and got the Cannondale set. Toxic.... fortunately I am the LBS.

    Thaba Toughee

When: 3rd June 2012 Where: Thaba Trails, 101 Klipriver Drive, Mulbarton, Johannesburg. What: The toughest 20km XCO in Gauteng. Hard but not dangerous. What else: On the day we will have U8,10 and 12 Fun Ride. A 10km Fun ride for beginners ( we have found some non-technical parts) a 20km fun ride for the NOT SO FIT and not so technical. The Thaba Toughee is over some exciting single track and promises to be a race to remember. Achievers belt buckle to the first 50 finishers ONLY. More info. call Wendell 0829000749.
  17. Hi Toxic, I am riding a Scalpel 2 and since getting it have not touched my 26" People said that the 29ers are not suitable to XCO... come ride my trails ( sorry you can't) with my scalpel and see the way it handles. I did do some upgrades and now it is full XTR but worth the little extra..... Cannondales RULE.
  18. Sad But true.... thought this only happens in Johannesburg. One person on this forum wrote that " even if we pay it is still a privilage" land owners also want to be proud of their investment and when superb trails are built on their land it makes them want to help where they can... but if there is NO INCOME due to trespassers then there is no option but to look at closing the facility down. Volunteers... well these are only words, no one ever turns up to actually assist, but the right thing to do is pay volunteers with free access.... just my 5c.
  19. I'm NOT aiming at my foot so I hope I miss it.....What is the porpouse of Cross-country ? I am asking this because I don't understand the sudden emphasis on " rock gardens". What is the test.... if the bike can handle the obstacle???? that is the manufacturers job and expense when the bike fails to do the job.....if the cyclist can handle the obstacle????? well, many can and many cant, so I would suggest that if these tests were on the trail... full body armour should be COMPULSORY.... not because I am a nerd or a sissy or over 60.... but because it can end tragically sooner than later. Recently heard at a " Provincial XCO" that the course was too hard... how? "too many steep climbs", well that is different, "too much turning, tchnical and not smooth enough".... is this a road ride or mountain biking? Marathons are aimed at the " not so technical" riders...ridden mainly on jeep track, sand roads and the too few single tracks made by animals/ humans. It starts at a point and you get to see the riders at the finish 1,2, or three hours later. In my humble opinion.. cross country is about bike handling skills at speed. The ups and downs make for the tests of strength... the turns make for bike handling skills... not about trying to see how many end up at the medics... at this XCO we treated 2 people for respiratory complaint and 1 for scratches and 1 for a thorn.... not bad for a course that is " Too difficult".....there were quiet a few mature mountain bikers there and they unanimously said " we need more of these trails" . I hope I havn't shot myself in the foot. Just my 5c.
  20. Great, looking forward to seeing you. Have an extra super Argus
  21. Hello everyone, we are doing the full 30km trail at 7am on Saturday the 10th. This is deffinately not for beginners as we have the 14km yellow trail for them. We will ride as a group and not as a race, so come enjoy the ride. A nice cup of Illy Coffee will be available after the ride. Thaba Trails, 101 Klipriver drive, Mulbarton.
  22. Hi Natural Defender, nothing in Durbanville could inspire me, this is a piece of land that is natural and not man made and has been under construction since June last year. Come ride it, you MAY like it
  23. Especially HUBWORLD !!!! The aim of cross country I belieVe is speed, skill and not an attempt at testing the strength of bikes...at Mankele last year a particular brand had so many waranty claims for frames it is scary... Come ride the trail prepaired for the XCO on the 4th March...4,5km and deffinately not like Fountains even though I rate fountains as an extremely interesting trail..for me the tes is if you havn't had a drink because you are riding as fast as possible...rock gardens....don't see the point if you have God's natural beauty to work with...just mu humble opinion..
  24. Sorry..very sorry that this is so late, but the work on the trails take up most of my day....we are doing laps on the Cross Country trails from 7am till 12noon tomorrow at Thaba trails. 101 Klipriver Drive, Mulbarton. You can't miss our new sign at the entrance in and around the Southern Brick yard...
